If you quit in Australia you can't get any free government money huzzah!
If you get fired you can get free government money huzzah!
----
I was working 45 hours a week as IT support tech for 19$ an hour. I have another job fixing printers where I get paid 30$ an hour that I was doing for another 10-15 hours...
The place I was working for was forcing me to buy a car so I could carry stuff around for work. But they weren't paying a fuel allowance and they weren't paying a vehicle allowance. Both of which they are obligated to do in Queensland if the car must be used for work purposes other than travel. And hauling shit counts extracurricular!
When they hired me they gave me 12 hours notice to show up at work. Which I did. When I told them I had a shift starting at 4pm on Friday at my old work but couldn't get it filled so would have to go to, but was willing to do the 6am shift so I could make it in time the director of the company no less had a melt down "You made a commitment and a promise to us, not them, you don't work for them anymore."
The people he was telling me to flip off sent flowers to my sister funeral and helped me move house 3 times in the last two years so as far as I'm concerned he can go get fucked!
They then dumped me in a chair with a phone and a computer and 0 documentation. Not even a list of passwords and pushed 20 jobs into a queue I didn't even have access to :S
The place is a disaster, run by jerks that pay like shit! I'm currently short listed for a job handing people iPads that will pay me 28.50$ per/hour + super... Also the contract ends in September when the new conservative government is likely to be elected. As soon as they are elected on my fucking birthday of all things :( I will be throwing my shit in a bag and moving to Berlin waving my British passport like a vampire scaring crucifix in front of me!
Then the plan is to get back into Gripping. Fuck this IT bullshit I like lifting heavy things~!~

Can't believe we were moved to the "no one is allowed to uptoke" section :(
Yeah in Australia 19$ is a low ball wage. You get paid about 22$ for working in a cafe.

Never leave a job unless you have something else lined up already, unless your job is cRPGS
Meh, depends on which sector/branch you are working, and whether you have saved up a bit. I quit my last job in december and only just started working again. Software development is really an employee's market right now, I constantly get pmed on xing for other jobs (even did while I was still employed).

Ok Frank I figured it was an unemployment insurance thing getting paid out if you get fired vs not getting it if you quit (that's the same as it is here in the USA, USA, USA!, at least in Minnesota). I hear Australia's a bitchin place to live, but if you're looking for good pay, and a good economy, the area up here in Minneapolis/St. Paul is very good (there's lots and lots of IT jobs posted around here). And there's lots of beautiful looking people that live up here, and we just passed gay marriage. But it gets cold in the winter, so it's probably not for the Summer Islander types.
