What is Power Strike for? do crossbowman find it handy?

Power Strike affects the damage you will do with a melee weapon. A sidearm is a good thing to have as a crossbowman. With the slot system going on, a 1hand is probably your best bet, though polearms have a few 0 slot and 1 slot things if you'd rather.
