Title: So what's the best 1h?

So I took a lot into consideration, and used a lot of your opinions, but I'm gonna stick between the Italian Sword, Nordic War Sword, and Nordic Champion's Sword. Cost isn't an issue, and I like the style of these three.
I also added a poll option.

Depends on the build.

I prefer the Simple Sword and the Italian Sword. At +3 the Simple Sword has almost the exact same stats as a base Italian Sword for 1/6 (?) the repair costs while the Italian Sword is just flat-out well rounded enough to be good in almost every situation, especially when heirloomed.

If you're going for lower PS (ie 12), though, and you want to stick with swords, go for the Scimitar, Grosse Messer or Italian Falchion. Straight swords just can't "cut it" at those lower damage values.

EDIT: If you want style points get a Side Sword. Bitches love Side Swords.

all these swords have their strengths,I personally prefer the italian sword,long enough,fast and  good damage thrust\swing;I m now using a Langes Messer also this excellent weapon

Iron War Axe, I'm on gen 4 for my 1h and the Iron War Axe is the only one I'm aware of that can stun a Longsword. Oh yea, it also breaks shields and has 40dmg at +3

Didn't see the hammer bit^^

I'll side with these guys on the Italian sword and simple sword.  Also the shashishka or however its spelled is a good, long sword

Long Espada. It's long, fast, and does lots of damage. Good for cav, too.

I go with the side sword, of course, because its sexy. It also has good thrust, though that's broken.

The Italian Sword is also sexy, and the best well-rounded sword IMO.

I actually use the Niuweidao : very fast (101) and powerfull (32) , long enough (88). But no pierce damage.
In his category you can use :
Elite scimitar : long reach, fast and powerfull (but no pierce dmg), I used it for many gens.
Grosse Messer and Langes Messer are good too.
Liuyedao : cheaper and faster. Perfect for low STR build.
Military Cleaver is powerfull
Italian sword : Good overall balance, probably my next choice.


Champion nordic is probably the best one, if you have enough wpf to be fast enough.

For 1h cav : Arabian cav sword, Knightly arming sword, Shashka

Axes : broad one : good but expansive
fighting axe : long reach and 2h weapon
1h war axe : my favorite axe, cheap and good enough.

For swords
I'd recomment a
Nordic champ: Hight cut damage (more than average i guess :o);Quite long after swords like long espada,arabian cav,shashka,((heavy)bastard sword,longsword,goedendag) if used with shield and the speed isn't that bad it's quite good in my opinion the stab is the only weakness but stabbing and 1h are a topic for itself

Italian Falchion?

70 length is a bitch, but with base 34 cut and 101 speed, it chews through stuff like no other.

PLUS it's got a stab unlike lwudewadiwao and company, which is a huge bonus for me.

The one handed weapons i would recommend using:

Nordic champion sword
Broad one handed battle axe
Steel pick
Warhammer (Dat knockdown)
Military hammer (dat range and knockdown)

Outside of hammers and picks, probably the liuyedao, scimitar, or military cleaver. A lot of the expensive 1hs aren't that worth it when there are weapons just as effective for 4k-5k less..

I would honestly pick a sword without stab. As great as it is to have the stab with pierce damage, most of the time it glances and leaves you wide open for an attack. So where those swords do have other great abilities such as there reach and good cut damage, the stab on 1h is useless imo.

Imo I would go with a sword that is 3 directional such as the military cleaver, elite scimitar and even though you don't want to use any thing else but a sword I would use axes, hammers as well. From those categories I would use the Broad one handed battle axe (only downside is it is kinda short, but has high cut damage and great against shields) or the military hammer (good damage, good speed, decent length, both blunt and pierce damage)

If you really are in love with cut, a military cleaver will do the job real good.

Actually anything with "military" is good. The military pick has a very good range for a pierce weapon, and the military hammer has the same advantage over other hammers.

Scimitars and lieyueiueidadoisaoidueoiduieuyadoeuyaiudyiaueoiudyoiauyeoiuydoiueayoiueyoiduaiudiuyideyaos are always a very solid choice and probably are the easiest 1h to use.

Stabby swords ain't my thing ever since the turn rate nerf so I would avoid them at all costs, especially considering that stabless weapons have superior stats. Many people like the langes messer for the good speed and range but yeah an elite scimitar is gay but simply better.

I never used the axes much. They do a lot of damage but the bad range and speed make them only good in experienced hands and inferior to the military cleaver except when it comes to bashing other shields. As a more original choice, the fighting axe is quite nice because of its incredibly misleading reach yet with decent other stats.

Broad Short Sword - Very fast, decent length, good swing/stab - great for agi focus build
Regular Espada - 1h awlpike stab. Use the swing to interrupt, then stabby stab mcstab in the face. Very fast weapon also

I rotate between those 2 swords and I always carry my iberian mace.

Also use a knightly heater shield and my build is 15 st and 21 agi.

My favourite is the Military cleaver, followed by the Nordic Champion Sword. But there are plenty of very viable options

I really think that the Knightly Arming Sword isn't a bad choice. Admittedly, it is more stab-reliant which is bad since the turn nerf, and even before...but I find myself able to stab people effectively. More importantly, it's able to stab cav effectively. I almost never use a shield, and am currently 1h hero-mode, so the length surely helps to kill both inf and cav alike. In addition to the above, the model is quite a bit slimmer than the nordic swords, much in the same way the scimitars and picks are. Tough to see, very easy to get a quick leftswing feint to an overhead cut, which is likely to hit their head given the 1h animations.

Yes never forget the KAS, its like NCS but with 1 less cut and 3 more pierce, really worth it if you like to pull of some thrusts.

Think of it this way.

Champion Sword sacrifices speed for a bit of length and an extra pip of damage over the lower tier, still bad stab.. (War Sword)
Italian Sword sacrifices some of its cut damage for an added stab attack at a good speed.
Nordic Sword sacrifices pierce damage for more cut, at a decent speed. (still weaker than champion in raw damage)

Now, classify all that.

Champ Sword-> More beneficial as a Cavalry Weapon. (akin to Shashka and the straight Arab swords)
Italian Sword-> A reliable weapon both cutting as stabbing.
Nordic war Sword-> Cutting weapon at good speed, less reliable stab. (Though with 6 powerstrike and good footwork should not glance.)

Before I was the spear nerd I am today, I was a decent 1h. Not the greatest, but I held my own. I learned quickly how freaking awesome your weapon selection is as a 1h, you have something for any situation(if you bring it with you). What i did then, was mentally classify the majority of the weapons into what they could be used for.

For these three in specific, I will quickly rule out the champion sword if you are infantry. Why? The CUT damage around 30-32 is not going to move much anyways. Maybe it will feel like it because you will have an unconscious mental bias when trying it out, but its not that big.  The extra length is also not always a good thing, you don't want to get caught up on teammates.

Leaving with now the Nordic War Sword and the Italian Sword. This part however, is just up to preference on your end. If you used both weapons to their strengths, the Italian will SLIGHTLY come out on top due to the much higher stab score. However, if you are part of the "1h stab blows and is for losers crowd," you won't be stabbing anyways, so you might as well stack the cut damage in your favor. The reach difference is negligible.

Remember once on my STF alt i had 0 PS and used a +0 Niuweidao. Managed to kill some light, medium-light armored infantry that got near me with it.

It's badass. Plus it looks sweat as well.

NCS, bought one once, never sold it again.
Arabian cav sword is also worth mentioning, slightly slower but slighty more damage and reach.


Sidenote, lenght of the NCS is good, with decent agi (21) you can outrange even 2handers if you play it right ^^

These. I would say the scimitar is the best 1h overall but because of its insane speed and because its curved. It hits sooner than you would expect from a normal sword. It is a gay weapon to use though.

And yes I am in love with the military cleaver. I proposed to it 2 weeks ago. It said yes. Invitations are in the mail.

Tough choice.  If 1h stabs were in better shape I'd probably vote Italian, but I got best results from Nordic Champ - the speed rating is plenty.  1H stabs are still viable, you just gotta use your imagination to where the hit's going to connect.  Espada's are still nice, but if you're gonna be left swinging all day with the occasion overhead / right swing, get yourself a good swingding.


Seriously consider the Niuwedao/Liuyedao though.  Excellent swords.  102 speed pre-heirloomed, 88 length, great cut damage.

92 length is fine with me. Its long enough. It makes up for any problems you might have with its length with the fact that you're wielding a badass weapon that hits like a truck.

This. Always get people asking me how I do so much damage with it and telling me I hit like a truck. Rarely glances, doesn't get stunned often (heavy as some 2hers), and the reach is deceiving. I often out-reach 2h and poles with the right swing, people never expect it. And it's plenty fast, that left swing.  :wink:

EDIT: And to pick up one the other statement Taser said before, yes the Elite Scim is probably the best/easiest 1h. Crazy (ghost) reach, good damage, and extremely fast. I've been tempted time and time again to use it, but I just love this cleaver and I couldn't live with myself for using such a baddie weapon. It's a great weapon, but I can't respect any shielder who uses it.  :twisted:

I used a +3 military cleaver and loved it for the last couple gens, but with the upcoming turn speed limit being set by weapon weight/length, I traded for a +3 Grosse Messer. Seems to offer to best blend of turn speed, damage, and reach.

36 cut, 23 thrust, 100 speed, 85 reach. With 7 ath, I'm hoping 85 reach is OK. 92 was plenty on the cleaver.

My favorite two 1H's are the Broad Battle Axe and Warhammer, but if I had to choose a sword, i'd probably go with the Nordic War Sword or Italian. The Nordic Champ is too long for IMO. I tend to TW and get the sword stuck on castle walls and trees constantly.

Another fun 1h sword to use is the Grosse Messer. I had a +3 one for a short while and the 36 cut kicks ass.

Whatever you do, just avoid the Long Espada.

I'm in love with the pasta cutter(Italian falchion) atm. I even got a MW, making it a very fast and deadly weapon. I buffed it the most with turn rate change, so I can have even more fun with it.

I know you said no to anything but swords but think of the Iberian fun. Once you get used to the short range it is a great weapon. When fully loomed it holds up well even against heavy weapon stuns. Has a nice knock down. Pair it with an axe to crack shields and you are ready for fun.

I used to run with the iberian, one handed battle axe and simple sword and my round shield all loomed out.

Iberian for close work and damage to anything heavy armored
battle axe to crack the shield nuts
simple sword for speed and need for speed dueling situations.

1h swords don't have enough killing power against your typical juiced up 2h hero with loomed armor that gets past 55-60, except maybe military cleaver. Needa use an axe, pick or mace that has stopping power.

Altho if you ask for the most balanced one hand i would go with either the Nordic champion sword or Knightly arming sword

As I have said in the original post, I am not interested in hammers, picks, or axes.
And I also stated that I liked a specific style, out of that style I asked the community to choose what was best in their opinion.

I went Espada back in the day when everyone was a tin can or an archer.  I figured I needed a lot of pierce for cans and a quick slash for archers.  Then I stopped playing for a long time but found it hard to give up.  As much as I love thrusting things into people, I definitely noticed the glance effect.  I still use it in battle, but now use Broad battle axe in siege.  I know you don't give a damn about non-swords, but I do!  Short is good there, and you can switch to pierce, as I never got over my fear of tincans.  Also its good for smashing doors.
