Title: anyone here with crpg related interesting people in there families?
Post by: Torben on June 19, 2013, 09:50:36 pm
on my romanian side my family had a medieval thief king and a bunch of generations later a knight from the order of michael viteazul.  later even rode an arrabian horse ^^
same dude married in castle bran.  lots of cool stories but a bit timid of writing about them here.

my german fathers side is even more interesting:  they were peasant!

anyone else? : )

My brother is Apsalar_BRD. That strength ping-crutching spammer.

However, in all (though the above is true) seriousness...I've got an Uncle who was a military commander for an oppressive country. My grandfathers were both mechanics who were working for the Royal Navy when the Japanese came. We don't quite know how they survived unscathed, but there was some 'human sacrifice' shit involved.

I've got a lot of family members with odd cosmopolitan backgrounds.

My aunt is a celebrity chef within the Canadian Indian community. Those weirdos.

Ultimately, the oddest thing must be that I can't trace my family beyond my grandparents on either side.

I find these thing quite silly, because if you follow your family line all the way to the middle-ages, theres so huge amount of ancestors, that everyone has some kind of interesting persons there. Different thing ofc if you only look at your paternal heritage which isn't very modern or rational in biological way of seeing things.

But carry on  :)

ah dude it aint about bragging but about how sick it is what people in some kind related to you actually endured.  life writes the best stories,  and your grandparents are probably the best storytellers : )

just the way my mothers parents met and ultimately married is a better lovestory then 99% of all stories ever filmed.  ofc the war is a sick background for things to happen...

Got a common surname from English nobility. That's about it really. My family kinda skipped WW2. Either being too young or old to see the front lines.

Can run my mother's family name all the way back to some Danish lord who had a lot of land in England in the 14th century or something like that but supposedly the name can be traced back all the way to the 8th century overall.

I got quiet interested in my families past at one point and talked to a bunch of my relatives about it. Found out a few cool things.

Being Scottish my family belong to a clan ofc mine being the Fraser clan link for interested peeps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Fraser) interestingly my name and clan origionaly came from France. From the 12th century onwards my clan and ancestors fought in every major Scottish conflicts including Jacobites rebellion, 7 year war and also in the American Revolution.

In more recent times both my grandads were in WW2 my papa on my fathers side was a radioman for the Fraser Highlanders. On D Day he was loaned to a regiment of American troops who didnt have proper radio equipment he also liased with the British for this regiment.

My other papa on my mothers side was to young to be in the army at the time but did join the local "Home Guard". He guarded the plane that einsteins bumchum flew into Scotland with.

Pretty cool stuff, i have other stories aswell but these are for me

I guess I can add to this list; my ancestors were poor farmers (most likely), and before that poor viking farmers, and the son of the family went out on raids because only one of the sons could inherit the fathers farm.

vovka,  no bears?

cool shit guys : )
if you have grandparents,  try talking to them about stories from the past,  the little and the large ones are most often so unique and cool... and if put into context of history quite amazing.

Grandparents are all dead, the only stories i ever heard was of how my potential uncles and aunts died as children, as they fled from the reds. Fun times. :)

Besides a few civil war artifacts (in the color of brown), being related (somehow, as in brothers sons sons daughters son, not directly) to the founders of KKK in Texas or Cali or somewhere entirely different, not sure which one, one of my grandparents went insane after WW2, and I might very loosely be related to general Pershing (years since I looked at my family tree though), I don't know that much of my family history.

My grandpa used to be in russian captivity in WW2 and then fled with 3 other guys by taking a russian uniform and by one of them being able to speak russian. He also told that later one of his comrade was shot while they were fleeing, he didn't went any deeper though.

He also was officer in the Wehrmacht but I don't know which rank of it exactly.

The oldest person traced in my family was Gustav Vasas scribe who was sent on the king errands from Stockholm to Turku. There he married a finnish woman. After that it's mostly boring stuff.

There is a castle still called by our family name, my silly ancestors failed to secure male line in 19th century. When I was a kid we were visiting it with a big group of kinship - we felt like we're gonna retake it when parking and getting out of 3 cars with like 15 people (many kids) :)

My great grandparents (mom's dad's father on republican side and father's mother's father and uncle on fascist side) were not exactly friendly to each other, to the point that they fought in different sides against each other during the Spanish civil war. Do not think that they were in the same battle, since there were very few around my area, but there was hard feelings for quite a long time.
Then when my parents had been dating for years and wanted to get married, some of those descendants (like 3rd line uncles, or something like that) saw it wrong and complained, but my parents said fuck them all and went ahead with it.

I do not know much from previous time, other than both sides of my family (at least their family names) coming from Majorca about 400 years ago when my area was repopulated after the muslims living there were kicked from the area and their properties expropriated.

One of my great great Grandfathers, fought in the revolution against the Turks in 1821, his grandchild, my grandfather, was 15 years old, and he fought in WW2 , and after the WW2 ended, he fought in a civil war against the commie bastards, sadly a grenade explode near him, and the fragments were stuck in his lungs, and the medicine in Greece back there, wasn`t the best, and they could not remove them, he died 16 years later  from lung cancer, the same year that my grandmom gave birth to my dad..

my grandma on my mothers side had to flee as a child with her mother and sisters from the now Polish area, that was German before WW2 and was given to Poland in retribution for the waste laid to the Polish homeland.

my great-grandma on my fathers side had a big garden with a lot of greenhouses, her and her family were basically THE local food producers. she had a crazy husband who beat the kids (including my grandma) who died then in battle ("hopefully painful", as my granny says). they had a big house and took in/had to take in refugees after the war, and afaik those were not German ones. the house still belongs to the family and I also got to know my great-grandma, her cakes were the best (she died with 86 or so, just 2 years ago).

my married-in grandpa on my fathers side also had a lot of stuff to tell, about German and Polish refugees in the outskirts of my hometown and the surrounding villages, as well as the Russians hunting down and taking away German technology ... XD
those Russians were all friendly and jolly though, and good to children, as my grandpa was at the time.

I have also a very old german family name that goes way back to the middle ages. but it's a name for castlebuilding craftsmen, not royalty.

hm,  I was wondering...

a little competition:  write a semi-fictional story with true elements from your families history.  comic style or other artwork is welcome, too, but with a describing text to it.

prizes I am sponsoring are

5k for 3rd
15k for 2nd
30k for 1st place

if we get at least seven entries.  Will do a proper thread to it this week end,  and am guessing a time frame of a month should suffice.

any of you think this might be of interest?
