Won't work. The majority of all players won't play it for a longer time, as it would require them to change their behaviour. And they do need to change it, because it is causing massive balance problems. Sometimes people just need to be forced.

buff throwing lances in melee.  add knock down or switch pierce on side swings.

Like other throwing weapons, the melee mode gains +4 damage on all attack directions at MW. By comparison to similar melee weapons, the melee mode has rather competitive stats.
