Title: Film Recommendation
Post by: Lannistark on June 17, 2013, 04:54:27 pm
I've recently picked up films again, been watching quite a few and I've ran out of good films to see. You guys feel like recommending some good films to me?

Themes I like:

TV Series are fine as well, but I'd rather prefer films as I don't want to watch hours and hours of something unless I really like it.

I'll give 100k gold to whoever recommends the film I like most after watching it.

- I'm a huge fan of Blade Runner. Best sci-fi (with excuse of Star Wars) in history. Great reflexive monologues coming at the end. Great stuff. Ridley Scott's best work together with Alien.
- I've watched Chronicles of Riddick - very entertaining film.
- Matrix we all know, I really liked it first time I watched the entire series at the cinema, another jewel.
- District 9 I've watched as well, disturbing but really good movie. Makes no account for trying to hide the most unappealing scenes from the spectator.

I must admit the Babylon AD Film looks really nice from what I've read. Gonna watch it, and I'll give you some feedback later on. I've heard something about Battlestar Galactica - will try as well. Thanks!

When is the last time you've watched Alien (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/?ref_=sr_1)? I know it's way too long for me, gonna watch the movies sometime soon myself. :)

Kind of random suggestions with some sci-fi elements: Moon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) ,  Source Code (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0945513/?ref_=tt_rec_tti), Akira (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094625/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)

For thrillers, The Departed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1), Shutter Island (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1130884/?ref_=sr_1)

Don't really watch historical stuff except for WW2 stuff. Come and See (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1), Letters from Iwo Jima (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498380/?ref_=sr_1), The Dirty Dozen (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061578/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)

I quite liked Battlestar Galactica btw for a bit, but it got pretty heavy handed with the religion theme in the second series and I just lost interest. Apart from that I really liked it. Farscape is good and Firefly

I watched Alien when I was a kid, about 10 years ago. I have to watch it again, I've almost forgot about it. I watched Prometheus a week ago, and despite not being a bad film, people are obssesed in comparing it with Alien (since it's intended to be its prequel). The moment you do so it just fails as a film.

Shutter Island :O I have to watch that one !!

I'd recommend rewatching the Alien movies, in directors cut where possible ::thumbs up::

Prometheus was pure nonsense no matter what glasses you watched it with, unless special effects are enough to satisfy, no matter how bad, inconsistent and cliché the story, characters and dialogue. In my humble opinion, at least.

Probably my favourite movies in the thriller genre are the 'Pusher' trilogy, by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Valhalla Rising etc.):

Pusher (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2732498432/tt0117407?ref_=tt_pv_md_3)
Pusher II (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396184/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4)
Pusher III (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425379/?ref_=fn_al_tt_5)

(they are in Danish but you can find them texted on 'the bay' among other places)

You've probably seen it but... The 13th Warrior (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120657/).

My favorite movie. Some might find it silly or corny but that goes for most films directed by John McTiernan. And I like those movies.

Actually, I prefer movies from the 80s and 90s over more recent blockbusters. Modern movies are are trying to be too serious and failing in the process (couldn't finish Dark Knight Rises because I started laughing uncontrollably in second half of the movie).

There are many good movies but instead of recommending some of them I'll tell you what to avoid. Do not watch movies directed by J.J. Abrams, they are pure, refined crap.

Have you watched Thomas Vinterberg's newest drama, with Mads Mikkelsen 'Jagten' (the Hunt)? It's warmly recommended, too.

This I agree with!

The 13th Warrior is a great, entertaining movie!

Oh god don't even start about the modern Batman. If I have to listen to Bale pulling off his Batman impression again, ahahaha.

Actually I prefer 80-90's stuff more as well. Less nonsense, no CGI, et cetera.

Here's one that I watched on TV a few days ago, although it has Pacino in it as the main character, I've never even heard of it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098273/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098273/)

Check it if you haven't already, it's not what you'd expect, keeps you interested throughout because of how it's written.

I'm really not up-to date when it comes to movies though, so a lot of things are unknown for me.

The Wire was awesome.

I see Winding-Refn was mentioned, so I can't help but mention Drive (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780504/?ref_=sr_1).

Thriller wise, Side Effects (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2053463/?ref_=sr_1) was pretty freakin' good.

Headhunters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/?ref_=sr_1) was great as well.

And yeah Torben, you can never go wrong with Danny Boyle movies.

Thriller: One I already mentioned in another post.  The movie Zero Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFNQI-mpGmM) is based off the Columbine Massacre.  Shot in a "Video diaries" or found films and security footage style.  Definitely a move that will make your shiver a bit.

Sci-fi: It is not an amazing movie but it is a personal favorite of mine since I was a kid.  Titan A.E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inGUZEDJllY).  Basic idea but it is a fun movie and was quite good for its time.

Phase 7 was pretty good if you speak Spanish or don't mind reading subtitles:

It didn't get very good ratings, but the plot and the characters were believable and pretty realistic, a good movie over all.  I'm a large fan of the post-apocalypse sub-genre and all of it's own branches, so if anyone has any other good Post-Apoc movies please let me know.

Cloud Atlas fucking blew my mind, I loved it, I really didn't think I would but damn it was well written.

I love the idea that they put behind the movie, some people will be skeptic I'm sure, but I found it remotely believable.  The acting was great, the way everything tied together in the long run was also pretty god damned fascinating.

Movies:

District 9 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1136608/):
Apartheid in South Africa. Except this time with crab people and humans. Strongly recommend if you're looking for a slightly different take on the sci-fi genre.

I watched the movie it was great, I hope they make a sequel. I also hate humans now after finishing the movie.

Kung Fu Hustle
Another kung fu actionfilm, that I swear to god also parodies other kung fu films with messed up over the top fightscenes and stands perfectly on its own with ridiculous comedy. There is a fat landlord lady who doesnt allow her tennants to use water and who apparently also knows kung fu......
(click to show/hide)

RocknRolla
I seriuslly liked this movie. Especially for its style. Its also got this wild rockstar feeling to it, like getting away with a serius crime is the best feeling in the world and cocking up and getting beaten to death isnt really so tragical.
(click to show/hide)

The Devil's Double
Some dude gets to be Saddam Hussein's sons double. Ye ye ye...has absolutely nothing to do 'murican HOORAAmarines. A pretty damn good movie imo. I enjoyed it alot. Also the trailer for this movie....fucking awesome, definately watch the trailer below!

Series? Well I do like Person of Interest. Sry, there is no good trailer for this one.

After watching 2 seasons of it im seriuslly hooked. The mainchars are some ex-specops-spy-marine-op guy and a rich secret presumed dead IThackerengineer dude who invented "the machine", who basically team up to save people whose murder or crime commitment the machine predicts. The machine is basically a program that spies on everybody, everywhere to detect acts of terrorism. Ehh...its complex. Watch it, its good.

Random selection, might not, or might be your taste.

Das Boot! (the 3.5h version)

Saw it on VHS 15 years ago, and knew it was good, but I remembered I found it boring then. I couldn't turn it off! Awesome, fantastic film. Just the opening scenes where they have a party is unforgettable. Great, great, great film.

Takeshi Kitano's: "Hana-bi" (1997)

Very good revenge-film about a detective that goes on a last journey with his wife.. :)

Stalker (1979) Andrey Tarkovsky

One of the strangest films you will likely ever see. See it with an open mind, like a child. Don't try to understand, and just be with yourself while watching it. If you are patient enough, it will reward you like no other film you have seen, or will see. (Not for everyone though.. don't watch it while sleepy!)

Primer- science fiction- is a 2004 American science fiction drama film about the accidental discovery of a means of time travel. The film was written, directed, and produced by Shane Carruth and was completed on a budget of $7,000. Lots of technical jargon- it takes a bit of concentration to keep up and piece everything together, but it's not too difficult.

The Mist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0884328/) (I'm pretty sure someone recommended this movie in that older topic about movies).

Also, I liked Monsters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1470827/?ref_=sr_5) but many find it incredibly boring for some reason. I liked it a lot more than District 9.

One of my favorite movies is The Fountain (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/). Most people can't stand that movie. If you happen to like The Fountain I suggest you watch two more movies directed by Darren Aronofsky: The Wrestler (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1125849/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) and Pi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138704/) (great little movie). You can skip his other movies, Black Swan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0947798/) is garbage and Requiem for a Dream (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/), while being a great movie is an awful experience because it portraits life of drug addicts and that ain't pretty (if you like to watch that stuff I also recommend Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082176/)).

I'm not sure have you seen some iconic movies of the past like: Predator (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093773/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1), Conan the Barbarian (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082198/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2) and imho the best sci-fi movie ever made (I prefer it over Terminator 2: Judgement Day (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103064/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4) and Blade Runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)) Paul Verhoeven's The Robocop (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093870/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2).

Also great and quite famous movie which I recommend is No Country for Old Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477348/). If you happen to like it, you can try Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206634/) (it's pretty depressing but has certain quality, it's quite realistic movie despite being sci-fi)

And if that's not enough for you, try to find english subs for the most expensive and legendary serbian movie Boj na Kosovu (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096966/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1). It has some hardcore nationalistic views but it's epic gore fest and battle scenes aren't half bad. It explains Serbia very well. Probably the one medieval battle movie you haven't seen yet.

Also there's another movie I'm quite sure many people haven't seen, it's called The Boys from Brazil (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077269/?ref_=fn_al_ch_1a).

Eh, possible. I just tried to avoid the "based on true story" part in general while watching it, just to enjoy it more. Which I did. I looked it up. Alot of people involved did state that the guys story was bullshite. In which he replied it was a "statesecret". Which is wierd as hell due to the fact that everybody knew that Saddam himself had alot of doubles and yet nobody knew anything about his son having a double. I mean Saddam was the Man there, shouldnt his doubles have been a bigger state secret than his sons? Just dont take it as a true story and its a solid actionmovie.

Yah. Used to sneak out of bed to watch it with my brother when I was around around 7 or so. It always aired around midnight.

Rewatched it again 5-6 years ago or so. Still love it, though it is pretty cheesy at points
It took a while to reach Finland.

Stalker is quite an experience, just enjoy the scenery and athmosphere. But like with many older movies, don't get impatient.

I like Aronofsky a lot, and especially The Fountain :). What I love about the movie is that while it is hard to get what it is all about it becomes pretty clear and simple if you rewatch and it does all make sense. I liked Black Swan though, too... Pi has the best pill-swallow scenes in movie history, also Autechre as film music!

And I liked Monsters and District 9 both. Btw what has Children of Men to do with No Country for Old Men? very good movies anyway.

On a different note I recommend the original The Day of the Jackal (http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0069947/?ref_=fn_al_tt_5) a lot, great movie and much better than the remake, IMO. (great to compare though, the gun for example :D)

Also I highly recommend every single movie by Paul Thomas Anderson (http://akas.imdb.com/name/nm0000759/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1). Sidney is great (Samuel Jackson in full leather :)), There will be Blood is a masterpiece and who doesn't know Magnolia?

If you haven't seen Seven Samurai, I highly recommend it.

"Seven Samurai (七人の侍 Shichinin no Samurai?) is a 1954 Japanese period adventure drama film co-written, edited, and directed by Akira Kurosawa. The film takes place in 1587 during the Warring States Period of Japan. It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai (ronin) to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops.

Seven Samurai is described as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made,[2] and is one of a select few Japanese films to become widely known in the West for an extended period of time. It is the subject of both popular and critical acclaim; it was voted onto the top three of the Sight & Sound critics' list of greatest films of all time in 1982, and onto the directors' top ten films lists in the 1992 and 2002 polls.[3]" ~ wikipedia

Did anyone watch L'Assault (French movie)? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1793239/

It got pretty low rating (5.9) on imdb for some reason but I loved it and it's a really great movie if you like movies about special forces. It's based on a real event where terrorists hijacked a french airplane in Algeria in 1994. There's no 360-no-scope-headshot-pistol-dual-wielding heroes in the movie so it doesn't really follow Hollywood style movies which might be the reason for the low rating.

Nonetheless I recommend this movie and The Eagle and Argo, for now. I might recommend more :D

Das Boot! (the 3.5h version)

Saw it on VHS 15 years ago, and knew it was good, but I remembered I found it boring then. I couldn't turn it off! Awesome, fantastic film. Just the opening scenes where they have a party is unforgettable. Great, great, great film.

One of the best movies ever made.
