In short, I think it would be fun, interesting, and balanced to allow people to use the 1h modes of 2h weapons with the malus (e.g. morningstar, longsword, etc.) and the unidirectional hoplite mode for certain polearms (e.g. war spear, shortened spear, battle fork) without the use of a shield.
The restriction to such use only with a shield feels like an arbitrary and artificial barrier that limits player choice.
Especially for polearms, I think this change will deepen gameplay. Although Chivalry is (in my opinion) a vastly inferior game to Warband, one thing that I found admirably done in it were some of the polearm stab animations where you would hold the weapon with two hands, thrust, and release one hand so you could get the breadth of your shoulders into it and increase the length of your attack. This also reflects actual use as grip switching and such one handed, lengthening stabs are attested to in numerous historical sources (historicity is not a concern of mine, though it is, apparently, to developers). Because hoplite mode only has one attack and mode switching interrupts blocking and attacking, such a change would increase polearm versatility without strengthening polearms absolutely, that is, it is not as if you are simply giving polearms a longer stab but only the option to do so with serious drawbacks.
The change for 2h weapons in 1h mode is mostly in the name of variety. There is a serious dearth of slow, long 1h (the ACS at 95 speed and 105 length being the longest and one of the slowest, only the military hammer is slower) and it's just damn fun to use a goedendag or morningstar in 1h mode despite how weak they are. Adjusting for the malus and being successful is extremely gratifying and should not be restricted to shielders.
And just to reiterate, it really doesn't make any kind of sense for one to be able to wield a morningstar or spear in one hand while holding a shield with the other, but suddenly become unable to without the shield.

Agreed...especially considering the fact (even though I'd wager nobody does it). If I pick up a bastard sword and have a shield, I'm getting the malus attached, but at least I'm still using my 1h proficiency. If my shield breaks, I'm completely fucked as I have no 2h proficiency. Would be nice to be able to hit "x" (default) and switch back to 1h mode. You can do this already with the fighting axe, and I think a couple other "bastard" weapons, but not with most that I know of.
Also adding this to hoplite polearms would be awesome as well. Stabbing a spear with a shield is much preferred than without if a horse is bearing down on me, I want that extra reach at the cost of speed.

Please?

The fact that this doesn't exist in the game is the main reason none of my gens have been Morningstar cavalry. As soon as my shield breaks, my damage output is penalized because I switch to 1 2h WPF instead of 111+ 1h WPF. It's totally ball-breaking, man.
EDIT: Fixed a few typos.

If this were implemented I may be inclined to owe those who have endeavored to make this real my personal heroes. Greatest idea through the annals of mankind, perhaps stretching further than even our eldest ancestors, beyond that of even the unwritten story of the cosmos. No one ever has dared to dream this big. Dear Lord, I aspire to live in a world with decoupled 2h and polearm. Please do this!

Same for me :P I'd be more willing to use a morningstar if I knew that I wasn't boned as soon as my shield breaks.

im up for pressing x three times :0

I accidentally voted no in the poll!
I like this idea though! I would totally change my vote to yes if I know how!

The polearm one is especially important. It's always struck me as odd that you need a shield to access the longer polearm thrust.

Running around using a War Spear in "hoplite mode" without a shield is going to look hilarious, I'm for it 100%

I am a onehander now, an I tried using bastard swords with shield. When my shield breaks and it uses twohanded mode, my weapon becomes actually faster. You guys are exaggerating a bit.
Although I'd like to see this implemented, I think bastard swords are better as onehand-twohand/polearms. Having to press x 3 times would destroy the point of using them for hoplites. You can really try swinging those kind of weapons with both hands, it becomes actually stronger and faster even with no wpf in twohanded mode.
For those weapons that doesn't have "x button" on them, well... simply why not. But please leave bastard swords alone.

+1, suggested a few times, would be very nice to have. I have always wanted a HBS 1h/2h hybrid

Poll closing in two days. Bump for visibility.

Kind of along the same line, but can you make it so that polearms that can be used on horseback can be used as hoplites on the ground. Bec, Glaive, military scythe, I'm guessing there are others.

I don't know why this isn't in the game. It seems like those weps are way too stupid slow in 1h mode to be useful.
