first of all, you dont have to join a clan to be able to play. it just makes it easier.
you probably got accepted and removed from the roster last minute (you have to be in the teamspeak channel for the role call, if you aren't there, you are removed from the roster)
if you are not accepted you are automatically spectator

Also, in a strat battle you cant spawn with your own equipment. You can only spawn with items that the attacker/defender you are fighting for has in his inventory. So dont be confused when you may choose out of 300 armors and weapons you did not actually buy on the crpg site.

after being accepted, check the "briefing" you can enter via looking at the battle/roster page. there you find information about when where and if you have to join ts

It isn't technically mandatory, but generally big battles do a role call somewhere, and generally those that aren't in the TS/Vent/mumble channel specified get removed in the last half hour.
You could also have been removed if you are low level or if someone else was perceived to have been a better choice. Being sub-level 30 for an important strat battle could get you removed for a better option unless you are well-known to be a good player or something.
