Title: Found a build, need a weapon.
Post by: vh0x on October 13, 2012, 01:26:59 am
Hey I'm new to the game and had a question about a weapon.  If anyone has seen the movie Ironclad (on Netflix, suggest ya watch it), I'm building a guy based off the Templar.

I found this build that everyone said was pretty good in another post (sorry forgot poster's name):

Quote
24/15
(8 skills converted to attribute)

8IF
8PS
5ATH
2WM

all wpf in 2h.

You get 75 hp (which is a lot) and enought damage output to be able to two hits almost everyone. And 5ath is enough for a good footwork, really.

Going for a more agi oriented build is good in battle to flank people or not getting flanked or overwhelmed, otherwise strengh is usualy better.

edit: And i forgot, as long as you're using a weapon faster than 90 (which is 90% of 2handed) getting more than 100 effective wpf is useless. You swing faster with more ATH not more WPF.

I am only level 7 and had two questions:

1. What is a good sword around my level that will last me for a bit.  I'd like to save up some gold for better armor and weapons later.

2. Once I get near max level what is a good overall 2Her for Speed, Damage, and Length?

Thanks for the help!

Hi nice to see a new name.. For starting out I wouldn't recommend that build at all. I would recommend a 21/18 build, 4 IF, 7 PS, 6 ATH, 6 WM, 150 WPF.

The Templar in Ironclad was a proficient duelist, and I guarantee if you went against a high Agi build you wouldn't be able to get a hit in, nor be fast enough to counteract his footwork.

You will feel really slow in your selected build, but by all means try it. Again, I would recommend a balanced build so that you can decide for yourself if you need more speed or want to hit harder.

1. Heavy Bastard Sword, Great Sword, Bastard sword.

2. Danish greatsword and German greatsword are the most popular, however the regular Greatsword is good as well. It depends what you feel comfortable with.

I'm sure I can find a guide to see the basics about what weapon skills actually do... I will find that out later.

But if ATH is weapon speed why do I need so much WM?

ATH governs your running speed. Try hovering your mouse over the stats on your character page. The hover text has a helpful short description for each stat.

Oh, ok.  I can already see that being slow has it's disadvantages because people are running around me like crazy.  On that build that  tizzango mentioned do I need to convert anything?

Also how important is armor?  I see everything has a weight, I'm guessing it slows you and weapon speed down.  I'd like to be able to at least wear some type of chainmail (Templar look).  Is that possible without gimping speed too much?

Wearing mail is very possible, and you can still be quite fast with it. Armor is what primarily gives you survivability in a fight, so you definitely want some, but you guessed right in it making you slower. The heaviest armors render you quite slow in both movement speed and weapon speed, as great weight also has a Weapon Proficiency Point penalty.

I'm pretty sure you need to convert some points in that build, and I recommend this calculator for checking such things and planning your builds: http://infinitum.dyndns.org/crpg/calc.htm
It might not be completely up to date, but the character builder is accurate, except for minor variations in WPF.

You'll need to convert skills to attributes 4 times.. What I would do if I were you is level this way:

- Aim for balancing your build as you level -

- 9 STR and 9 AGI
- 3 Points in PS, WM, ATH
- 12 STR and 12AGI
- 4 Points in PS, WM, ATH
-15 STR and 15 AGI
- 5 Points in etc etc.
- 18 STR and 18 AGI
- 6 Points in etc etc.
- 21 STR and 18 AGI
- 7 in PS, 6 in WM and ATH

When you reach level 30 convert your remaining Attribute into Skill points and put 4 into iron flesh.

With this build you can pack a punch, and take a hit. You can afford to make mistakes and at the same time hit hard when the opponent makes them. Great build to start out.

Armour is important depending on who you are talking to. Personally, I aim for having 50ish body armour. However, anything in the range of 35-50 is pretty standard. Remember hand armour counts as body armour.

Templar look? White surcoat over mail, mail gauntlets, and whatever boots/helmet you like.  That should give you (I think, cba checking) 42 body armour? Which is sufficient.

You need anymore help just post.

Thanks for the info!

I've already pumped IF to 4 cause I was following the other build.

Do you recommend pumping WM last now?

I'm at 12 Str, 4 Agility.

Was going to convert 4 right away to get higher agility and then balance at 12/12.  Then bump ATH.

Is head armor a must? Rather go without.

Do whatever you feel like, I just think playing with a somewhat balanced build whilst levelling is better! :D

I would recommend PS then ATH then WM.

Head armour isn't a must, however, one hit to the head and you'll die- rendering your body armour useless.

No no no no no.

6 Wm is way too much if you go for 21/18 do  7IF 7PS 6ATH 3WM (130 2h/polearm).
When you are playing as a melee you will want agility to get more ATH a not more WPF, you get something like +1% damage for each WM point and even less swing speed. You swing faster using athletics (increase your movement speed and therefore your swing speed and damage).

And i would recommend the 24/15 build to start, it's easier to play than 21/18 and probably more effective.
Unless you can perfectly use your speed to increase your damage don't go for more than 18 agility, wait until you get used to foot working.

For the weapon do what tizzango said.

Edit: I am the poster of op's build ^^

I've not seen the film that you're basing your character off of, but don't count out the Goedendag. It's got sufficient length, uses blunt damage type which is more effective against heavily armoured foes, and it has knockdown, which is very useful in both solo fights and teamfights.

24/15 will be a blast.  First real sword is the Bastard Sword, but a strong, balanced starter is the shortened military scythe.  Its gonna be slow, but after swinging it around, the sword will feel like lightning.

Might try putting the 2 points into shield instead of WM.  WM gets better as you put more points into it, so 2 WM will make the difference between about 113 wpf, and 125 wpf.  I forget the formula, but its very insignificant.  If you do 2 Shield points, you can carry a shield that will stand up to arrows, giving you a tactical edge against ranged.  You won't be able to charge them in an open field, but having the option to use it to gain ground and move to cover is nice.  With a bastard / longsword, you can swing it in 1h mode as well so you dont need to redraw your weapon when you catch an archer.

Try a Skip the Fun character.  You can spec him to 24/15, and respec them all the time now.  Try out 27/12, 21/18, and 18/21.   From there, even try 18/18 and 21/15 with full Weaponmaster.  You really won't ruin your build unless you put points into power draw and horse archery.  A lot of people play with little or no Ironflesh, but it really helps a lot.

Do you prefer slashing over stabbing? If you are more of a slasher go for the Danish Great Sword, Sword od War or the Highland Claymore, if you are a stabby person go for the German Greatsword, the Great Sword is probably one of the best all-round swords, imo.

The people above me have already give great advice on builds, I hope this helped choosing a weapon with it.  :)

Lot of good info here, thanks for all the replies.

Made it to level 12ish last night and it is getting better every level. First 10 levels in,  couldn't even kill anyone. Bought a Heavy Bastard Sword and some Mail armor. Actually got a few kills in some rounds.

One last question and I will stop bugging everyone. What is the preferred attack/block setup?

I've been using mouse movement for both. I do good on attacking but really bad on blocking. I can't seem to block faster then they swing.

Based on chat I think most people prefer the keyboard setup. I have tried it once or twice, and I just can't do it. I love the mouse directions because it makes the mouse feel like my hand is going into the game and I feel the swings and blocks. Gets more adrenaline going for me thus making the game feel more intense/fun.

Most players use the mouse for both attacking and blocking.

Yeah, use the mouse.  Practice makes ... better, haha.  Glad you're having fun.
