Title: Kurosawa
Post by: Warcat on August 12, 2013, 05:48:36 am
I thought Rashoman was neat movie, really cool theme. Haven't seen Seven Samurai yet. What do others think of Kurosawa.

Good stuff. There's only a handful of samurai flicks of his, I'd suggest watching em all. Might as well go in order too.

Yojimbo is my favorite. I found the Hidden Fortress pretty amusing too.

Great movies, great director.
It's so much different than what you find in western film, for me, its completely refreshing and enjoyable.
Yojimbo and 7 samurai are both great films... I loved "Sanjuro" also.

You might also like Takashi Miike's "Hara Kiri: Death of a samurai"
It got mixed reviews from critics, but It's definitely among my all time favorite samurai films.

I never got how he took like 300 rounds from a Gatling gun and lived.

Akira Kurosawa was a badass. Most of his movies have been remade with different titles from different cultures... For example Yojimo and A Fistful of Dollars a film Clint Eastwood starred in, Seven Samurai attributed to the Magnificent Seven and several others. His capabilities as a director has lasted as an envy to this day.

The dude is a flawless film maker who nailed pretty much everything he did.

I've seen every film he's made and if I can make a recommendation it's that you should watch every film he made.

It will be worth your time and effort.

I follow auteur theory and tend to watch everything someone makes if that someone has some skill, it tends to work out. With Kurosawa it works 100%.

A film that you must see of his that hasn't been mentioned is RAN. It's amazing.

My top picks (not necessarily his best films, just stuff that slapped me in the third eye.) oh and it's in no particular order.

Dreams
Red Beard
The Bad Sleep Well
Ikiru
The Idiot
Stray Dog
I live in fear
The lower depths

Like I said everything he did is gold.

Some other Japanese directors to watch.

Takeshi Kitano

Yasujiro Ozu

Yoji Yamada

Kon Ichikawa

Yojiro Takita (When the last sword is drawn)

Takashi Miike

Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Hiroshi Inagaki (Samurai Series)

This is one of my favourite samurai films, it's fantastic. It's also new, relatively. Many of Japan's modern samurai films are really pretty bad.

Had BBC America on the other day, and as they often do, they were playing Star Trek: Next Generation. Just so happened this particular episode was clearly influenced by Rashoman. I know many famous directors have also credited Kurosawa for influencing them. Definitely will watch some more.
