I was messing around with some 2H swords on a character spec'd for polearms and basically realized my best chance for having any effect is a surprise thrust when my opponent does not even realize I am halfswording until the stab connects. Anyways, I propose adding overhead attacks with either 2H or polearm animations for the following reasons:
1- No one halfswords. It deserves a buff in the form of another directional attack if only for the reason it's incredibly unpopular.
2- Mistakingly using a thrust instead of a desired overhead can be especially disastrous for halfswording because the thrust is
a) very short and can miss entirely, leaving you open to attack, and
b) prone to glance at zero and long ranges, triggering a thrust-block-stun.
c) the polearm thrust seems have a wide ghostreach area attack which can easily teamwound players near your target.
3- Halfswording already has the 2H animation for right swings. The motion for an overhead seems pretty similar so even if overheads are ahistorical (I am not a halfswording guru) the motion is at least fluid and consistent with what we have in-game.
4- To someone with no idea about how to code Mount and Blade, adding a weapon direction seems like an easy change.
I could not find a thread about halfswording with a quick use of the search function so I apologize if this has already been suggested and shot down .

Make it use 2hand WPF, and maybe I will pretend to give a shit about halfswording

Halfswording is a metaphor on how useful masturbation is.

I rolled with a half swording alt for a time, its incredibly fun and can be suprisingly effective.
Adding overhead would be a great buff to this fighting style, im all for it.

+1, have been messing around with half-swording lately and was about to make the same suggestion. Please, more buffs for half-swording.
The best thing that could happen for great swords though is that the character's grip on the hilt was made wider in both 2h and polearm mode, moving one hand closer towards the pommel. This would make them shorter in 2h mode and look like the character is wielding a historical zweihänder instead of a fantasy sword. Making the grip wider could also accommodate the top-most hand actually resting on the ricasso and not on the edge as it does now, also making the sword slightly longer (adding more reach could be another way to get more people to use half-swording instead of 2h mode).
Make it use 2hand WPF, and maybe I will pretend to give a shit about halfswording
Also, this. So many more people would use it if this was the case.

+1 for halfswording buff! Halfswording is pretty much the only almost realistic thing about two-handed swords in cRPG...

Agreed!
Would also be awesome if anyone made animations for using the sword backwards, and hitting with the hilt too..

A counter proposal:
Almost nobody half-swords because nobody takes wpf in both Two Handed and Polearms, which is what you need to switch between the two modes. The few who do seem to be polarm users who are in half-sword mode all the time. Either it should be abolished altogether, or...
Half-swording to use 2H skill, severely nerf (cut by around 10 pts) the stab damage from the swords with a secondary mode but keep or buff slightly the stab damage for half-swording. This gets rid of the lolstab which a lot of players complain about but would allow potent stabs from a half-sword, which is historically what it was used for: close up combat against an opponent in heavy armour. If it's possible (which I suspect it isn't) the half-sword overhead being discussed could even be a mortschlag doing nasty blunt damage with the sword hilt.

A counter to your counter.
If half swording is made 2h wpf. Then reduce the thrust damage significantly for normal 2h mode. In this way players choose between ultimate reach lolstab but can glance often, or super powerful short stab that glances like a polearm.
In any event, this is what I think 2h should be.
Two styles, fast slashy with range or slower heavy hits.
Revolutionize and generate more excitement to the class.
