Title: Wasteland 2 (Beta is live!)
Post by: okiN on February 09, 2013, 02:51:33 pm
So you guys probably heard about their kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2) ages back, doesn't seem to be a thread about it though. Here's one now, since they've released a bit of early gameplay video:

It looks like Fallout 1, 2 and Fallout Tactics combined.

Vimeo derped the original link, the devs have the video on youtube now so I've embedded it in the first post.

Brian Fargo and co. more than delivers so far, this one just ticks all the right boxes.. Narrative approach (with even more text than Fallout 2 it would seem and seemingly held in the same clever, dry style), tactical turn-based team combat, old school 2d isometric view, customization emphasis, 'real' guns, rangers, post-apocalyptic wasteland, Fallout-ish interface, limited voice acting meaning richer and much deeper dialogue + npc interaction, Mark Morgan soundtrack etc. etc. love it.

I'm trying not to get too hype.

Edit: another article http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/08/01/a-day-with-wasteland-2/

It sounds promising, but of course the question is whether they can really deliver.

They're really running the risk of overhyping their game(s). They sound too good to be true.

Here's another gameplay demo. It seems promising.

The beta is live! Backers are being brought into the testing process. Haven't tried it yet, I think I might hold off entirely until the game is finished, but I'd be interested in hearing impressions.

I've indulged myself in a few sneak peaks, so based on that and general opinions I've read on the internet, it seems good.

Really looking forward to the release.

Oh wait, I forgot, I don't get the beta anyway since I just went with the default backer level. Well that settles that question, anyway.

How'd they have a professional studio working on this game and a budget of at least 3 million dollars and still end up with a game looking like it was made in 2002 by two fresh out of college indie game developers?

By prioritizing something else entirely than graphics, which is what everyone wanted from them?

You don't need to prioritize graphics to not have a crappy looking game.

Graphics-wise it definitely looks like its made 10+ years ago, love it. Controls seem to be very thought through, easy to manage multiple characters. My first crew died early though, need a quick death run to actually know what i need to skill >_>

Action points and skill points seems to be the most important factors. Skills easily outweigh attributes in importance if you look at the modifiers. I wouldn't settle for less than 3 skill points per level up per character, and for 8-10 AP per turn. Initiative can be very effective too for a combat character, enabling them not only to shoot first but to get more actual turns than an opponent, per round.

They've made it so all skills and attributes feel important and have a role. Spreading points out is not wasted as even a few can be useful, and they are all great in their own right. The game's emphasis on direct skill interaction with the game world (reminiscent of Ultima 7 and to my understanding its later inspiration Divinity that I have not yet played) makes it very enjoyable having a variety of characters tagging along and contributing to the skill pool.

I tried going solo and dual characters as I've done the last few times I've replayed BG, Fallout and Planescape, and though I will probably do it eventually in Wasteland they've made it so you miss out on a lot with less than 3+ characters. But the C.L.A.S.S.I.C character creation system is also inspiring, as is the character customization, and I highly enjoyed creating a full ranger squad.

I'm only a few days into the game (though a lot of hours my weekend seems to have evaporated), but so far the controls are great, the interface is great, the combat is great, the story, dialogue, characters, atmosphere and art design are great, graphics are great, audio is great. I had high expectations, but the game has so far amply delivered. It's the right crew, the right franchise, the right game type, the right genre.

Getting into the game again, took me a while to get into the feel for it but now that ive started its reaaallly enjoyable. Sweet taste of fallout 2, with more tactical combat and tons of choices to make. IMO probably the best game released this year, it actually lives up to its promises and delivers more.

Finally beat it, great game. Lovely parts like
(click to show/hide)

will be remembered. GOTY release is only a couple of months away aswell with new engine, so better graphics and some new mechanics like VATS-ish body parts targetting, etc. My cro-magnon, meathead, steroid-brute melee beatdown squad was suprisingly effective and only got better throughout the game. 3 Melee dudes, 1 for each melee category, and 1 guy with max intelligence, and minimum strength named Goebbels to make up for the lack of brains my muscles had. Definitely reccomending a brawler, monster fucking dps at max brawling.

If you havent played this game yet, its definitely worth picking up, especially with fallout 4 coming out, some post apocalypse hype, even though they arent similar in gameplay. Around 50 hours of gameplay to keep you busy.
