I presume retiring won't cost huge amounts seeing as you have to be lvl 30 so where am I meant to pour my money?
I have my preffered gear set that maintains well, and I'd rather not upgrade any pieces so that I start to lose gold.
From what I can see the best thing to do is have 2 gear sets one for normal play and the other for burning gold - is this the only way to go?

How about buying back your skill points? All of us have some times accidently clicked wrong field and wasted precious skill point in progess.
Let say that one point costs 500-1000 pieces of gold and you could just add one more button in the char page that decreases 1 point from said skill and charges your gold automatically. Or the big RESET-button that reset all the skill-points with small discount on the price(10-15%?) That way even newer players could try out different builds or if they fuck up their build, they could fix it if they have enough dough.
