Title: Cockroach Free Lives
Post by: Kalam on June 15, 2013, 01:51:25 am
I fucking hate cockaroaches. Unfortunately, I've lived in hot, humid cities for most of my life. I need some places to fantasize about that don't have this villainous vermin. And before you suggest keeping all food in tightly sealed containers, immaculately cleaning your living space, etc...I know...my strong dislike of cockroaches has led me to do a lot of things. Including fostering the growth of spiders in state that has both the brown recluse and the black widow. If there's some brand of pesticide you'd like to share, I'd like to hear about that, though. Or some measure that's not common knowledge.

So...what's a good place to live a cockaroach free life?

I've lived in Washington state for a long time now, never seen a cockroach once.  I guess it's a fair trade considering we have huge earwig and large house spider populations...

Besides some tiny orangeshelled bugs that fly and a few minor spiders there aren't really no insects in Denmark.

I have never seen a cockroach not in a cage in Minnesota (though I've heard about some in crappy apartment buildings- they're definitely here, they're everywhere). We do get a lot of ticks and mosquitos for the entire summer though, not to mention god damn CHIGGERS.

I don't think I've ever seen a cockroach in Saskatchewan. But earlier this year I went to the states and ended up spending a couple of nights in some really awful hotels on the road, and a trailer park in Alabama. That was sure a different experience! It gave me more of an appreciation for the insects here though, even if they are all out to steal my blood. At least I don't have to deal with cockroaches, scorpions, or stupid poisonous spiders!

Funny thing is, last night I dreamt about cockroaches being all around me, coming from my mouth, ears and stuff. Silly nightmare

I've seen them in Spain and the Canary Islands. Don't recall ever seeing one in the UK though, probably not warm/humid enough.

I've been to Spain a lot (although not in the most humid/warm places) and I've never seen one. However I admit the average hygiene would let one think there might be cockroaches everywhere.

Well I've mainly been to southern Spain where it's probably hotter and I imagine you are more likely to get them in some places than others depending on the hygiene levels. I think the most I had seen were in Gran Canaria, fucking everywhere out there, atleast they were many years ago when I went, fuckers got up into our apartment and everything. Couldn't go out at night without stepping on a bunch of them.

It would probably be the same, we aren't that different when it comes to work ethics

For example, four years ago I recognized which party will win on the elections. It was new party and I was thinking to join, do all the dirty work and try to get as high I can go. Partially because of laziness and my reluctance to do everything it takes to become a successful politician in Serbia, I gave up on that idea.

Let me tell you this, worse people than me are now leading the state. And were doing that in the past. Whole system is based on relations. High school friends, colleagues, buddies from the kindergarten. Their skills don't matter, you just need to know right people. That is why corruption is flourishing and why anyone with half a brain is successful politician and rich as fuck (law says they should go to jail but who cares about laws around here).

As far as I know those centipedes are poisonous. So if you kill the centipede the frog is going to die anyway after the first attack.
So let the centipede feast.

Nope, that's brutal. I am always defending the weaker side and in this case that's the frog and as I already mentioned, I like frogs way more than insects.

When insect isn't bothering me, I sometimes take them outside unharmed. But those annoying insects and predators, no mercy for them.

No. It's because

Empathy = genetic similarity

Unless in rare cases where something less similar to you is more cute.

I hate killing spiders, does that make me one of them? I feel empathy towards all "good" creatures and hatred towards all "bad". Bad are those who put their noses in someone else's business.

@Zlisch: Yeah, frogs are cute and centipedes are hideous. Hideous creatures can be cool but centipedes aren't one of them.

No they are not. For me, mosquitoes are the worst creatures on earth, next to bacteria and viruses. They are so damn annoying. Today I was in the forest and damn flies and mosquitoes ruined my fun all the time.

Cockroaches are nasty but they are aware of their "good looks" so they tend to stay hidden and don't bother others most of the time. Also, cockroaches are survivors. They can survive in extremely harsh conditions. They are also ancient creatures.

Yeah I don't mind cockroaches. They look damn ugly but are pretty harmless otherwise.

I hate mosquitoes as well, although there comes a point where you get used to being bitten. Ants I think are the next one from that point of view. Whilst I was in India it was impossible to keep the ants out all the time. I had a few sleepless nights where I imagined them in my bed after being bitten by quite a few whilst I was asleep. Plenty whilst I was awake and squashed the buggers when they did.

I think he's more of a cockroach but yeah :D.

I guess I'm so used to mosquitos... Northern Finland, Lapland. Every summer is like this. I don't really like them but I can deal with them. I have been fishing in the river for couple of days last week so I got my mosquito tolerance quite high. Can't even breathe there at the riverbank without a mosquito net over my head :D

Good thing with mosquitoes is that you'll learn to ignore them. Until they land and try to sting ofc, then give them a slap :D  And over time you'll become immune to their stings. So even if they get to suck a nice load of your blood, it wont itch afterwards. And ofc clothing, repellents and positioning helps a lot. By positioning I mean that mosquitoes try to avoid sunny open spaces because of the wind and bright light which makes them easy to spot and catch for birds/other mosquitoeaters.

Cockroaches.... lil fuckers will even survive a nuclear holocaust lol.

The town I live in has a series of connected canals, and even though it's always very nice out here on the Washington coast, we still get these huge fucking swarms of mosquitos and other tiny airborne insects.  I can't even go for a run during the summer time on the streets because there's huge clouds of insects in the way.  More than once have I had to blow a mosquito or two out of my nose.

Goddamn pests.

They (along with various types of gnats &c.) have a tendency of kamikaze diving into every available orifice during the summer months (Georgia) here. It makes doing anything outdoors a pain.

No they are not. For me, mosquitoes are the worst creatures on earth, next to bacteria and viruses. They are so damn annoying. Today I was in the forest and damn flies and mosquitoes ruined my fun all the time.

Man, I wish they hid here. They're in the open. All the time. I was lived with a shitty room mate in an apartment block that had gone past it's fumigation date. The cockroaches there would scurry straight for your food as you were attempting to cook and eat it. I haven't encountered anything quite so horrendous, but man, they do seem to show up at least once a day here- which I know means the apartment is probably crawling with them. Then again, all sorts of insects seem to find their way in here. I tried patching up any hole I could find with dry wall, but there's still crickets, centipedes, millipedes, various types of beetles, and shit just lollygagging around my floor.

Roaches seem to be the most numerous, though. It's driving me crazy. I might have to get my landlord to fumigate this place, but where would my neighbors stay, you know?

Incidentally, my chief insect complaint has now shifted to mosquitoes. Swarms of these (I'm not exaggerating- dozens land on me and manage to get their meal through relatively thick clothing) have been hounding me every morning.
