Title: Concept art for a competition
Post by: Mushy on April 24, 2013, 06:54:05 pm
Ok my class entered some bullshit competition where we have to come up with an idea for a game which I don't really know much about, they are doing all the hard stuff like script, story etc and they asked me to design the art

Don't know what the game is about, but I liked the idea of something like this so I went with it

Obviously I want it to be the best I can make it, so destroy my rectum with critique #yolo #swag

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

kind of rough, needs more refining but I can't really be fucked, took like 4 hours already

thanks guys :D As an artist, I only usually see the flaws in my work, probably why I think it looks worse than it actually is

I cant critique it fairly considering I can't even make the "Figure" part of a stick figure look right.

Although, I will say that I like the way things seem to almost blend together, Only thing that I would give a negative thing about is the character in the picture.

He is almost just part of the background, (Which I understand most of it is supposed to blend together) although a more profound color would have been nice?

Other then that, I like it very much.

Yeah I see what you're saying, but I wanted to keep the same colour scheme for the whole thing, I did try making him a different tone to try and define him more, but he just looked like he'd been slapped onto the painting, didn't really fit in with everything else

Pretty good there mate, although I kinda feel that it lacks red colour, you know to give it a more Spring feeling.

Using blur to cover up lack of talent = 100 points.

It's nice but you should really refine that focal point more. I'm just asssuming that thing in the middle is a human since I can't tell from it's shape, lightning is really awkward aswell which doesn't help at all, light source in the center background for some reason creates a weird outline on one side and not on the other.

In short, if you want to make this sketch a lot better with little effort - make that human figure less blurry and more defined. Having everything blurry is a bad idea.

IMO pieces like these are pretty much spot-on for fantasy-ish games. Their blurriness leaves the imagination to work on the details.

Nice work mate.

That's very nice. I quite like the blur, it conveys a feeling rather than accurately depicting a scene.

Did you draw that with tablet?

It's not like I don't see and appreciate the effort. What irritates me is this circlejerking...

"It looks awesome!" "So great!" - well, no, sorry, but compared to a looooot of other things there are, it doesn't  :?

I actually know 2 people who do Digital Art for a living and... well... way to go.

I am not saying it looks crap but all this "AWESOME WITH SAUCE!" is just not justified  :|

Not to mention "I worked already 4 hours on it." - the guys I know invest 16 to 24 work hours into one piece.

Just saying. Looks good for a start but it's not "awesome" or "great"...

Molly: concept art != illustration. Noone working as a concept artist spends more than a couple of hours per sketch, because having it fine tuned, artsy and stuff isn't the point, the point is to communicate an idea. You spend as little time as possible bringing a painting to acceptable level of detail and move on.
