Title: Foot armor for horsemen
Post by: Ronin on February 20, 2013, 10:30:42 am
Does foot armor do wonders when you're riding a horse? I'm thinking of getting a +3 plated boots. But... does it even worth it? I have nothing else to spend the looms really.
Or should I go with a cheaper-lighter foot armor? Like Sarranid Mail Boots?

It does no wonders, but it certainly matters more than on the ground as riding a horse lifts your feet to be a target for many slashings and pikings, not to mention ranged.

I had loomed Mail Boots for riding when I was cav.

Put it this way: Every time someone attacks your horse, you have a chance to get hit aswell. Most likely you're going to get hit to the legs.

loom yourself a popular but rare boot like splinted greaves w spurs or rus splinted greaves.  you can get any plate boot for those with a good profit.

Or just loom the item you want to use (that's my suggestion)

Foot armor is the most important for cavalry, as has been mentioned already your feet are hanging down the side of the horse, they're the prime target for getting hit.

That's why my favorite armor is the heraldic mail with surcoat, has 18 leg armor by default, it's (IMO) the best horseman's armor.

I would also use mail chausses (27 base armor) , but I switched to mail boots (35 base armor) a few months ago and I seem to have noticed I take more damage.  It could also be that I loomed my heraldic mail so it's now 23 base leg armor, so I've netted 10 more leg armor total in my new setup.

I am actually going to buy it, not loom it myself. Looming for profit won't be available to me :)

Actually. Hmm I was asking should I wear one of the heaviest leg armors possible or just an avarage leg armor? Is heaviest, always better? For the leg part I mean.

Thanks for heraldic armor suggestion crazycracka, but I think heraldic armors look so bad with my GK flag. So I have gotten a lordly mamluke mail myself :P

It does wonders, but you may not need to loom boots just yet, not until you have a good high leg armor body piece.

I have everything I need besides head armor. I think looming a head armor won't be a good option. 1 shot to head already kills me when I wear a 40-45 helmet, so I guess looming it won't make a difference.

loomed 55 base armor helmets save your life.  sporting a +3 great helmet myself and its great.

Nothing feels better than getting hit to the head from a jarid and walking away with it

Decent leg armor is even more important for a horseman than it is for melee. I usually one hit kill at least one or two cav players or so every week because they decided to try lancing in Sarranid Guard Armor with Wrapping Boots or something like that and got hit in the leg by my spear as they charged past me.

Having heavy armor on horse back is not as use full as having it as an inf.
Because of the speed bonus that works against you as well as for you.

Also we cav tend to have no or low ath, combine that with the heavy weight is not good when you are dehorsed.
The only exception is leg armour, I would go for one of the splinted boots.

That said I do wear one of the heavier armours (+3 sarinid gaurd armor) becouse I can afford to and can save my live every once in a while.

Maybe pure cav have no athletics, I max mine however because I want to be useful in strategus sieges or when I get dehorsed.  Heraldic mail with surcoat is pretty light armor when it comes to weight, and it has 18 leg armor, highly highly recommend using that armor as cavalry.  You sarranid guard armor is not very good for cavalry, it's almost 15 weight, and has only 11 leg armor by default.  My heraldic mail with surcoat is cheaper, 2 less weight, and has 7 more leg armor.

I wanted something that would be over 50 armour, light enough in weight and fits the GK dress code.
With good leg armour (boots)  you bump the leg armour up anyway.
But that's food for thought Cracka.

And oh Torben, I meant heavier compared to surcoats over mail or any of the other lower tier armours cav use or fit the GK list.

Mamluke mail or Eastern Lammellar Jacket are nice, superior Leg armor, cheach unkeep and low weight
