Title: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: okiN on March 08, 2013, 09:56:52 pm

Alpha gameplay video up. Looking pretty slick, definitely one to keep an eye on.

Their kickstarter is over and done with long since, but they still have a preorder option for the kickstarter price (25% off), so something to consider if this wins you over.

Okay. To me that looks incredibly cool. I am really looking forward to this game. This is starting to look good for the kickstarter cRPGs. Both Alpha videos have been extremely promising.

Thanks for sharing okiN!

Two days until release. I never played any Shadowrun titles, but I think this game looks pretty promising - a bit like the original Fallout games (gameplay-wise). I'm gonna wait until there are some reviews though. Probably...

I am still not convinced. I've watched every bit of footage I could find. It looks remarkably well made but those animations... Jesus, those look boring, lame, slow and... just "ugh".

I mean when I am playing an Orc, I wanna see him rip enemies to piece with brute force and not just bitchslap them once... It's just... the combat presentation is just sad and... well... boring. That's really holding me back right now...

It's like what? 1 or 2 more days till release?

I've had this game on my wishlist for a while, pretty excited

It's also coming out on ios, and now that BG got removed from the App Store, this may be the only hardcore serious rpg on mobile

Playing it at the moment. I'm loving it. Graphically it's damn pretty. Animations are perhaps the only fault there. Sounds assets are great, which make for a great atmosphere.

And so far I'm loving the story. One hour in, anyway.

Is there a save function? i have found only autosaves at some checkpoints.

Played it for 3 hours now. Didn't notice the time pass.

My main problem with the game is the lack of a save system. Currently it relies on checkpoints, although, I haven't had to redo anything yet.

Otherwise, I really like the atmosphere, story, sound assets and graphics. The only downside is the animations which are a tad clunky. The UI is easy to navigate and understand, and the combat is easy to understand and fluid. Haven't encountered any bugs.

Playing a Dwarf Mage called Steely Greg  Mainly spend my time nuking stuff and healing, but there are some buff/debuff spells as well. But I prefer the ones that combine debuffs with damage.

Looking forward to the user created content, and I hope they do well enough to make a Shadowrun 2. That fixes the few remaining issues in the original.

So far, based on my first impressions, I'd give the game a 8.5/10, dragged down primarily due to lack of manual saving.

Awesome game, highly recommend it atm. Only played 6 hours, but got a really good impression of it. I like the writing and setting, and some choices you can make on the way. Combat seems decent atm. It appears to be quite linear though

About the save game system, I can see it getting annoying if you have a crash or you make a mistake part way through an area, but I find it quite refreshing to have to live with the consequences and I'm having to make choices as I go. It seems like a concious decision by the devs and I like it atm. In games like Fallout I'll be hitting F5 all the time and making separate saves so I can go back if I don't like an outcome. I'm sure it will make for some tense moments as the difficulty ramps up, as it seems to be atm

I agree with the consequences part. I do put more thought in to what I say, without manual saving.

So, I haven't played the original Shadowrun, but the optional missions bug me.

So, I haven't played the original Shadowrun, but the optional missions bug me.

The optional missions give karma, however, if you're playing an 'evil' guy, you won't accept those missions, right? Because you don't give a shit about a hobo or the friend of a dead woman.
If you're being a dick, can you still get those karma without being nice?

Think of it less as being nice and more of being reward driven. Sure a hobo may not be able to pay you, but they are often incredibly helpful information-wise. You aren't doing selfless acts of kindness, just very selfish acts that happen to be beneficial to others.

Also, I am 6 hours in and am really liking the story. The writing is well done and I really like the setting. I even find myself envisioning dialogue in my head like when you read a book, something that never, ever, happens from video games for me. It may also be worth mentioning I have never played a shadowrun game before.

Cons however seem to be the animations, as others have mentioned, the linearity of the story, and the fact that you are likely going to have to wait a while for the user generated content. I would estimate the campaign included with the game is maybe 12 hours? Probably less but I am being hopeful, so once you finish with that you are just going to have to put it aside until the mods start coming about.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and that whole checkpoint thing is great for the reasons Grumbs mentioned and isn't usually too bad as it is basically after each "quest" or whatever so it generally isn't too unreasonable to play checkpoint to checkpoint. However, it blows if you ever want to leave your game without leaving it open. I wanted to play for a little while before going to work and ended up having to quit mid mission which forced me to restart the mission when I got home from work, needless to say that was a total bitch. I have also missed the little thing saying it autosaved and have played way longer than I planned waiting for a checkpoint so I could go to bed. :(

Short Version: It has its flaws but is an enjoyable game for a cheap price with potential for endless user created campaigns giving you great bang for your buck. If you are extra cautious wait to see how much good user created content comes about before buying it.

Man I should review games for a living.  8-)

I've got 20 hours logged and didn't finish yet, though it feels like i'm getting to the end. I did take my time though

The quality seems to decline a little later on, noticed a bunch of incorrect sentences in a mission, and I got some glitches in one particular map. It might be a bit rushed towards the end. Had to restart once because the game wouldn't exit the enemy's turn, and some events failed to trigger on the same map after restart, but eventually it worked out.

Still well worth the money, and I got it cheaper after selling trading cards and TF2 hats

Yea, my main flaws would be the linearity of the story and the lack of meaningful decision.
It happens too often that you give an specific line in a dialogue and when you happen to play it again, you notice that the answer of the npc is always the same...

Animations, already said that but I can deal with those since it has a lot of atmosphere otherwise.

My Rigger is progressing slowly tho. I am taking my time with the game.  :D

my main issuses are still the saving system and that the combat mode does not end until you leave the map.
the later reveals bad scripting, when a event is triggerd only if the whole squad has reached a specific point. to be more specific, during a mission i was trapped in a dead alley, and the new path came only available as i have moved all of my runners to the previous room.

and the ui, notably the loadout screen is a bit comfortless. i have missed filter options for consumables.

the story so far, well it has started quite interesting, but then ...

So I was right at the end and completed it now, ended at 21 hours played.

All in all its a pretty solid game and the length is probably about right

Nice little RPG, happy to have backed it. It'll be interesting to see what level of player-made content turns up.

So I started playing Shadowrun Dragonfall a few days back for the first time even though I bought it on release. Man, it's WAY better than Returns. Like WAY better. WAAAAY.

Anyway, just noticed that they put together a new Kickstarter for Shadowrun: Hong Kong. If it's as good as Dragonfall, I'm fucking sold. If it's better then wow.

My only gripe is still the dullish character customization, otherwise it's improved in every aspect.

Hong Kong got fully funded pretty much immediately, so don't feel pressured to donate, though it's probably cheaper now than it will be on release. I'm still considering.
