Title: Your Favorite low upkeep items
Post by: WITCHCRAFT on April 15, 2013, 11:24:57 am
Many of the expensive items in crpg are good, and this makes sense. However, cost is a factor in item choice. Maybe you have an armored horse. Maybe you wear plate. Maybe this is your backup weapon or only used in niche situations. What low cost items do you like, and why? Here's some of my favorites:

Voulge (polearm)

This thing has 124 length (same as danish greatsword, flamberge is the only longer 2h). It deals heavy cut damage on swings with a 24 pierce thrust. 87 speed is slow, but with over 100 wpf you should do alright. It deals devastating damage for the price. the long tip of the model gives it some ghost reach as well. Bonus against shields is great, and the unbalanced stat will teach you to choose your attacks wisely. The upkeep is so low that you will never even notice you have it equipped.

Shortened Military Scythe (two handed)
I'd take this over a bastard sword any day. Loses some speed but with increased damage on both swings and thrusts. The item model is really cool and unique as well. A good cheap choice for strategus armies that need 2h weapons.

Studded War Club (two handed)
95 speed, 29 blunt swings with knockdown. It's not unbalanced so you can spam or feint to your heart's content. The thrust is weak, but like some of the 2h and polearm axes you can catch people off-guard with it. The model looks good with the recent set of Chinese style armors.

Knife (one handed)
112 speed. Nothing but another dagger will even come close to your attack speed. Athletics is needed to stay in very close range and land your attacks. It's basically a wakizashi with no upkeep (but you can't manually block). The model is very unique and looks nice sheathed on almost any body armor. The swing damage is on par with cheap 1h swords but the speed can completely lock down shielders and allow you to combo hits on people who don't block in time. The major downside is the weak thrust that you might accidentally use when spamming.

These items aren't the best at anything, but you will get more than your money's worth out of them if you use them for a while. What cheap items do you like?

Hate to burst your bubble here, but the voulge is a polearm and polearm animations are considerably shorter than those of 2h. A Danish outreaches you and half the 2h with it, I think you should be thinking more along the lines of Longsword length.

My favourites would be quarterstaff, rondel dagger and goedendag. These weapons are pretty much as effective as 15k weapons with the right build and I do not really seem them as lower tier weapons.

Oh, I didn't know the difference was that big! It still hits further than you (and your enemies) might think though, since the voulge has that spear-like part at the very top.

Agree about the quarterstaff too. Especially after the recent buff. If you can manually block and be aware of incoming horses and arrows then you can pretend to be a kung fu monk and just whap people all over with your bo staff.

When I was shielder last generation, I sometimes [usually xD] used the "Green Crescent Shield +3" , "Peltastos armor" , "Leather Boots" , "Ma il Guantlets"(this is the right name?!) , One handed Battle Axe +3" and "Nordic Huscarl's Helmet"
All together it was around 1.3k upkeep and I made around 10-30k per day ;)
Otherwise, I used a bit heavier: "Mongol Armor" , "Splinted Leather Graves over Mail" , Same weapons and Sometimes Nordic Huscarl's Helmet again or "Norman Pot Helmet over...(dunno sorry!)" and ofc the "Mail Gauntlets (if it's the right name :P)
That was it!
I hope I could improve YOUR choice and maybe you will try it ;)
For me it worked really really really great!
Greetings and good luck! ;)

The speed and coverage is really nice. I had one loomed, they are great with 6+ shield skill. Makes up for the low durability/hit points.

This is the shield I used my first generation, alongside Long Espada (but Side Sword was still king at the time).

All my items. You will see me on EU1-EU2-EU3. My rule is: total gear cost < 15k. This is inclusive of the fact that: I dont roll out with ANY empty slots, and I am always fully armoured from head to foot. I just dont need expensive things to kill you. Yes, YOU.

But dont worry. I will still kill you. Most times. Dont forget: I really am that much better than you. Have a great day.
