Title: Dwarf fortress
Post by: Umbra on February 21, 2013, 11:07:08 pm
Quite possibly the most detailed and complex game ever made, with a legendary learning curve (http://img.myconfinedspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/casual-hardcore-and-dwarf-fortress-gamers.jpg), a marvelous community, and meticulous attention to even the most minute of details. The world you play in and all its characters, monsters and history is completely randomly generated promising an endless supply of fun.

Probably the best way to motivate a new player to try Dwarf fortress would be reading one of the, now legendary, stories that this game can produce: The story that made me try it is  the story of Boatmurdered (http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/Introduction/), a long read but well worth it. For something shorter and more ilustrated try  Bronzemurder  (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.31:Stories/Bronzemurder). You can also read a story (http://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/152z21/well_time_for_some_fun/) i wrote of a massive goblin siege and the battle that followed, backed with a multitude of screenshots. (OP and continued in the top comment)

If you are intrigued with what you have read check:  Lazy newb pack  (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0) (note - download the advanced version) for an easy install and start. (Also, there are a lot of useful tools included, among them a couple of costum graphic sets, if you cant handle the ASCII)
Also the extensive wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Main_Page) is something you will be using heavily. Almost everything in the game is explained in detail there and this will be your most usefull tool. If you got a question, search it here first.
Dwarf foretress has one of the best and most helpful communites i have encountered so far, so you can also use the forum (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php) or  reddit  (http://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/) for any advice/questions.
Or ask here, ill be happy to answer.

An excelent game, but it has my personal met peve in it. You can't shut it down quickly. You can't alt+f4 out, you can't just click the X in the upper right corner. To close the game window, you have to navigate through some menues. Don't get me wrong, it's an excelent game. It's just that 1 part of it that has always... erked me.

DFhack my friend, it comes with the Lazy newb pack and solves A LOT of my own pet peve-s. The name might be DF"hack" but it is not a cheat tool if you use it just for issues. Its just a console window, and if you type: "die" at any point it immediately shuts everything down.

Other things i use it for:
- removing temperature calculations for improving FPS
- fixing human and elven diplomats
- cleaning excess blood and items
- enforcing the population cap
- exploratory digging designations
- vein digging designations
- automated production for less micromanagment
- fixing military draft unhappy thoughts

and more!

I cant imagine playing without it  :D

Oh, the fun potential, I still remember my first fun spiral, I did not even know what the hell was happening and suddenly 80% of my dwarves were dead.

Also regarding the wiki, it took me 4-5 days just to finish the "basic" tutorial back when I started...

But yeah, very good game, especially with a couple of visual mods, dwarf therapist and a couple other tools

Tried it and decided I do not have the time atm to commit to this. Not helped by the fact I was learning from a youtube vid that wouldn't buffer fast enough (bad internet). Deffo seems like one of those games that is worth learning though.

The story of Boatmurdered is the best read I've had in years.

I was going to get back into this, but I'm now holding off playing until this incredibly annoying bug (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=5991) is addressed.

Yep happens sometimes, escpecialy on wall edges. Denostructing and constructing again fixes it.

Unfortunately, if there are stairs or ramps nearby, deconstructing and reconstructing doesn't always fix the problem. I was hit with the bug twice, and in both situations the only workarounds were very tedious (removing the nearby stairs/ramps, or designating the wall as a low-traffic zone).

I love this game but I have not played it in so long as it does require alot of time to really 'get into' a game, sometimes I do feel like downloading it and spending half a day playing it but I imagine I have probably forgotten how to do half of the stuff lol. Having your fortress attacked by a Giant Ass monster is funny, even though I'm sure by Ass it meant like a Donkey or whatever but I decided it was funnier to imagine a giant ass squashing all my dwarves.

DF in a nutshell :

"And so, she built a bridge so that she could dig, so that she'd have coal, so that she could make an axe, so that she'd have wood, so that she could make barrels, so that she could drink..."

Well, learnt the basics, the game just gets more fun the more you learn it. My first tantrum spiral was really fun, some forgotten beast came and fucked all my 3 squads up with it's web, damn markdorfs just charged it. Then, a female clothier went berserk, punched her husbands brain in with her first blow killing him on the spot, then she went on to strangle her kid to death with a chokehold, a war dog charged in afterwards, but she splattered the poor dogs brain all over the place. She then wen't out in the hallway, killing a pet bird, a puppy and another dorf child with her bare fists. (un)luckily a miner came by and dug a pick trough her skull.

You marksdwarves charged it because they either: didnt have ammo to put in their quiver, didnt have a quiver, equipment wasnt put on replace clothing.

The military screen is a total bitch, it takes some time to learn. What i suggest is going on the uniforms tab (n), go to archer uniform, add cloaks and press r (replace clothing). After you have done that station your marksdwarves so you can see if they are wearing the correct set of clothing and if they all have crossbows and bolts in their quivers. If everything checks out, you are good to go.

Also, when building fortifications bear in mind that the marksdwarves use the Archery skill and NOT the marksdwarf skill to shoot trought them, you need acomplished or higher to shoot trough fortifications. You should train them in an archery range, the wiki is good on archery ranges, you should have no problem learning to build one.

All them dorfs had quivers and bolts, but well, new fortress on the go. Losing is really fun aslong as you can see civilian dorfs go on a killing rampage  :)

My New Fortress Bronzeluck is going alot better, got a really sweet defensive system up, with utilizeses several drawbridges, empty moats filled with traps and a zone to trap attackers, where my markdorfs can shoot them from fortifications. Just slaughtered 16 gobs and a giant Olm with only 1 loss. A memorial will be put up in my grand dining hall, never forget, never forgive! Now I'm waiting for next years elvish caravan, nothing better then to just kill those pesky hippies and take all their stuff.

My new big project is a tower that will be accessed only from inside, with fortifications so I can shoot all those pesky invaders from another position.

A flying forgotten beast entered some cavern that doesn't have access to my fortress, now it's deceased

Facing off siege after siege of Goblin invaders. Had one really tough one with 2 filled pages of goblins/beasts and a named demon as their leader, some sickass fox turned into human shape with regeneration and fucked up combat prowess. Got killed eventuelly and now the gobs don't have any leader. All the other invaders got killed by traps and raising/lowering bridges into my pit of traps. Alot of human and dwarfen caravans have died during the sieges, leaving behind big amounts of loot for me.
