Post by: 7000bc on May 06, 2011, 07:16:52 am
Any xbowmen out there have any worthwhile tips to share for an xbow noob?

Use the hunter xbow for best style instead of the rest and be sure to stay in the open to avoid cav and archers.  :mrgreen:

Anyways

Hide
shoot
Reload
Repeat

Looks like the tactic I use as polearm/xbow hybrid. I use a normal xbow but I shoot on close range only, make sure you always hit its a waste to miss your bolts. Using your xbow on long range is mostly a bad idea unless you have insane skills.

Does anyone know why my alt can't equip a light or hunting xbow?  I only have 36 wpf in xbow and I am wondering if there is a new wpf requirement with the newest patch?

LOL - Never mind Im on melee only tuna town server.

do not shoot directly straight at your target.  Try to be 45-60 degrees off center when shooting, as the target will remain in the kill box longer.

Same thing Germans did in WWI with their machine guns and owned Allies.

The biggest advantage of the xbow is obviously the ability to hold your shot without losing accuracy, so play to that strength.

If someone without a shield is zig-zagging towards you, don't move your reticule just wait till they run into it.

You should prioritise cav since you're the best equipped to take them down; do this by waiting till they're running in a straight-ish line perpendicular to you, lead them by a good amount and fire. For slow moving/nearby/shieldless cav, aim at the rider instead.

On flat ground, go for head shots, especially when shooting into a large mob. On maps where you know where everyone runs to at the start of the round, try to be in a position to shoot into them as they get there, because there's almost no chance they can all get out of the way.

Going 1v1 with an archer on open ground or at close to medium range probably won't go your way. Wait till they're distracted and shooting at someone else. 100% of archers stop to shoot, so wait until they do so and then head shot them. You'll only get one shot before they realise you're there, and hitting an archer who is actively trying to dodge you is not worth the effort.

-Reloading hides you.
-Always reload in cover, out of sight.
-Use the reloading time to scout your next target (tilde key), also scout for ninjas and cav (if you see cav, make a mental note where they are and where they are heading).
-Shoot only when you know your going to hit.
-Always try to shoot your target from the back or the rear.
-Your biggest advantage is not being seen.

For starters, my advanced xbow AI algorithm should do :
Code: [Select]
int main()
{
 while(alive())
 {
  aim();
  shoot();
  hide();
  reload();
  pop_up();
 }

 return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}

void aim ()
{
 wait_for_an_archer_to_stop_moving_before_he_shoots_and_boom_headshot();
}

void reload ()
{
 make_sure_no_one_is_ninjaing_you()
}

80% of my kills are immobile archers on my pure xbow alt. And I'm often the last man standing. Level 19 so far.
