Title: ELITE is to be kickstarted for a sequel
Post by: CrimsonPigII on November 06, 2012, 08:09:40 am
Amazing news: the original star sim game ELITE is to be kickstarted for a sequel!!!

The co-creator of Elite, David Braben, has announced that he is turning to crowd-funding site Kickstarter to get funding for a sequel to the influential game.

If it works out then its great news for the spacesim genre :)

Im a massive X universe fan and the X Rebirth is coming - so more space sims please!!
Also the x universe has a wiki which is still being used for this sandbox game: http://www.x3wiki.com/index.php/Main_Page (http://www.x3wiki.com/index.php/Main_Page)

No video, no artwork, nothing... very strange for a game that is in development for years.

Am I the only person who really liked Frontier: Elite II?

I'm hoping it'll live up to the expectations should they get it completed.

In the meantime there is always Oolite (http://www.oolite.org/)!

It's a open source remake of the original Elite and it has quite a bit of support for adding in your own ships etc. I would recommend people check it out if they're interested in seeing a slightly more modern version of the original game.

Damn i loved Frontier: Elite II too- it actually tried to replicate real physics with ship movement in space!

However X universe is now leading the way with the space sim genre and thus they have alot of catching up....

People who are backing this are hating so much on Star Citizen

Also, most of them (nearly 12000 backers) are only there to support Elite. Other big projects have many backers that previously supported other games.

On asshole level, they are comparable to M&B native community...

Meanwhile, David Braben posted 4 updates for 13 days... none of them showing anything "juicy". In last update he was talking about procedural generation technique and how awesome it is... like we're in 1983 and he's the only one doing that...

Space Engine that I've posted and many other similar projects already have procedurally generated universe and they are either open source or one man projects....

In short, bunch of nostalgic and deluded people supporting a man who has nothing to show and is most likely using Kickstarter to fund his company for few more years before it goes bankrupt.

In the end, succesful kickstarter campaing or not this is going to be a huge disappointment for everyone. That's what happens when people don't have enough information nor are willing to do some research.

To learn more about David Braben read this interview with co-author of Elite and Frontier, Ian Bell:

Not exactly the Tale of two Steves but close.

He has proven me wrong and I'm immensely happy for that. Better me being a dumbass for saying all the thing I said in this thread than this game not being made at all.

Thankfully, game does exist. Seems like super early strange. I hope he did work on this during past two months to be able to show something to his backers. If that's the case, end product will be awesome :)

Another space sim on the go, 2014. is going to be such an awesome year :D
