Title: Character names
Post by: Wrenaq_Lars on May 09, 2011, 01:52:36 pm
I once wrote a post saying that I thought some of the names people were using were a bit out of order ie:cptcumface, rapetrain etc and I got shot down by many people saying that they didnt care because swearing is part of the language.
I do agree swearing is part of the language and we all swear from time to time but I still think to use such words in someones name is just childish.
Also I read the EU server rules and found this.

Behavior rules
No offensive character names. If in doubt about a name, pick another one.

So will someone please do something about the people with offensive names.
I for one dont want to see some childish name splashed across my screen every kill they make and it comments on some of the people who play the game and also the admins who do not follow the rules.
Right go on flame away I just have a little decorum (this means, dignified propriety of behavior, speech, dress, etc.)
Farewell Wrenaq.

It's always good to have a bit of decorum, you personally. You can't force others to be though. I'm not a vulgar person, but I actually find some of these names amusing. Your post is utterly pointless, the only thing that you will get is grief.

Its in the rules, that should be it.
I have never played any online game where it is allowed.
Read the rules and it states no offensive character names and it is not being enforced.

You are correct in what you are saying, if it is in the rules then it should be enforced. But what needs to be sorted out is what is offensive. For instance I don't find those example names  offensive at all, but then if somebody had a name walesisshit then I would be offended. Do we limit it to racism, slander or swearing? What is truly offensive about a swear word, how does it affect you?

Like it says in the rules...No offensive character names. If in doubt about a name, pick another one.
If in doubt pick another one.
Iam not trying to be an old fuddy duddy I just cant see the point of using swear words in names, Yes use them in context of your ingame typing but not in a name where it has meaning at all.
If it was up to me all names should be in context of the game. (chadz did think about this).

I asked what it is you find offensive and why you find them offensive?  If you see swearing everywhere, in context;why would you find it offensive out of context? The mind boggles.

He is very cute yes. I want one.

I don't like them as well. If they are offensive like medieval offensive, ok, but they are usually names just for lolz and childish.

Yes but are you truly offended by the use of these names? Don't take me wrong here, just playing devils advocate, I find the topic interesting.
Title: Re: Character names

When I swear I mean it, I dont swear in game but I understand some people will to describe what is happing to them as in life, but to use a swear word for the sake of using a swear word is just stupid to me and at the end of the day its in the rules.
Swear words are great if used at the right time for the right situation, I have only ever used the C word once in my life and the dude who I aimed it at deserved it. People who use it left right and center lose the effect the word has as a derogatory remark.

Yes swear words have lost their impact through out the years. Bad parenting and television. We'll have to invent a new set of words.

I'll have to admit I've lost count the amount of times I've used the C word. Shame on me. Probably why I don't find these names offensive. I do get what you are saying though. As of limiting names to the context of the game, I think that would be unwise. It would remove Character from some of the awesome names, like mine for example.

I'm offended by CptCumFace's name because my Grandfather who fought in WW2 was a Captain and he's face was made out of Cum.

Ahhhh i thought you meant names like. "Thom the Archer Snuffer" or something like that.

Korgoth nice to add a bit of humour into this thread. Nice one, made me laugh.

Do vulgar names really bother people that much? seems kind of petty tbh, anyone 16 or over ( the age rating of the game ) should be able to see a name they don't like and forget about it. I'd understand if someones name was a personal attack on you, but I really don't see how these names can bother you so much. To be offended by Cpt Cum Face is hilarious.

Glad you find it funny, but once again I say its the rules.....
I know a girl (my wife) who played this game for a couple of days and saw a certain name with the word rape in it, she found that offensive and said something and got flamed so she will not play anymore stating the games full of teenage morons. I urged her to complain but she didnt know the screenshot button.
Yes I do find certain names offensive thats why I made this post.
Just because you dont find them offensive doesnt mean they are not.
For the last time....its the rules and people should know better when naming the character.

That is what I was trying to say, I would only get offended if it was an attack. But we have to realise some people have different backgrounds.

When these "younger" people create these names what  is going  through their minds when choosing? I bet it's either to offend the sensitive individuals or to create laughs from the more accepting crowd.

Didn't think of that when you first mentioned rape in a name. That would certainly be offensive to some women, that definitely shouldn't be allowed.

So please if any admins are reading do something about it.

I enjoy the inapropriate names. The first time I saw ROHYPNOL and RUFFIES galloping about naked on their brave steeds, I couldn't help but laugh.

I do recal seeing somebody with rape in their name. I can't remember the exact name though, and it bugs me. Anyway, that also made me laugh.

I'm not going to try to rationalize away the inapropriatness of using names that include words such as rape, cum, fuck, shit, piss and/or date-rape drugs. They are being used for humorous, immature purposes, and I like it, being a humorous and immature person. I agree with OP, however, that if it specifically says not to use inapropriate names in the rules, then those rules should be followed and enforced. I do not propose that people be summarily (probably used that word wrong) banned/kicked for it, but warnings should be issued and magenta text displayed without remorse.

It should be up to individual server owners. I need to poop.

Iam not saying ban them just make them change their names.

Hi
I do agree with you that nicks like "rapetrain" should not be allowed. Ive spoken with the other admins, and they dont agree with me, so rapetrain will not be forced to change his nick. Same with cptcumface. Tho, you wont see cptcumface around for a while, hes banned for other reasons atm.

I think i've had a big turn around in my opinion on this matter. The word Rape in the context of this game means Pwned, i get that, I've even said it quite often in TeamSpeak. But then I'm with like minded individuals who I know would not be offended. As Lars has said his wife was offended by the RapeTrain name, which is quite natural. The other admins show a great insensitivity to this matter, which is shameful.
Title: Re: Character names
Post by: Wrenaq_Lars on May 09, 2011, 05:06:41 pm
why put it in the rules then?
So admins pick and choose which rules to follow eh?
Title: Re: Character names

We are _very_ careful about enforcing that rule, and I think only obvious racism, personal attacks (like Wrenaq_sucks_Lars) and stuff like that are reacted against. I think we could be more strict, also we should include sexism, but as it is now, it wont.

Idk why people think they are funny when they put sexist stuff in their names.

Unoriginal and stupid.

Title: Re: Character names
Post by: nuffen on May 09, 2011, 05:30:00 pm
It was not ment as a personal attack, but as an example of a personal attack that would have been forced to rename.

Yes but are you truly offended by the use of these names? Don't take me wrong here, just playing devils advocate, I find the topic interesting.

Well, not really. They just feel out of context. But that goes also for names like Jetpack, LooneyTunes, OmegaPwndz, etc...

But I understand what the OP means now. If racist is not tolerated, extreme sexism should not be tolerated as well. There are people very sensitive to this kind of thing, and you can't really avoid reading the names of the people playing.

THE RULES...

Behavior rules
No offensive behavior anywhere
Remember that this is the internet. Don't be insulted if someone calls you an idiot.
No offensive character names. If in doubt about a name, pick another one.

to quote an admin ...also we should include sexism, but as it is now, it wont.
sexism is ok then? what a great advertisement for crpg

I care, maybe you have no respect for other peoples opinion but I do.
Call your character whatever you want but do not force me to read your childish name everytime you kill someone or say anything.
No other online game would allow these names so why this one?

Ok Change the rules on this forum then.
Its ok for admins to pick and choose which rules to enforce.
also being sexist is fine say what you want about em, admins dont care.......where does it end?
Why post a rules section if you are going to ignore them?

Vulgar names don't bother me, I guess. What does bother me is names in all caps or names with numbers in them (e.g. MURDERER, johnsmith1325). Those names are very offensive to my good taste.
