I've noticed on the website that shields give body armour. My friend and I are wondering how this works. Does the body armour apply always, does it only apply when the shield is on your back, does it apply when you are only blocking and someone somehow manages to hit you while blocking? How does the shield body armour work?

Imagine that you hold an armored baby in your hand. It has hp and body armor like your character. Steel shield - plated baby, practice shield - dirty peasant baby. And ye, shield on your back doesent add to your body amor, but it reduceces arrow damage to your back.

Shield armor does not normally affect you it is just a shield stat.
Shield armor absorbs the damage the shield is taking while blocking.
So shield with high armor and low hp = absord most of the damage of weak weapons and is (nearly) unbreakable for them, but high damage weapons punch through the armor and destroy it easily.
Shield on the back was said to reduce damage you take from arrows from behind I have no idea if that is true.

Like has been said, shield body armor is just like armor for you, it reduces damage that comes into contact with the shield. The higher the armour rating on the shield, the less damage it takes.
Usually its a trade off since high armoured shields have low hp and high hp shields have low armour. But the only time they help you with their armour rating is when they're on your back and you get hit by ranged in the exact spot your shield is then it helps reduce the damage. But that's useless since you'll never have a shield on your back.. or you shouldn't anyway.
