Title: Someone explain this.
Post by: Gash on September 29, 2012, 12:56:46 am
So every now and again things happen in Mount and blade that make me go O_o?  Actually, a lot of things do, but most of them I've accepted as game design whether intentional or flawed.

However, here's one to wrap your head around;

I wear a Great Helmet with 8 Iron Flesh and I get 1-shotted with an arrow to the head by Robert*.

I sneak up behind Kelly*, who doesn't wear a helmet, and overhead slash her on the unprotected noggin with a Highland Claymore (8 PS). She survives and takes one or two additional hits before dying. (this is the second or third time it happens)

I'm curious to learn about any math and/or game mechanics which I don't quite comprehend yet. I realize both of these folks builds are probably optimized for the best performance, but yet I have a hard time understanding that one. lol

Discuss.

*Names intentionally changed to avoid flaming about the people involved. =P

I guess you didnt hit the head then....

Also damage has a random modificator too.

Well, it's harder to shoot someone in the head than to smack someone in the head, so naturally the bonus for melee head hits is going to be smaller.

Just imagine San running around having the same head bonus damage that archers get. Now that's some scaaaary business.

this is most frustrating thing for me aswell, no proper physics (formulas, not engine) for hitting.

The other day Butan survived 2 headshots from fully loomed longbow and bodkins from medium range with an open sallet. I sure was like WTF !

I've never had someone survive a headshot from my MW highland with 7 ps while wearing no head armor Cept for stabs. Often if its a side slash it may hit their shoulder looking like a head shot but really isn't but I don't know what to tell you cuz if I see a person without a helmet it's rare I don't one shot hen with my HB sword but always with y highland

Butan has Ghotic plate with bevor which gives additional head armour and it is probably +3 and helmet as well. He is str build as well. I expect him to survive a lot.

You most likely hit the guy's shoulder or back with your overhead.

There's no possible way you didn't 1 shot them with a HC and 8 PS, it WAS NOT a proper head strike if you didn't single shot them.

Also the ranged damage to the head balances out the sub par damage ranged weapons now do to the body. If you want to go back to the old table of ranged damage be my guest; where body shots were worth ridiculous amounts of damage.

If everything were as realistic as possible I'm pretty sure no one would play this mod. Being 2 or even single shot by arrows/bolts, bleeding out after surviving a slash or thrust from a weapon, cavalry losing their lances the second they couch something, being thrown from your horse the second you ride into something, thrust damage to a horse 1 Shotting the horse or 1 well placed slash taking it down....
...I'm sure you get where I'm going with this

I am always impressed when someone takes a morning star to the face when not wearing a helmet and survives.  Happens quite often though...

Simple.

Game is broken.

Ranged deal massive damage to the body. Ranged has low rate of fire, (most likely) bad melee capabilities and below average accuracy. All their shots hurt like hell (loomed, almost everyone has it anyway)

You have to understand the devs don't like people dying it hurts them inside.

chadz has been trying to teach us that violence isn't the answer he gave us rubber weapons so that hopefully battles would no longer be fought replaced with political diplomacy. Yet we persisted to fight so then he gave us weapons made of feathers to reduce the chance of us cutting ourselves, soon we will have to use our imaginations to fight...

Soon the kick will be the only way to deal damage in melee. At this stage native warband is looking like a very good game in comparison.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with a PK.

What has the world come to?

Ranged still gets a higher damage increase from headshots, right? You also have to factor in that most archers use bodkins, and all crossbows do pierce damage. My cleaver (36c) can hit people with godly plate armor 2-3 times in the head with no kill. It's harder to aim them, but spear and dagger thrusts to the head (you gotta jump and stab with the dagger!) usually take people out in one hit.

If your massive 2h sword didn't 1 hit someone an overhead, you probably just missed their head and hit the shoulders. Happens to ranged too. Nothing like seeing someone walk off an arrow to the jugular vein.
