Title: Difference between Pole Axes and 2h Axes
Post by: JeroBeros on June 06, 2013, 03:11:28 am
Hi!

I'm new in CRPG, I have lvl 30 2h char. I want to know what is the difference between a 2h Axe and a Pole Axe for my 2nd gen. I was looking the stats of the 2h bardiche and the pole bardiche and I dont saw difference in dmg, only the pole have more range, then the pole is better? 2h have some kind of bonus on damage?

I speak about bardiche but I think is the same on others cut tipe poles.

Thank you.

Both are equally fun. Try it out even if you don't have any wpf.

Polearms have more base range and are typically not Unbalanced, but 2hands have more ranged added from their animations and are typically Unbalanced (shorter window to cancel a swing) and are, in general, cheaper than Polearm axes.

For reference, here are the lengths animations add/detract for polearms/2hands:

2h
Overhead = +15
Left-to-right = +17
Right-to-left = +13
Thrust = +80 (This may be slightly wrong with the new stab animation)

2h Polearms
Overhead = -15
Left-to-right = -7
Right-to-left = -2
Thrust = +19

Also, 2hands in general seem to have less issues with clipping on scene objects than polearms, and shorter ones even less so- so less length on paper isn't always a detriment. At the bar that girl might be a 7, in your bedroom she'll go up to a 10, and the morning after she may drop down to a 5. Environment dictates.

Poleaxes are nice for stabbing people and rearing horses, but otherwise 2h axes will outperform them in almost any other application.

2H animation is different. faster and better against horses and other 2H.

 They fulfill different roles. Polearms are almost always better in team fights and are better for pauses. 2H weapons can feint like crazy and will certainly be better 1v1.

Best thing about picking 2H axes is being able to use 2H swords

I do belive 2h is far better in group fights than any polearm unless we're talking about spears.

If you're new I would recommend 2h axes for sure...

I found myself glancing or having my swings stopped by allies,terrain,walls,etc... a lot with polearm long war axe, so much so that I couldn't fully enjoy it.

If you want less frustration I would recommend 2h axes over pole axes.

Thank you. Finally I was trying other kinds of 2h and I decided to take a 2h sword. Was really fun and easy than axes and it looks really nice. I choose the Sword of War cause have a good speed and nice cut damge.

And thus, a new 2h hero is born.

2h is considered the easiest class to play and OP and gay. Also only 14 year play 2h because they think they are the hero of their favourite fantasy story. Prepare for some hate/scorn.

Time for a serious answer :D

Twohanded axes:
 - Better animations (addition length, less glancing, more early on in swings damage, easier to aim for headcuts)
 - Unbalanced (trait, not unbalanced as in OP or UP). This means that they are harder (almost impossible) to feint with, they slow you down more and they are also generally slower than their polearms counter part.

Polearms axes:
 - Can rear horses.
 - Most of them are balanced (not unbalanced).
 - Some (primarily poleaxes) are longer.

The only reason you would pick a twohanded axe over any of the other two handed weapons (that are top tier. E.g. Great Swords) would be to destroy shields or for looks. I would not recommend anyone new to the game to use an unbalanced weapon as it is bad in so many ways.

On the other hand poleaxes and the great long axe are good weapons, that in most cases perform better than twohanded axes.

Really now, most of them can't.

I always feel like unbalanced weapons swing faster than an unbalanced weapon with the same speed, the animation looks more jerky and fast. Like they chamber (get weapon in ready position) slower, but swing faster. For instance, the War Cleaver appears to have a faster swing than a Highland Claymore if you ask me, when talking about the speed at which the weapon moves.

Unbalanced is not an all-negative trait. You will do slightly more teamhits but especially with the faster ones, you can do wicked, if slightly less controllable feints.
