Title: [idea] Adding some ancient equipment
Post by: Gronth on April 07, 2013, 05:41:29 pm
Hi.

So, last times i saw, that many people like to play the hoplite build ( I hate you Knitler...). So my idea is - why not add some ancient greek hoplite items?

Many armor type that are currently available didnt exist simultaneusly in real world, or on the same continent, so its not such a big deal if you look at it from "realism" side.
For example the nordic/viking helmets were out of use for loong time, when morions appeared. You know what i mean?

The idea is to make some light/medium type armor based on some drawings from books and magazines (Ospreys maybe?). It wouldnt be the heavy armor, cause that would be riddiculous. Also, there could be few hoplite shield types (like the norman shields. same with stats, but with different colours). It wouldnt be hard to make the helmets, cause we already have barbutte, which is based on ancient Coryntian helmet.

There could also be some ancient Roman legionaire armour, with the big shield and gladius and so on. Of course there could be some heavy armour of this type (Centurion armor maybe).

The problem is, i have no such skills to make the models of them, nor i have time to learn it nowadays. But im sure that some people would be happy to see such items ingame. Thre sure is someone that can make the models too.

We already have samurais, mongols and chinese warriors runing around. Why not Greek or Roman :)?

Oh, it is this thread again...
It has been suggested over and over again, and nothing yet ingame, but feel free to keep dreaming.
Sort of around 1000 years apart from the rest of the mod

We have no ancient gear and that's good like that.

edit: kinda fail to post it in realism forums. :P

Well technically we have 1 ancient item at the moment. its the Cataphract horse. The thing is it was used in nearly same form in ancient times and in medieval times,

plus, i put the post in realism forum, cause it is about realism in some way, its not about weapon balance for sure, so its the saest place to put it :). But as the mod makers said, the game is not meant to be realistic simulator, but a fun to play game. Whats bad in 1000 years time difference? We have a fullplate western europe knights with katanas, and samurais with flamerges. Its not realistic at all, but for some people its fun to play, isnt it?

no_rules

Its not only abut hoplites :P Greeks fought with swords too. Its rather about armos than the hoplite build in particular.

Use search feature.

(click to show/hide)

Seriously though, this game's time period is roughly 1060-1550 AD.

Those are a bit outdated, so probably not a good idea. They would look a bit weird in the current battlefield. As you said there are some katana wielding knights, no need to encourage more unrealistic stuff if you'd ask me.

Maybe you can try using italian, genoese, milanese and byzantine equipment. I mean those are supposed to be the replacement of those.

By the way, cataphract horses aren't used in medieval?

If ancient Roman armour were in cRPG, I would sell my ninja gear and become one instantly.

Gronth,  the devs are quite strict with keeping a medieval theme.  also the issue of skin comes up,  as you would need to have nakid arms and legs,  which doesnt work with the different skintypes of the face.

IMO the timeline on which the items in the mods are, should be narrowed to 100 - 150 years, but with more various items. That way armour parts will match one another better.

As much as I want ancient greek armor for my hoplite character or legionary armor for my roman, I can understand peoples ideas of a limited time frame. I find the armor/weapons in this game is around 700-1500ad which is pretty big. I find we either as Ulster said, lessen the timeframe and increase variety, or what I think which is increase the time frame.

We can make a server for ancient armor and one for medieval armor, this may create a Berlin wall like the siege/battle servers for example, but at least we'll be happy.
