Title: A secondary mode for bows; the arrow thrust
Post by: Jeric on July 09, 2013, 03:21:14 am
Press X while holding a bow and you'll have the bow in one hand, the arrow in the other. You can now perform a thrust attack with the arrow that does low damage. In the spoilers below I've put what I think the stats of the secondary mode should be. Similar to a dagger, you cannot block with the arrow/bow, but you can chamber. I thought of this idea while watching an archer get lanced by a horseman and I just had the thought, "what if?"

You want to chamber a big lance by a small arrow thats made of wood and a steel (or whatever) head? :p

No less realistic than doing the same with a practice dagger!

Sorry, the secondary mode for bows is already reserved for switching between equipped arrow types :P

I think its a great idea , but the damage you propose is too great : it should be only a "stunning" accessory and would glance on most armours but can help in some dire circonstances. Between 10 and 15 pierce (stabs pierce...).

Else you will find many people using this too efficiently, in strange circonstances, like the rondel dagger.

just take the damage which they are already adding to the bows damage (bodkin= 2 p tatar =8 c) that would force archers to skill ps  to do any damage what wouldn't make it op

I think the arrows should maybe have a meelee use similar to a dagger and obviously with no capability to chamber or block

Would be better if you could carry two types of arrows and switch between them (with secondary mode).  Would be much more useful than trying to stab someone in plate with an arrow.

i beg to differ, multiple arrow types are pretty useless because everyone just carries the the ammo of their preference and you really dont need more than 30 arrows a life. plus it would look hip

lol @ bodkins having almost as much pierce thrust damage as a katana

Being able to switch between stronger cut arrows, and weaker pierce arrows is useless?  You do realize that the bodkins work better on heavily armored targets, but you're better off using high cut arrows on low armor targets?

4 damage is not something id give crap about in crpg, if you are shielder you block them anyways and if you are pole or 2h you either dodge or die.
plus changing arrow type could be theoretically executed by sliding mouse button [imagine having two bows in ur inventory with the weight of one and different arrow type]. not to mention that if you have masterwork arrow type you dont really care about other types unless you loom another type.

I say 10 pierce damage for all arrwos + instant kill Uruk-Hai.

I'm predicting:
Melee get close, archer switches to arrow, archer stabs, archer glances, melee kills archer.

Really, it just sounds like giving every archer really shitty, one direction pikes to prevent them from running when anyone with any sense would run anyway.

nobody forces them to use this and nobody says it would be completely useless.

I don't think you understand the difference between cut and pierce and how they are affected by armor (or lack of).  Having both cut and pierce arrow types and the ability to switch between the two, would be extremely useful for archers, much more so than being able to do a weak stab with your arrow...

Someone had at one point proposed that bows themselves could be used as a rather weak weapon at one point (at least enough to block with, etc), but I think that suggestion was made not as necessary after many 1h were made 0 slot.

This proposal of arrows being used as weapons I just don't see.  I mean sure Legolas did it but how much other stuff did he do that isn't plausible for human beings?

Most archers have the means to defend themselves decently in melee through the use of at least a 0 slot 1h weapon, so just not sure if this is necessary, nor really all that realistic.

Also, even if you could stab with an arrow I almost cannot think of a worse idea than trying to stab a charging horseman with an arrow.

you speak of this feature as if it was already added and it sucked, imo doing 10 piercing damage as an archer can save your life from a near death enemy. plus as i said we all can have both, with ammo switching to be like weapon switching.

arrow types immo started to matter less because 1] tincans are rare 2] there are lot more of agi builds which go down in 2-3 arrows 3] everyone already loomed their one arrow type and does not use any other. it is the bow damage that matters, arrows, much less.
