lets say that there's bolt flying straightly to your face and my question is:
 is there  difference between this http://c-rpg.net/img/items/large/itm_open_sallet_coif.png (http://c-rpg.net/img/items/large/itm_open_sallet_coif.png) and this one http://c-rpg.net/img/items/large/itm_visored_sallet_coif.png (http://c-rpg.net/img/items/large/itm_visored_sallet_coif.png) in this sad moment?

Chances that you survive or notice a difference, is kinda low. Bolts are piercing which causes a good damage to heavy armor.

Concerning helmets I would go by the looks and upkeep.

edit: No, the plate on the face is just for the looks :)
