Title: Music you listen to when studying
Post by: BASNAK on May 06, 2013, 10:27:08 pm
I usually listen to music while studying to concentrate better. But It's quite hard to find music that wont distract me from studying. So here's a thread for everyone to spam music that helps you study Which I shamelessly will steal from you

Here's some I find very helpful for studying:

(Yes I know skyrim, but its very relaxing.)

I only listen to music when trying to drown out other noise in noisy areas like the train and then I just listen to classical symphonies.

According to wikipedia this should help. Not sure about last two but first composition certainly helps. Keeps you awake and focused but it's not an attention grabber. You can listen to any kind of classical music, but these create so called Mozart effect. Relaxing music is bad for studying, you'll fall asleep...

Also, I like electronic music like stuff from first Deus Ex. Also Barber's Adagio for strings is fine choice imho (trance version by tiesto too intrusive).

I personally cannot listen to most classical piano music (like the ones Leshma posted) while studying, since I used to play it for a lot of years and listening to it makes me want to figure out the notes and play them, so I start moving my hands around as if I had a keyboard in front of me and focus more on that that on the studying.
However, I enjoy listening to Mike Oldfield especially, but also Enya and others, since my parents used to have it on a lot during my childhood and I grew up listening to those songs while studying.

I can't listen to music while studying, but I do when I'm writing stuff that doesn't require much concentration.

When I was still in school (jesus I sound like an old geezer, only one... two years removed from college) I'd listen to weird atmospheric alt rock at low volume. It's too easy to get engaged/distracted with music if it's upbeat or loud.

I used to be chronically ill as a child, and listening to my parents' Ennio Morricone vinyls was always strangely comforting whenever I was with fever.

Morricone still has that effect on me, so he's the perfect companion while studying.

I usually prefer silence when studying / writing / doing anything that requires a high level of concentration.

One exception, esp. in situations when I have a hard time concentrating: brainwave entrainment sessions that have been specifically designed to boost concentration, memory functions and creative thought processes. Favorite: the stuff from Volition Thought House (http://www.mind-reality.com/vthbrainwavemusic), specifically the "BrainAmp" and "IvyFocus" sessions.

Or: BEFORE I start with the learning/research/writing - 30 min of meditation, enhanced with the use of a mind machine (I use the elderly Procyon, there are better ones (http://www.mind-reality.com/kasina-mind-system) now, but it still does the trick for me).

Most efficient way for me.

That kind of music, I only study at night because it works for me. I need some lively music, or else my mind gets tired and I zone out every few seconds. Shit is cash and life feels unreal.

I'm probably the only one but I like to study while listening to Animals as Leaders. I turn down the volume so it's in the background though. Kascade and CAFO are my favs

The Dj0nt is strong on this one. Needs more Meshuggah faec:

When I had to study, I usually had instrumental music as background (less distraction with lyrics), be it Post Rock, Blues, Jazz, and prog stuff. Used to work fine.

Simple: I don´t. Although, I had this one song I listened to nonstop whenever I was programming, since I needed something to constantly cool my nerves so I won´t loose my shit about those god damned java/c++ exercises
The good thing about this song is that it´s perfect to play in an eternal loop. Due to all the breaks in the song you never really figure out when it has stopped or when it started again (take this with you http://www.infinitelooper.com).

Gosh, listening to this again reminds me of the hourless nights I´ve spend on frustrating programming exercises, mostly until I was hearing the birds outside singing again in the early morning. Thanks to that, the song pretty much represents "eternity" or "a neverending night" for me.

...

I´m so glad I don´t have to program shit again.
