Yeah they're pretty much the same thing nowadays. Catchers used to just wear the mask over the standard baseball cap and batters would hit them on the head on accident so they switched to hockey helmets.

Yeah, looks more like a baseball or lacrosse helmet than a football helmet because of the tongue. Doesn't matter, I already named my Stf Jackie Robinson complete with black armor set and studded warclub.

Why does it start only in 600 AD and only with the Spangenhelm? It's a bit of a misleading graph. For example the Barbute was a deliberate attempt at recreating greek Corinthian type helmets, it didn't "evolve" from a pot helmet.

It was an attempt at creating a helmet that was protective enough without a visor, no idea if they actually cared for the Corinthian helmets. Probably not
