Title: A song of arrow and knee, the untold story of strat 5
Post by: Torben on October 01, 2012, 01:43:18 am
Imagine a strat round that,  up to some point,  is guided by a few people knowing a story to it,  and telling it by puppet mastering players and factions,  giving them missions and tasks only known to them,  distributing some sort of completion points for every mastered task, and in return gaining more freedom for every completion point they gain up to the point where they are completely free in their actions,  which would at some point lead to an almost normal and known strat,  however even then with a twist,  and a final goal unknown up to the point it is in reach.

I know a very cool ending to the story,  and a few awesome surprises for the way there.  If this idea would be an option for the devs,  I would proceed in making a competition for the story that lies beyond the beginning of strat five,  and from where on the Puppet masters would go on in telling it.  Also,  the winner would himself have the option to become a puppet master himself.

Sounds kinda cool, but the puppet masters would need to be completely unbiased against players and factions. Finding an unbiased puppet master may be a bit tricky as well as finding someone with time for that.

Actually,  if the story is decided on,  pulling the strings would probably be less work than many faction leaders have atm with managing their peps.

unbiased:  well, i cant imagine someone who would dedicate time into this,  would be so infantile as to deceive the cause.  Furthermore,  the story and actions would be decided by the 4 or five story masters,  so no one could really favor their old faction or whatever.

I am sure there are a few people mature enough for this,  who would also like to take control.

It could be so very epic...  would be too sad to see it not happen.

This sounds interesting but also complicated to make it function properly, it has to be thought out good.. Im wonding how you want small factions be able to complete goals? And i imagine with goals you mean " raid that village" or "escort this caravan to ..."?

in my head,  that is all taken care of

lonesome strat wolf would get message:
- you spot count fuckalot with the remains of his scattered army.  he proposes to join forces and regain his lost village lesbos.  help him regain the village and you will be rewarded.

- or:  hold off the attack of king this n that heroically with your peasant army to delay they march on your beloved country.  you will be rewarded thisnthat

furthermore:  small warbands wont change the story if they act on their own,  so they could do their shit freely.

No for strat 5, yes for a shorter storystrat 1.0

as soon as the factions freed them selves with those points,  strat would turn normal.  almost ^^

but story strat is a nice idea as well, specially to test it

If it would get considered, which i doubt, there surely should be a test version. :)

I would want to win Strat, just to troll hard as a puppetmaster. The trolling possibilities are endless!

I much prefer the open ended sandbox approach as to adding a linear storyline to strategus.  What happens if the story isn't very good?  What if the story leads me in a direction I really don't want to go?  I have always hated it when a game tries to get me to do something I don't want to do.

Isn't the whole idea of strategus that it is player-driven? This idea just sounds like a bad game of Dungeons and Dragons where the dungeonmaster is bribing his players to follow MY STORY I ALREADY WROTE UP GUYS STOP FUCKING AROUND IN THE TAVERN!

Then again I would like to see devs place armies of "NPC" bandits and looters around the map and have them attack fleeing armies or camp choke points. No good dirty scoundrels that anyone can merc for. But anyone who was attacked by them in a moment of weakness would cry that they are being unfairly targetted and why didn't you attack that other guy i'm quitting strat etc.
