Side note: I seem to remember a mod for mount and blade in development devoted to ship to ship combat with a pirate theme... anyone remember it?

Eh, looked like a descent game. Whatever floats your boat I quess. Just dont go overboard with excitement or you will have one hull of a problem. Aboat time they release something like this.

That wasn't a mod, that was another game (like WFaS), Carribean something. Not sure if it got cancelled or is simply taking long to develop.
Actually there was a mod being developed called Pirates & Fishmod by Yoshiboy. IIRC he wanted to work for Taleworlds or at least get TW's support and access to Warband developer tools and continue to work on the mod as expansion to Warband, but they turned him down and gave the job to SiCH Studio. Can't imagine why, Yoshiboy's work looked Pretty damn promising (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlZsD25kAqo).

What attracts me the most is turn based. The idea of turn based with boats is weird tbh, how does it play out ?

It plays well I think. You give orders simultaneously with enemy, then hit play and your orderes play out in realtime for like ten seconds, then its time for turn 2. Thats in SP anyway, I imagine (and hope) its the same in MP. Whats cool is you can avoid shots by altering course etc. Also Friendly fire is on, collisions with any other ships/rigs/rocks hurt. Ships can go out of control, have bridge destroyed and go blind for a round etc. I like it, personally.

Is SP decent, long enough ? This seems to be mainly purchased for MP.

REally cool game, but buggy. Not really during gameplay, but it seems to lose your savegames. Plus you can save a ship loadout as a template and use it again.. but it seems to lose these randomly too :(
