A complete mess in what way? I've been playing it just fine!

Edit:

Looked at the discussions. I haven't had many of those issues so I guess I'm lucky.

Mind you some of the 'bugs' are a bit daft. Some guy complained the trees were too big when in fact previously he had been playing a mod which made trees smaller. That's not a bug  :|

Other people are complaining that they hardly changed anything...which is kind of a dumb thing to say as it is essentially a re-release.

Some of the bugs are legit though. But at least the devs seem to be keen on addressing the issue. It isn't even at full release yet and they've started a couple of threads to compile bug reports, I can only assume so that they can fix things. It certainly isn't a mess though and lots of people have multi working and stuff. There's always some it won't work for.

Also the multi syncing issues are probably not helped by literally every multi-game trying to play 4vs4. I have yet to see a 2vs2 game or any other type. Also not helped by the mix of people playing. In the game I'm currently in there's 2 people with 500 ping, 2 with 50 and one with about 200.

Edit Edit: Yeah I just played an entire multi game 4vs4 with hardly an issue. A bit of lag but to be expected with 4vs4.

I could not care less for the improvements they made, I'm just exicted that there might be a more active MP community for AOE II again.

The MP is region locked so I can currently only see games in asia and there are tons. So I imagine in Europe there must be even more. The main issue I have with AoE multiplayer is the need for build orders and to rush. It seems every game I've played is who can rush the castle age, build a castle next to the town centre and then insta-win. I wish more games were a bit more relaxed so they made it to late game. I have yet to see someone reach imperial age. I think they sorely need to add a peace option. So for example you could set the first 30 mins of the game as forced peace.

lol, HD remake, this and that, charging good $ again for a game released.

And there is no "no-rush" Implemented?

 :)

Nope...a fatal flaw! You just have to hope you don't get into a game with some douchebags who are intent on finishing every game they play within 10 mins.

As much as I adore AoE II, I'm not paying fucking 17€ for a HD remake.

You start off with villagers you can send into a towncenter if attacked, no-rush is in most strategy games a horrible feature purely implemented to let people focus 100% on the aspect of an economy and in no way try to defend themselves.

It's a good feature IF you can train an army while in no rush time.

I believe in Stronghold Crusader, you can't, while in let's say.. Rise of Nations (much more interesting game than AoE II), you could train and get an army going. So you can smash an enemy who was stupid enough not to defend himself.

no rush games are very boring and destroys pretty much all the balance. its good to not mess with balance if these games are ranked.

anyway just got the 4 pack with some friends. does seem laggy and unfinished tho.

No "move&attack" button
Still can't select more than 20 units at once
Only HD, extended unit cap & new resource icons  :?
As much as I adore AoE II, I'm not paying fucking 17€ for a HD remake.

In all fairness I saw someone comment that the original still sells in walmart for $10. So paying $17 for one that will actually work probably isn't too outrageous.

1. You can select 40 Troops at once :D
2. Yes this game has some bugs (delay)
3. I bought it with friends for like 15€ and i still think it is it worth (simplay because of more multiplayer activity)
4. Maybe they going to make a new age of empires when they see that there is a huge demand
5. Tomorrow is the official release
6. Sry for opening a new thread did nit see the other one (AGE HD deserves two threads :P)

game is kind of a rip really, currently a bit laggy/buggy. and somethings like UI and keybinds should have been updated imo, more important than graphics.

still enjoying it because im a big aoe2 fan but it is still a bit of a joke, since its in worse shape than FE mod.

Not sure what ur talking about no rush, u have a town center that can defend itself fine with a few villagers in it up until the castle age. Anyways I got it because I played AoE2 but not the expansion, and since it is moddable thru steam workshop.

yeah i got a few cool mods already.

but I see people asking for refund and I don't blame them, game cant even handle 3v3 and is in a horrible state imo.

im rank 861, altho im better than average I think its bugged. my nick is jupsto if anyone wants to play

ok I am rank 76 atm

I originally thought it must be bugged because Ive played people who are much better than me but then I checked this site

aoe2stats.com

So i had a recorded game of one of the guys who thrashed me, I look him up and his is rank 1 lol.

This release got me back into aoe2 but I got to rank global rank 50 and then realised I wasn't actually pro, I was still a noob but all the good players play on voobly.

voobly is actually a much better service once you get it set up, less likely to lag etc. graphics are identicle, only thing HD has is better water textures. also has much more players than steam overall.

voobly is where entire the competitive scene is, just had a 50 thousand dollar tournement, not bad for such an old game. voobly isn't perfect I don't work for them honestly, its just that its free and WAY better than HD which was a complete rip off in hindsight.

I'm getting raped in Steam version. Why would i go to voobly? And also got da Forgotten expansion on Steam. Damn rushing hax players

there is a new player lobby in voobly and more players overall, but yeah I guess steam has more new players so I guess stick to it. it is more likely to lag and disconnect than voobly, but voobly is a bit of hassle to set up.

there is alot to learn in aoe2 to get good in multiplayer, economy is everything in aoe2, and it makes the game alot more complex than starcraft or C&C. (aoe2 random map anyway)

if you want to get good quickly I recommend focusing on your darkage, you need to practise it vs AI until you can do it properly. otherwise you will be at a big disadvantage vs players who know how to dark age properly (lure boars etc.).

Age of Empires 2 was the first real game i ever played/bought. I've played it on and off for over 15 years. It's impossible for me to improve lol. Mostly because rushing isn't my style but also because i prefer to focus on defense.

I agree with part of what you said heskey, taking the game less seriously is probably more fun. I played team games with my 2 brothers over christmas, one who had just started, and less serious noob games are generally more fun.

but alot of what you said about competitive simply isnt true. but fuck it

All i meant was there are like half a dozen set 'strategies that work' and little room for variation at the top level. Certain rushes of certain units at certain times, certain army compositions, set tactics, etc. And although crpg is quite forgiving in that a min-maxer can be killed by a troll build, competitive strategy games in my experience are far less forgiving. (eg. the guy who mines stone for lolz in the dark age to build troll-walls will not be able to compete with the min-maxer economically)

Then again i owe my decent economy skills on this game to early attempts at playing this game competitively, which although tedious, mean that when i play for fun i can boom an economy in my sleep.

This. I suck but watching great players like Viper and Ilumiknight their strategies are almost always the same although different versions of them depending on the map/opposition.

relevant

theres some truth what your saying, at top level if they really want to win they stick to tried and tested strategies. problem is game has been being played competitively for over a decade. people have had plenty of time to figure out the absolute best strategies for each civ matchup.

must have been way more fun back when people were still figuring it out and coming up with new strats. but i disagree that pro aoe2 is not interesting, i have seen some truly amazing games - there is still alot of adaptive stratergy to be witnessed.

This series I think is all entertaining, the 2nd game has about 100 monks and was quite hilarious.

the only time I find pro aoe2 boring is water maps, they are pretty much always played exactly the same unless sometime sneaks a landing.
