Title: Is it worth retiring your alts or not?
Post by: Pizza_Cat_Speedy_Cerviche on January 08, 2013, 02:07:45 am
I was playing on NA1 and i asked this question and it sparked up a big conversation,  it was very hard to follow so i figure maybe it was a good enough question for the forums.
So is it worth retiring your alts or not?  for loom points or what have you, i guess that is what they would only be used for? please tell me what you think.

The world has turned upside down and inside out now with the announcement of the new game. Don't listen to anyone but yourself. And if you can't hear inside, go deaf with a bang!

Depends if you have a high level main and don't want to retire him. You might as well use your main otherwise so you get the extra gen bonus on him (you level faster each time you retire for the first 12 gens or so)

If your main is going to go to 34+ then you can help fund him with alts

as i said in-game: NO, you want to retire your main over and over again so you also get the xp bonus. And you want that xp bonus because you will level waaaay faster. when you are higher generation, you will be able to level up to lvl 31 in no time, while without it, it will go as slow as before.
The other guy, who said the xp bonus wasnt important claimed that he was higher lvl because he hadnt retired that much, wich means he also needed a shitload of time to level to lvl 33 (wich he said he was), he also claimed that he was way better because of those few levels, while looms are even more important.
This guy that claimed to know everything couldnt even make a lvl 33 build that was able to properly use a great maul (a archer with a 1h could block him without even getting a stun). He claimed to be pro, but in fact he was asking a archer to learn him how to chamber (a maul!!).
excuse me for being so rude on him, but he tried to make me look like a noob in-game while he actually didnt know shit about the game and its mechanics. I dont know alot of things either, but if i dont i ask for it first, before i start brawling how much i know.

^ Agree

Don't get too caught up with levelling, retiring, getting looms and making money though. Another factor that is probably the most important is how long you spend with a build you enjoy playing, and playing at a competitive character level. If you like your build and are at lvl 30 then don't bother retiring until you really aught to (32, maybe 33 not sure). You get the same gen boost (delayed so not quite the same xp will be got) and the same looms, but you will get to play at a decent level for longer. Looms can be important, or some goal for you, but it costs you in terms of how you enjoy your playtime. It can get to be a grind if you spend a lot of time under lvl 30.

The stacking xp bonus from retiring multiple times means you should almost always level your main to retirement. Pouring your time and "retirements" into a single character is much more beneficial than spreading out across multiple characters.

Alts provide a refreshing change of character class or an escape from your famous/infamous main character's reputation. They aren't "meant" to be retired over and over like main characters.

Don't listen to the high levels saying looms are everything. They just don't want you to know.

Now seriously it takes a fuckload of time to get enough looms so they have an impact. To a completely new player I would say the moment you find a good level 30 build that you are comfortable playing with, stop retiring.

Best advice that's been given here, same way I did it. The gen bonus is also freaking nothing, it's barely an increase and those people speaking as if it's worth anything are insane. Retiring alts is worth it, but I'd only do it if I'd gotten tired of the alts build, if you enjoy playing it then why grind from 1 to 30 in order to play it again? Also, looms themselves aren't all that great unless you're stacking a lot of 3+s (or going cav/ranged), 3+ body armor ain't that big a deal, 3+ body armor and 3+ glove armor is.

I'm also divided but I would say my mind thinks this is best, as you've seen, it differs from person to person;

Anyway, personally I would (and did to an extent) level your main character in a build that you most wish to play so far as to hit the extra generation experience cap while acquiring the heirlooms that are more specific to the class, so for example, bows due to the requirement to have power draw in a build or your higher strength armour etc. (I do not know for certain if that is still a requirement, I assume it is but I haven't retired for nearly a year and a half.)

Once you have done that, you should have your "staple build" and most of your equipment (15 generations, therefore 15 looms I believe, I never hit the exp cap!) which means that you'll have enough for 5 +3 pieces of equipment.
Then you really have a choice, do you continue your main build, with that equipment through past for a few more generations to utilise your generation bonus to "quickly" acquire some more looms to bolster your armoury or do you allow that character to live on into old age and utilise your generation experience bonus for quicker levels.

If you do continue on building your character, that's where retiring your alts comes in, retiring those really is strongly for when you have your main in a position that you never want to revert back, you've invested too much time into making it. That's the position that I am personally in, I didn't max out my retirement bonus however and I've hit level 34, I traded for the extra loom points and I use an alt to "grind" extra points if I want them although he is only generation 3 (14 generations with 22 heirloom points).

Anyway, there's my personal "best method" given a best case scenario anyway.

I ve settled in a class for my main, and im not gonna retire on it anymore. Therefore, if i wanna retire, i use my alts

I level up my main because it's good for strat battles. And I retire my alts to get some looms. But now, I've enough loomed stuffs, I don't need alts anymore.

Matter of taste. If I were a new player with my current experience (weird, uh?) and ignore the new game anouncment I would do it this way:

1. Retire main a couple of times, sell each loompoint and get a propper trading started.
2. Get the most important +3 looms (1 set or what) by a mix of trading and keeping some loompoints from retirement.
3. Get main high level.
4. Play with alts aimed for lvl 31 and have fun, don't retire with them (you won't need no money or looms because of trading).

Never retire your main. Only retire your alts makes more sense. Gear up your main with your alts. /thread

I retired my alt 3 times already. I didnt play him during the last 2 months though because I simply prefer playing on my main char. I am not even sure why, because when equipment was important for Strat and the main was the only char being able to use the marketplace, it was only good to invest time on the main... but now any char is good as the other..

only difference is the way to get more xp by Strat battles...

Once I keep on playing my alt, I will surely retire him everytime I reach 31 again. LPs, you understand. :)

I've retired my alt 14 times already. Don't do it unless you're super bored when playing main.

If you are most concerned about getting heirloom points, retire your main. If you have found a playstyle and build you really enjoy and are hesitant to want to go back and grind from peasant level, try leveling an alt. If you enjoy the variety an alt provides enough to level it to 31 and would do it again, with another build or not, retire it. It really just depends on how much you play the game, and how much you enjoy it.

To rephrase: Yes, if you play a lot. However, it is going to be very tedious if the only reason you play on alts is to get heirloom points.

*Disclaimer: my main is gen 1, level 35. I have a gen 2 alt, a gen 3 alt and a gen 4 alt. I like the variety of playstyles that alts afford, and leveling up can be fun sometimes. Playing my main is the most fun, but the occasional time I do spend on my alts adds up enough eventually to make it viable to retire them.
