Title: Heraldry in cRPG

This thread is inspired by this post by Dave here:

I figured it could be some great fun to see how clans ended up with the banners they use to this day. So I figured I'd tell you a little bit about the heraldry of the Ninja Clan, the all-time favourite *wink*. So, in the dawn of cRPG when the Clan was formed we obviously chose the best banner to represent a merry band of small men wearing black pyjamas:

The bird is still one of the official symbols of the Clan and it has featured in most of what's been created since. When I joined I was just starting out with toying around with GIMP and found it to be fun to make banners. So I made one that looked horrible. The clan used it for about a week until I started to dislike it so much I had to try again. Here it is:

I disliked it mainly because the ninja looked terrible and the letters looked out of place. Though, the combination of black and grey I liked and I liked the concept of the bird still featuring. However, in general it was horrible. Now, to explain the weaboo letters I hope it is self-evident to everyone that they stand for Ninja(or Shinobi). As I said, in a week I decided it was time to make a better banner that used a different symbol for the Clan.

At first I experiment with using the katana as a symbol and I just couldn't think of a way to make it look good, so eventually I chose the all-time favourite Ninja weapon, the shuriken. This came with the added bonus of looking a little like other Japanese symbols of the time period, see here (http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/7936/kamow.jpg). So after a little dabbling, trying to get the colours right I ended up with the banner we use today:

Note the bird sitting inside the shuriken in the center and the japanese letters. I tried to make it remind people of a feudal japanese banner without directly copying one. Since then, the symbols have featured in a lot of Ninja promotional material:

I guess that's about it. There still my signature to show. But thanks for reading and PLEASE, post your own clans historical stuff. I like reading this stuff. :)

PS.
I made a banner to friend who never had the time to put it to use, so if anyone wants it, feel free to ask me. It looks like this:

Seriously, I want more!

Though I understand if there aren't any clans around with the history to have gone through this kind of thing.
