Title: Help with anime
Post by: Necrorave on August 07, 2013, 05:26:50 pm
I am what you call a "Converted" person.  I used to hate anime because of the stereotypes.  Although, I have given some a chance and thoroughly enjoyed them.  The only problem is, now what?

So far I have watched:

Samurai Champloo
Naruto (Ugh)
Death Note
Soul Eater
Spirited Away
Some other movies I will not try to remember.

Currently watching:

Black Butler (Not racist)
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebopzoopdoopaloop

---------------------------------------------------------------

The ones in bold I liked ALOT.  I was wondering if any of you fellow nerds know any anime that would be similar or I would enjoy based on my bold ones.

I know it is not a large list, but a vagina in my life inspired me to give anime a shot and now I am interested in watching more.

If you are going to suggest anything, please try to avoid "Stereotypical" anime.  Although, if you know a good one that has the Stereotypes in them then just explain why I should watch it.

Thanks

EDIT: I would also like to avoid "Mech Suit" Animes if I can.  Unless they are really worth watching through the Cheesiness.

Btw "Spirited Away" is an absolute masterpiece. I still watch whole thing over and over again occasionally.

Hmm, seems interesting.  Will look into it.  Thank you.

By the way, Spirited Away was the very first thing of Anime I watched (Excluding pokemon or YuGiOh)
Great introduction to anime if you ask me.

True. Anything by Miyazaki will be a good warmup. Talking about Miyazaki, also go for:

Howl's Moving Castle
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347149/

For some epically gothic stuff, also try:

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216651/?ref_=sr_2

When it comes to series, there is of course:

One Piece (this one is directly the ultimate source for the series)
http://www1.watchop.com/

I'll try to keep you up to date with anything else I might remember.

I've watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was OK. I get the impression theres loads of trashy Anime so I haven't really watched much else except for Akira the movie and Ghost in the Shell.

Never seen Samurai Champloo, but if you liked Death Note, you may like...

Darker Than Black, Tokko, Elfen Lied, Ghost Hunt, Kurozuka, Deadman Wonderland, Ergo Proxy, Ghost Hound, Night Head Genesis... Maybe try Blade of the Immortal, Sword of the Stranger, Togainu No Chi...

Personal favourites...

Cybercity Oedo 808, Doomed Megalopolis, Wicked City, Devilman, Amon, Genocyber, Magistrate of Darkness: Judge...

Others worth checking out...

Ninja Scroll, Battle Angel, Jin Roh, Paprika, Strait Jacket, Berserk, 3x3 Eyes, AD Police Files, Angel Cop, Apocalypse Zero, Bubblegum Crisis, Guyver, Twilight of the Dark Master, Vampire Hunder D, Vampire Princess Miyu, Violence Jack, Urotsukidoji, Demon City Shinjuku, Parasite Dolls...

Loads more that I could recommend, but they're ones I haven't seen in a while, and my memory is a little blurry... :P

You are missing out.  A great little series.  All of the characters are amazing in it.

It has a "Hip hop" thing going on which can be awkward at times, but you get used to it and see that it fits well later on.

All around great anime.

Kinda picky when it comes to anime, love my older anime for one, and I love pretty much anything with gore and demons...

How are you watching your anime anyway? In English, or Japanese? Japanese with English subtitles is your best bet, I'm sure most anime fans would agree with me... :P

Don't watch dubbed, that's all I ask for :)

Mushishi, NHK Ni Youkoso and Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood are my sort of my favorite favorites, should have a look at them.

In all honesty, you are going to hate me.  I watch the dubbed versions.  I just find them easier to relate to the characters.  I know dubs usually are not done well or have awkward moments, but without the English language I don't relate very well to the characters.

I'd also like to mention that Samurai Champloo is fairly old.  (For me; Like 2005ish)

Old for me would be early 90's, late 80's, it's when I first started watching anime... :)

The thing that you'll realize, after watching anime for some time. The Japanese voice the characters with passion, and the emotion is there. Americans, well, they dub it as if it's just some cartoon, and they lose the original feeling along the way. Earlier anime was dubbed quite well actually, but even those are better in Japanese. Either way, as long as you're enjoying it, that's all that matters... :P

I started watching Sword Art Online dubbed.

I like it so far and did notice that the original is done MUCH better in the sense of voice acting.  Although, like I said.  It is a matter of relating to the characters for me.

Also, subtitles direct my eyes away from the art itself.  For a very "Smooth" anime art style it can be distracting.

You want help with anime but you watch dubbed? I'm afraid you're beyond help, friend.

Fucking hell, watching dubbed anime makes me feel like the protagonist in A Clockwork Orange when they fix his eyelids into perpetual upsprungedness while blasting him with drugs that make you fucking hate whatever's in front of you.

Seriously, if you watch dubbed anime there's something wrong with you.

Anyway, some suggestions (and for god's sake and all that is holy, fucking watch them with original audio):

Texhnolyze - Dystopian future where everything's gone to shit, featuring cool stuff like artificial limbs (in the series, this technology is called "texhnolyzing"). Main character is a pit fighter in a gladirorial like setting, where he starts his ascension from bottom of society, struggling with his ever growing apathy of human life and stuff that makes you feel really shitty. Watch if you like feeling shitty.

Afro Samurai and Afro Samurai Resurrection - In this instance I'm actually cool with the dubbed version, since Samuel L. Jackson stars in it. Reminiscent of Samurai Champloo with its hip-hop style, but way grittier with ultraviolent gore, superhuman beatings and fucking glorious fucked-up'edness in general. Very casual like with 5 episodes per series.

Well, you already watched Ghost in the Shell, very nice series, my all time favourite.

Eureka Seven - Kinda cheesy, protagonist is a bundle of sticks, but if you like mechas and surfing, and generally awesome animations, this is for you.

Code Geass - Decent anine, very ominous plot and dark enough for my personal taste. Watch if you like mechas (I'm a bit of a mecha fan, yes...), plot twists in every corner and fresh and original concept.

CLANNAD - You'd probably judge me for watching this, but I like dramas and this one will probably make you shed a few tears. Not an amazing anime, but it leaves you with a lasting impression (mainly because I cried like a little girl almost ).

FMA: Brotherhood - One of the few good animes out there, highly recommend.

Anything Miyazaki is always brilliant.

And if you want something completely different; Lucky Star - Just wach it, you either hate it or love it.

I watched Naruto a long time ago. It was a good show but I feel like it was pointed in the direction of a younger audience. Still has it's good moments though, good story, and well developed characters. I have never seen the newer narutos though like naruto shipuden or whatever they have out, just Naruto. Oh yeah and watch the English dub.

The things I've always hated about anime is that they always drag out scenes for sooo long. Honsetly the only anime series I've watched for more than a few episodes was Naruto.

I know Naruto can be offputting at times Jarold but just don't give up. From time to time it looks childish, sometimes it gets monotonous, fillers are boring, the almost gay Sasuke-Naruto relation might be sickening... But please go on. Naruto isn't actually as lame as its shell makes it appear.

Code geass, Berserk (berserk is probably the only anime i could watch dubbed, i dunno maybe its the style and setting which makes it feel sort of ok), anything made by Studio ghibli is worth watching.

Naruto is pretty good before shippuuden, maybe its my nostalgia talking, but i stopped watching shippuuden because it just felt so childfriendly, while in the early naruto episodes there is blood etc.

Another GREAT anime is Hajime no Ippo, which ive seen multiple times, its a pretty long one aswell with around 100 episodes iirc. Also continues in the manga which is one of the longest running mangas with around 1000 chapters i believe.

Hello, I'm NA's best weaboo as decided by Daruvian so my words hold meaning here.

Only two animes are allowed to be watched dubbed; Princess Mononoke and Cowboy Bebop!

After that you want subbed for the rest. Here is a list of random animes that you may like that are varied with respective genres.

Safe Recommendations for TV series:

I have to second the recommendation for Mushishi. It's a pretty special thing, though, because it's about a spirit healer, and there is not much action in it, but the art is great and I also like the eerie atmosphere.

I must admit, Berserk is a great anime, it's also one of the worst dubbed anime's I've ever had the chance of hearing...

Watch an episode of Berserk in Japanese, then watch it in English, it's actually quite sickening...

+1 to the Porco Rosso suggestion, one of my favorite studio Ghibli/Miyazaki films!

Another decent anime an old housemate got me into is "Evangelion".
It's one diminishing trait, for me, is that the main characters are all children, and the voice actors they get for children are high pitched whiney voices... I watched it in japanese w/ subtitles, and after listening to parts in the english dubbed version, it actually doesn't sound too bad in english. If you can get past the voice overs, the series is quite good.
The art/animation is superb and the storyline, although slow moving at times, is unrivaled. It's probably my favorite storyline of any anime series I've seen. It has a very dark futuristic backdrop complete with mysticism, Armageddon, secret government societies and attacking "angels" (which are more like demons who come to destroy the world.).

Now I might as well tell you about "Preacher" the graphic novel series also...
While not an anime, or animation. This graphic novel is top of the line, and the best story I've ever read in my entire life. I can't think of anything I like more.
I don't spend money on graphic novels, manga's or comics... but after borrowing book 1 and reading it, I went out and bought the entire 9 book series for something like 90$ after tax, new. (It's all full color, which drives up the price a bit. But you can pick up the books much cheaper on ebay, used around 40-50$ for the complete set.)

The storyline involves the offspring of a demon and an angel, which once born causes God to disappear from heaven. The new entity dubbed "genesis" possesses a burnt out preacher by the name of Jesse Custer who subsequently decides to track down God and make him answer for all the evil in the world. the genesis entity is kind of benign (doesn't control jesse custer) but imbues him with "the word of God"... He can basically command people to do things with his voice, and they have no option but to do it. He's flanked by his two friends, one an ex-gf turned hitman (hitwoman?), the other is a 200+ year old Irish alcoholic/druggie vampire (the coolest, no frills vampire ever imagined.).
The series dabbles in Religion, Occult, Secret Societies, Black magick, and more... There are vampires, angels, demons, secret agents and more. It is extremely gory at times and at others just flat out raunchy and the art is just top notch. One of the books delves into the history of "The Saint of Killers" who replaces the angel of death, and is a complete western, with a different artist than the rest of the books and is an epic tale in an of itself. It's kind of hard to explain it all because it jumps around on so many topics and locals, but know this. It is the best of the best. Any comic/graphic novel store you go to will carry Preacher, and I doubt you can find anyone who has read it and doesn't highly recommend it to others. This isn't a book to show the kids, it is very dark and gritty.
Homer's Odyssey has nothing on the epic that is PREACHER.

I've watched the first two Berserk: Golden Age, movies and they seem to be completely different than these episodes!
Does anyone know if the full length movies are set before or after these Berserk episodes?

There is a decent anime section on pornhub. I am visiting it from time to time, when i am in need for something that would otherwise be impossible to see. Like a giant ork having an intercourse with an elf and such. There was that memorable video, where a girl is being gang-banged by 3 centaurs. Animation was not perfect, but damn, it's 3 centaurs, right?! I wholeheartedly recommend this one.

the movies go into more detail on the scenes that occur then the tv series does, as the tv series progressed the story line very quickly leaving out alot of the details.  Also the tv series starts and ends very quickly and leaves out a lot of the detail that the Manga would have in it.

And after watching Berserk, english dubbed, the voice actors were all great, they sounded nothing like the shitty black guy posted above.(that was terrible btw, atrocious voice acting)  And it really is hard to watch the anime when you have to constantly stare at the bottom of the screen.  If the acting is well done, then i dont see why you wouldnt watch the english version, unless you're some sort of hardcore weeaboo lover.
Title: Re: Help with anime
Post by: Necrorave on August 08, 2013, 06:10:42 pm
For me at least it's more about hearing the characters voice-acted as the creators/writers intended, the quality of voice acting is consistently good in Japanese (and if it wasn't we wouldnt be able to tell lol). Also i've heard some truly shit English dubs lol that largely put me off the idea of dubs, and some dubs are hugely censored for violence and content because Western dubs are often for showing in America, and of course since it's animated it's nearly always aimed at young children. There are good dubs out there though, and usually you end up being loyal to whichever you hear first for an anime, cos that's how you expect the characters to sound from then on.

Reading subtitles as you watch is just something you get used to, i'd already seen a ton of Kung Fu films with subtitles so i was used to it when i discovered anime for the first time. Proper Kung Fu films with Western voices can be more distracting than having to read lol, like in the film 'Hero' where the mighty Emperor of China in the English dub is voiced by that duck who sells noodles in Kung-Fu Panda xD now that kinda made the whole film hilarious and it wasn't a comedy.

I usually avoid "Censored" dubs.  They also bother me, which would be the only reason I would watch the original.  Although, if the dub is done well and uncensored then I have no reason to watch the original.

Those elitists who watch the original for the sake of watching it can kiss my unimpressive ass.

Subtitles just bother me, as Antiblitz said.  It takes your eyes away from the animation itself.

Just stick to japanese. After a while you kinda begin to understand what they are talking about without looking at subs.

Yeah imo 1% of anime is very good but rest is absolute trash. I've kind of given up trying to sort through it myself but these are what I can remember....

Claymore is good, berserk is way overated.

ghost in the shell film was amazing and quite intellectual. akira was unwatchably stupid and boring.

elfen lied is ok. Hellsing is ok.

shigirui is insanely fucked up and insanely good.

princess monoke is good. moribito film was pretty good.

DO NOT EVEN TOUCH BLEACH/NARUTO/NINJA SCROLL/DRAGONBALLZ/etc.

Or maybe you just have bad taste, because I think Claymore was good and Elfen Lied was decent.

Berserk isn't overrated, it's a fucking classic, of course it gets a lot of praise. Overrated would be if it came out this year and everyone went crazy about it. People are just nostalgic about it, there's nothing to "overrate".

you should open your eyes up to more intelligent anime, there's a lot better animes than claymore or the likes of it

Now that's some pretentious and arrogant bullshit if I ever saw some. Just because you're only able to enjoy niched anime that caters to your self-deluded "intellect" doesn't mean others aren't able to watch a broader spectrum of anime.

And if you're gonna be pretentious and arrogant, at least back your posts up with some substance because nobody will take you seriously.

The main reason I didn't like berserk and why I wouldn't recommend it (don't get why people do) is because it is completely unfinished, anime abruptly ends. not worth the investment unless maybe you want to go on to read the rest.

it did come out in the 80s so I can forgive it some of the extreme tackiness. plus I still listen to this song

PS: elfen lied is for horny adolescents its hardly intelligent.

PS: elfen lied is for horny adolescents its hardly intelligent.

Not everything has to be "intelligent". For me, art, books, anything creative has a message. Whether that message is a feeling, a question to be thought over, a societal issue to be debated or a technically masterful work, it's all up to how the person conveys the message.

If you look at things from this perspective, I think you will be more forgiving when considering what anime's are "low-brow" or "unintelligent".

At least that's how I view things.

Started watching Darker Than Black.

So far I am liking it.  Thanks for the other recommendations though, will eventually get to them.

I thought Darker than Black was pretty good but there was something lacking that made it great you know, the same thing with Ghost in the shell in my opinion.

back your posts up with some substance

I enjoyed Psycho-Pass, Ookami to Koushinryou, Code Geass was good but it felt really predictable imo, Fate/Zero was pretty good as well. Steins;gate was great.

Oops, just realized I did a double post...

Darker than Black is a great anime...

mm but i felt that the second season wasn't really cohesive with the first, maybe that's just me. I really enjoyed the first season though.

That's something I can agree with, in fact, I only watched the second season through once, it was a disappointment...

I'll admit I was looking forward a lot to Sword art but personally for me it ended when it went to the next non-sword art online arc.

Just a fan trailer, but this a great series, definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it...
