Title: Hyped/popular games you never really enjoyed?
Post by: Doppel on April 06, 2013, 10:34:27 pm
There are a lot of games which are considered as very good. Or popular games which are hyped by fans (for example Skyrim/CoD).

Which games don't you enjoy despite the meaning of the majority?

For me:

League of Legends
Skyrim (played it a few hours. I just can't get into it)
Any Call of Duty
Bioshock (interesting story, but the gameplay isn't very good in my opinion. At least it is better than all the stupid modern military shooters)
The Assassin's Creed franchise
Diablo III

LoL, Diablo 3, Witcher 2, Assasin's Creed, CoD, CK2, Crysis, Fallout: New Vegas, LA Noire, Portal, Gothic 3, Stronghold 3, Bioshock, Terraria, Arma II, Aion, Total War: Shogun 2

Some are really meh,... LoL is and will always be on top of all! Never have seen such a shit game before.

When we're just talking about simple enjoyment... Crysis is something I never enjoyed.

I am disappointed by Diablo 3 but I enjoyed at least the 2 playthroughs I did. There are a lot other games but very high on my list is Guild Wars 2 - so unbelievably dull and boring but press and many player love it. I will never understand why...

...and Witcher 2 is awesome. Just saying...

Miwiw, wtf :x so many awesome games in your list.

I personally don't like super meat boy, despite trying over and over (I'm in world 3). That godawful inertia, and also the game trying to shove a gamepad up your butt. I tried Starcraft 2 and didn't like it, for the same reason I don't like most so-called "strategy" games that aren't turn-based and don't have active pauses.

Guild Wars 2 I liked but stopped playing. Somehow it was too smooth and polished to really entertain. I can understand not liking Skyrim but have you tried mods before abandoning it ?

:)
They are nice games, I "liked" most of them and will never regret buying them but I still didnt "really" enjoy them. That's the topic. :D
Often there were "meh"-moments.

Dishonored, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and all similar games with shallow consoley gameplay.

Far Cry 3.  I came to the realization a few weeks back that this game was not good and that the only reason I had played it as much as I had was because of the third-party mods.  The vanilla gameplay was bland and reeked of cut content and poor design.  I mean they were even too lazy to remove the dude with the beanie and glasses from the cutscenes after having phased him out of the game.  (For those who are scratching their heads-- You were supposed to accidentally shoot and kill him during the Vaas fight but they never finished it.  Instead going with some lame, trippy, half-assed, not-even-a-real-boss-fight bullshit.)  And how does a professional product get through five patches with most of the major bugs and glitches still intact?  It isn't cRPG, no offense, it had a multi-million dollar budget and was sold as an A-list, sixty-USD title.  There is just no excuse for the gameplay bugs that it has.  None.  Bad game is bad.

All MOBA except Smite. Playing RTS with one unit and 4 screaming teen neckbeards in the team isn't my cup of tea.

PS. I could of course just list all popamole cRPGs made in the last 5-8 years, because except Witcher it's all pathetic decline of the genre, but why bother, Skyrim is the bestest roleplaying game evar, rite?

For me it was Fable. There was so much hype around that first game, around the impact you'd have on the world, and it just didn't live up to it.

Hmm, we'll besides all MOBAs besides smite I'd say minecraft, Elder scrolls online(I just don't have any hope in it), and heroes and generals.

Starcraft 2. I played the singleplayer and enjoyed it, but I played 1 game on multi and that was it. It reminded me of why I could never stand RTS's of that type. Memorising a build order and ensuring your the first to rush the enemy base within 10 mins of the game is not my idea of fun. Much prefer making it to late game.

Hah, reminds me of MOBA games.

I never liked StarCraft for this reason.

Call me a heretic but I didn't enjoy AoE II too much either, Total War was more of my thing.
Then came EUIII, and now I'm hooked to Galciv 2. Evolving, I guess.

Yeah AoE 2 has always had the same problem. I only really ever played singleplayer on it or with friends. Can't stand the MP mentality.

About DayZ and feeling "scammed", well.. It was a mod after all, wasn't it?

WarZ is more of a scam. I mean, dang.
It IS one. Clever marketing ploy and cash grab by that spineless cunt who is in charge.

World of Warcraft, tried and failed to get into it. The atmosphere never grabbed me.

Also, most Mobas really, would much rather compete against players in other ways like in DUST514 where it feels more personal, or a simple game of chess where it requires a lot of thinking. Most mobas just seem too weird to me, I dunno why =(

Well, i place some value on the story of a game and i am disappointed quite fast, if it has some major flaws.

One example was Fallout 3.
The intro in the Vault was great until to the point, when i have found out that my father had left me back, because he wanted to help some strangers at the outside. Great i will grow old an die in this bunker.
But as loyal child i have decided to flee and to find him (i have no clue why, he has left me behind.)
After serveral months (and a lot of side quests)  i still ask barkeepers "Have you recently seen on older man?" and finally i have found him and i still don´t no why i was looking for him.
Anyway, a quick jump to the ending, which was horrible as well.
We have killed the bad guys, but we had to stop the machine or a lot of innocents will die. The problem, the controll room was already contaminated  and when we try to stop the process, one of us will die.
Haa, no problem since i have a mutant as companion, who is immune to nuclear radiation, he could press the buttons and none has to die.
And then he told me "It is your fate to die here, i will not help you." Great. Luckily there was another companion.  (The whole thing was fixed by a dlc, and then you could survive the ending.)

The Fallout: New Veags was a way better storywise. Someone wants to kill you, you survive and track them down and find some leads to a conspiracy. This has worked great for me.

Bioshock was a bit different.
I have really liked Systemshock and have hoped that Bioshock will be something similar with a different setting and some improvements.
In the end i have got a different setting but the rest was a dumbed-down copy of Systemshock with less features.

Bioshock:Infinite on the other hand was much better. Sure, it is even more a simple shooter as Bioshock, but it has a quite interesting story and it does not try to be a Systemshock.

WoW didn't seem good, the mmo genre was too boring at that point, after playing a lot of Dark age of Camelot and shadowbane, etc.
pretty much every mmo like Lord of the rings, warhammer online were overhyped. they are all the same shit.
for some reason I played Vanguard for a while I think.

Lotro was fun allthough i nev got past level 20 or something, i could walk around theplace for hours even just farming tobacco and standing randomly smoking, lots of rp aswell but my english isnt that good, i never played mmo's to reach endgame(takes far too long) i think my highest char in WoW was 30! Which took atleast hal a year at the time.

Fable series
The new Xcom - sorta liked it, never really felt connected to the game thou.
Fallout 3 - Thank god I pirated it at first. Get GOTY or dont get this game at all. It crashed every 10 minutes. The first version of the game that came out. In GOTY atleast most of the patching sorted it out. But it still crashed every 1 hour or so. You could clearly see they learned a thing or 2 when New Vegas came out(different devs I know, but still). Game crashed every 2 hours for me. But now that was playable and I had fun.
Morrowind- God I tried, I really tried, not a game I like at all
Diablo III - Fcking DRM which utterly destoyed any chance of this game having a moddingcommunity. Which was basically half of the reason why  DII was so successful for so many years. All for the sake of the online marketplace that nobody even gave a single fuck about. Played it trough once and online really wasnt as fun for me as it was cut out to be. Also the skilltree was seriuslly lacking compared to D2. And theres no way to fix this cause suprise suprise DRM destoys mods. So the games value isnt going up now either.
LoL - I know(well) 3 people atleast who play this. I dont get why? Also im 100% sure that those guys are virgins for life. LoL-s community mainly consists of virgins....

I played Victoria 2, not the first one.

Actually I prefer EU3 because geopolitics are much more complex when you have hundreds of independant nations. Victoria, due to the context, feels very blockey and choosing a starting country usually means choosing between roflstomping and being roflstomped.

Dota, Warcraft/Starcraft, Assassin's Creed, Crysis, CoH, Warhammer, Diablo, Call of Duty, World of Tanks etc.

O crap I forgot about Cossacks. Used to LAN it with my Dad. It was a brilliant game and you could have some seriously nice battles even then. Must download that sometime.

My favourite was the one ridiculously big ship that you could bombard places with. The cannon cannister mechanics were always amusing as well. Fire one shot of cannister and watch half that unit vaporise.

Fallout 3 when I first got it I couldn't even play on my computer. It got to the menu screen, but when you hit 'new game' it just froze. So had to play it on my dad's pc . It was a very common problem as well for quite a long time. New Vegas I torrented and tried but didn't really get into it.

Any MOBA game, Dead Island, All COD games after Modern Warfare 2, Skyrim is good although I couldnt get really into it like Oblivion, Diablo 3 was fucking terrible.  Path of Exile did a better job at being Diablo 3 then Diablo 3.

Star-Wars: The Old Republic (The pvp made my small dick soft), Bio-shock only had me playing it for the story as well, the game play was boring and clunky, Battlefield 3 (I loved the idea of the game, but it always felt like it was unfinished to me.  Everything always seemed delayed.) and lastly Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (Love Ghost Recon, but I never heard anything about this game after release, which is usually a bad thing so I didn't bother buying it sadly)
