Title: Why so much disrespect?

I've been playing this game for a long time now, and I've seen some things, and I've seen some stuff and I wouldn't recommend it.

Early in my cRPG career, people seemed helpful and more docile than hostile, I met many great players back when cRPG only had one server, and you waited 30 minutes for your stats and gear to update.  The community was small, and everyone seemed to enjoy playing the game for the sole purpose of having a good time.  As months passed I eventually found myself preoccupied with a clan, right around the time the North American servers started popping up.  The leader of the clan was known for having poor spelling and grammar, and for saying silly and absurd things.  Eventually, a poor reputation started and just seemed to stick, and I don't think I've lost it even to this day.

Here's a pretty picture to keep you interested!

A few months passed from then and I formed a small clan with a few friends from the past group.  Originally, we asked to be forgiven by the community for the atrocities our last clan leader had caused, and while some people seemed to forgive and forget, a fair number of people continued to hold a grudge against those who had nothing to do with past disagreements.  Team killing, trolling, false accusations and a number of issues started to rise and eventually my clan split in two.  I'm not going to tell the story for the six thousandth time but right around this point in time is when the community of cRPG turns into a slum of shit and the word respect slowly transforms into hate.

Everyone started to take the damn game way too serious, personal threats, attacks and leaks began to flood our once small community.  It was a fucking plague, and we've yet to shake it.  People got hacked, personal information was released, people were permanently banned, corruption spread to the admins of the servers.  I can't play without seeing mass butt hurt around every corner.

Lately, I've noticed that wearing the Dracul tag brings joy (all of the people I've gotten to play this game with) yet it's also a burden, as people still hold a grudge for things that happened over a year ago and I can't play anywhere without being treated as a miscreant from hell.  What the fuck is wrong with you people?  Whatever happened to playing games because they were fun?  How many of you play this for the purpose of continuing feuds when you don't even enjoy the game itself?

I guess this essay comes down to me saying this:  We need to calm the fuck down and remember that we're playing a game, people take this strategus shit way too seriously and I think they forget that the reason they started playing this game in the first place was to have fun, not make enemies over the internet.

I've been playing this mod regularly (As in, actually paying attention, being involved in diplomacy/clan shit, etc) for like...8 months, I don't know. Not that long. But I've never really seen anyone talk shit to Dracul folks. Hell, I've barely even seen Dracul folks running around. I'm in battle a lot. I'm a full-time student that's currently out of a job, so I am in the battle server all the damn time. Haven't really seen anyone be rude to you. That doesn't mean it's not happening, I'm not calling you a liar; I just don't see what medium they use to do this. Maybe steam, forum PMs, TS, something else?

I like Dracul and I've had no problems with any of your members. I like the ones I've met and have no reason to think ill of you guys. Keep playing and have fun.

One of the biggest reasons that people get mad at this game is that they forget there's a mute function, not to mention we're playing a mod that is progressively getting shit on more and more over time. People get defensive about their time investment in what others have already seen as a waste of time, so tensions are high to preserve what little they have left. Take that fabulous wolf for instance. It has a large slice of Watermelon, but if you take away 9/10ths of that, I guarantee it's going to fight you a lot harder now that it only has 10% of what it had in the beginning and still wants to cherish it.

I guess should emphasize that while I'm merely using Dracul as an example, there's a lot of hate going around for the entire community and I think it's slowly driving this great mod to something less than great.

EDIT:  Also, you probably have seen us but didn't notice.  We spend a lot of time on alts and we like smaller servers with less ranged cav.

If people take stuff too personal, they shouldnt play a game after all. People hate it to die, to lose and start to insult. If you cannot take that, don't play online.

You will never meet an online community without any of these "features". It's hard to work against it, to stop any kind of this behaviour. People just tend to rage, and sadly most express themselves in the chat then, instead of just raging irl... :P

It has nothing to do with my own personal issues, I'm simply using them as an example.  But it's really becoming an issue when it forces a number of people out of the community and the game itself.

I'm an Artyem fan because he is good peoples AND a Spookfan because he was - though being a shitbag most times - part of what made this community. Together with characters like Farmer_Nate and Balton they were the spices in this soup of crap and even occasionally entertaining.

TL;DR: Get the fuck off Arty's lawn!

I got tired of all the negativity and hate a long time ago.
I've done my best to be nice to others. Personally and gameplay wise.

I've suggested many things that have now been implemented. Where is the gratitude? Where is the respect?
I can't be bothered to give my point of view on things in the forums just to receive a lot of negative feedback.

I've tried to be somewhat "honourable" on the battlefield as well, which is not an easy task being a lancer.
There have been attempts to lessen the hatred on lancers. Most known for that work is Torben, who is also a lancer.

My point is that I (and all other lancers) will always be "easy mode lancer cav my old friends with zero skill".
That goes for archers as well, except that they are called my old friendchers.

Apparently my old friends (read ranged and cav) have less skill. Straight men play 2H.
I'm neither gay or homophobic but the amount of gay and my old friend talk in this game is disturbing.
Sometimes I wonder to myself if there is a valid reason for this. Maybe this community is full of gays who just won't admit it?

Either way, I don't play this game because I like to read about how gay something is.
Be creative and write something else for f**k sake and stop the rascism against other classes already.

Oldtime player disclaimer....

In the past with no looms and whatnot ... the people that played crpg was genuine warnerds.. wanting to "reeneact" medieval warfare..

people cooped easily.. there were no mutlipliers... and everyone felt it was an obligation to help out newbies.

The chat would be filled with ideas on how to defend some hill... lure enemies into a trap... and more.. now it is just 4chan.. esp NA servers...

It was a good time to be archer... mounted on a horse.. with a a longbow/warbow + 2x arrows + a great bardice... wearing heavy armor (vaegir Elite) with no penalty :)

The grind attracteded more players and minmaxing... good thing that more players started playing.. but  it brought along some unwanted sideeffects.. like archerynerfs.. :) no more mounted longbows with great bardice and heavy armor... in the name of balance...:(

So what is your solution, Artyem?  If you really want to contribute to the community, and I'm truly sincere about this, would you criticize everyone when you say you, or would you solve your interpersonal problems with whom you see fit?  Because I don't buy into your "essay".  You're not being persecuted by anyone anymore outside of your resisting accountability for acting silly "over a year ago".  I think the majority of people who agree with you are people, like you, who garnered unwanted attention because they decided to verbally assault or argue with someone over something trivial.  I recognize that there's irony in me saying this (why would I reply to this thread if I believe this?) but I'm replying to what you said because I do care about this community on a human level.  And I think you do, too, and that's why you are posting here.

This is one of the reasons i dont play strat, =D to muth to think on, its just a game. But when u play a game that u need to play but u dont want to in that moment, the game becomes your life.

Exempel: i was playing Travian for a year and when i stoped playing it i felt so fucking free ;)

Allow me to once again state the meaning of this thread:

People take this game, waaaayyy too seriously and it winds up making our community look like it's composed of a bunch of angry twelve year olds.  Go, take a look at the diplomacy thread and you'll see what I mean.

All it takes is a little reading comprehension, look past the blatant examples and read between the lines.


EDIT:

I play strategus because it lets me and my friends cooperate and run our tiny (yet very clean and well maintained) village, it's fun and we wouldn't play it if we didn't think it was.  I care about winning, but if I lose I really don't give a shit.  The fun isn't in the victory, the fun is in the battle that it took to get there.

Well.. I have been insulted and stuff just cause I have killed someone. I was playing on EU level 20 server, I didn't say anything in chat just playing.. I had most kills and score in our team, and our team was winning all the time. So some guy just started insulting me, he called me hacker idiot, pussy, cocksucker etc... Then he started saying stuff like "If I had weapon_X I would fucking own you", "If I was on my mine I would fucking own you noob"... I jsut kept saying "Okay." and didn't get provoked by him, so he decided to vote kick me. Oh boys how huge the surprise was when the vote actually passed with 57% voting yes. I think there's someting wrong with most of the people in here.

i've been guilty of ~a troll too far~ and gettin' really mad at videogames in the past, shit talking, all that. if i pissed someone off or hurt your feelings i'm sorry. i think i've mellowed a bit over the past year or so, though.

that aside though, the nature of this game makes people mad. it requires a LOT of time to become even somewhat proficient (relative to normal games for non-spergs [we are all spergs here, face it]), hours and hours for "basic" melee fighting, and dozens more to become "good". and that amount of time investment makes you care, it's just how it is. i'd be surprised if anyone reading this right now had less than 150 hours in warband. i'm glad i don't have the thing on steam, so i can't see precisely how many days of my life have been thrown away on this game.  the other thing is that it's very competitive, even moreso than a shooter or whatever. there's not really any "ambush" except for cav (nerf cav), if you die it's probably because you screwed up somehow.

in a game like this, people are gonna get mad, and strat (diplomacy, backstabbing, clan infighting) exacerbates it. also, since the community is so small, it's not an xbox live situation where the guy you called every name in the book goes away, he's gonna be there in the next thousand games, and on the forums too.

tldr, the way this game works makes people mad, also it's an internet game, and you know how the internet is. just let the shit-talking and the rage roll off you. it'd be nice if everyone would take it a little easier, but whatever - it's just a game, no need to get too worked up about the people playing it.

You were kicked because of leeching. And threatening others with ban polls isn't helping either.

I assume you are talking about the kick poll when I was in the barn? This isn't the case I was refering to above.. However now when you brought this out, how possibly could I be leeching? I killed 3 people that round, and I was last one of us alive against 2 enemies. I won the round for my team, how is that leeching?

Who did I threaten with ban polls? I told the 2 guys who were teamkilling at spawn to stop it or I would forum report them, and so they did stop.

I agree with your statement but find your statement pretty ironic when you try to pretend like I left Dracul on bad terms when I didn't. I feel like you tried to lie about me and defame me on the forums because of your war against KUTT in strat. I think that's taking it too far.

Overall I agree. I'm guilty of negative things and shit talk myself, although I feel its been retaliatory most times. When someone from a clan says something snippy to me because they're mad about getting owned in siege, I can't help but popping back quick with the shit talk.
