Is it still a pain with the latest changes?

Takes about 2hrs to become 21, so no.

It's still more painfull than leveling an xbow, a 2h or a 1h. Dunno about cavs though.
You can have a steady 15/15 at level 21, with max WM and PD, and a bit of athletics or whatever.
You'll still be squishy, slow, useless in melee, inaccurate.
It's way more fun leveling a 2h, if your blocking skills are up to it. You're already competitive and a force to be recon with.
Also, no matter your awareness, if you don't have teammates, you'll get picked off by cavs or sprint shielders pretty easily.
I usually play on siege at low levels. Though people tend to have higher tier armor, and there's less horses.

Yeah. For me it feels as if it takes a lot longer to become usefull. With melee and xbow you can deal nice damage really early. Cav is also rather slow because the first couple of horses die so easily.

I have 18/21 1h archery hybrid. 150wpf in archery, and about 70 wpf in 1h.
Untill I got my build to 18/18, I played as pure 1hander. Blunt weapon and some brains can do miracles. First get 15 str (for warhammer starting on around lvl 10), then agi to 18, then 3 more points to str, and start using rus bow. IMO after lvl 27 it's mostly about skill not levels.

I believe till level 24-25, as an archer, you will die a lot with getting little to no kills. Also no hybrid. (bad Lennu, bad!) :(
