I've heirloomed a courser 3 times and i can tell you, your ride skill is very important, everyone that plays a lancer will tell you so.

If your worried about damage out put go 15/21 and have 7 riding. You can ride fast, pick up and horse on the field, and enjoy the speed your at.

If your not to big on armor go for lower str and higher agi.

Dont make a 18/18 build, your speed on horse back will always top your need for damage.

The faster you become, the speed will outweigh any power strike you need.

SPEED > PS ALWAYS ON HORSEBACK

Well, i disagree.

Imo speed on horseback is important, but so is damage. The difference between one-hitting an enemy and having to hit him twice is insane, as you will rarely be able to hit the same enemy twice from your horse on a big server.

I had 18/18 last gen, and that was nice, but the gys who took 2 hits were a pain in the ass.
This gen, i am going for 21/15 to try something else, then i will decide afterwards what i like the most.

I think i have a different way of playing cav, the fatc that he heirloomed his courser tells me that he spends all the time backstabbing unaware enemies, where he can simply gain insane speed and hit them in the back with a lance that 1-hits because of the insane speed bonus.

Ofc i do that too, but i use a sarranid horse because it is better at cav vs. cav and it is also better against people on foot who know you are there. Imo, it is also more fun to ride :p

As for repair costs: using a steppe horse and going on foot occasionally, i can generally afford 70-80k of equipment, including horse. If you want to use one of the more expensive horses, you'll probably need to save up a bit. Being cav aint cheap. :)

Keep rocking that x5. Tactics rule.  8-)
That, and every time i retire, i make up for the 20-40 k i lose while being level 30 and using my heraldic mail loadout. Also, my second shield adds a bit to the repair costs.

A build that has proven to be quite effective for me is 15/27.  5ps, 9riding, 3wm.  I have proven the benefits can out weigh the cost.  I would however suggest triple looming a courser and heavy lance before doing this.  This build also takes patience and precision.

I have my grind gear and my epic gear :D

Grind gear:
ragged armor
Leather boots
leather gloves
Rouncey
Heavy lance
heater shield

Easy to earn money in that one.

My better gear:
Byrnie
Nordic Huscarls helmet
Mail gauntlets
Splinted Greaves with Spurs
Sarranid Horse
Heavy lance
Heater shield
(Long hafted blade)

Lose a little money with this because im too lazy to do tactics like phaz.

Actually i have 1 mil gold, but i dont like losing money :(

When i get Champion sarranid and Champion lance, i will probably use the better equipment all the time

Ive pulled off a very effective 21/15 cav build. As has TomMyyY.

Dont listen to anyone who says you need to have very high levels of riding its simply not the case, its a luxury.

21/15 ensures that even if dismounted you are still an effective killing machine rather than some crappy sluggish whelp who cant hurt anyone with his 5 power strike.

I'm making my first lancer too, it's around level 27 right now but the plan is:

Str: 24
Ag: 15

Hp: 59
Converted: 8

PS: 8
Athletics: 5
Riding: 5
WM: 5

Polearm: 148

It's a generation 1 character, so to save up money I usually play in peasant clothes with a war axe.  Once in a while I'll spawn with a rouncey and light lance or scrounge someone else's horse and equipment off the ground, but usually I stick to fighting on foot just to try out all the polearms before I reach level 30.

Ye, listen to Casimir and Torp.

High riding is nice and all, but with 21/15 (4IF, 7PS, 3SS, 5WM/ATH/RID) you can still easily 1-hit people.

With those high AGI builds you just die so easily from one of those many things that fly through the sky.

And yes, the equipment is quite expensive, but it's allright if you can make your team win a bit on your horsie.

What does each point in riding do exactly? Besides allow you ride better mounts

Increases speed, primarily.

Anywho, decide what kind you want to be, I do suggest a STR build more then AGIL, but keep in mind that certain people (The date rape team for example, Roh' and Ruf') have proven that if used correctly, you can easily one shot people with an AGIL build on a courser, assuming of course that you are very familiar with the maps, willing to be lackluster on the maps were bringing a horse is bad, and can reliably hit the head with your lance even under great duress and at extreme angles.
