Title: So... I guess I'm one of them now
Post by: Bjord on September 20, 2012, 08:14:32 pm
As soon as I retire, I'm gonna join the arbalest lamers. Maybe only for a gen, but if I like it, I'll stick with it. Otherwise I'm going dedicated cav. Either bumpslasher or lancer.

Why, you might ask? Because I'm a bit fed up with getting headshotted, bumped, couched etc, so I figured I'm gonna fuel the circle of hate. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with balance, but I never actually played any of those classes with looms, and I'd like to try them. :)

I've been melee for 10 gens and two years, so I feel like if it makes me rage so much, I should maybe play something more casual but equally rewarding. Cavalry is arguably the easiest class, so I might actually go with that first. Now that I think of it, I don't have the patience for arbalest reload time.

Anyone else considering a 180 degree turn?

Sure become a x-bower.

Nothing is easier to hunt for me .

Deleted BlackMilk 2 months ago, transfered all my looms+gold on El_Banduri, leveled my xbower up and am now about to hit level 30 with my dedicated Arbalester. Had a MW Military Cleaver for the first 28 levels, but decided to go with the Mace cause I can use it properly even unloomed at 5 ps.
It's been alot of fun so far...alot more than 2h tbh. Because 5 ps+8athl+50wpf is still somewhat viable in melee and sniping with the arbalest is a great thing. You really need to have a MW Arbalest+MW Steel Bolts though. If you don't have them you're really going to have a hard time.

You could go Long Espada or keep the Cleaver and then get a Round Steel Buckler + 1 Steel Bolts bag and ofc + 1 Arbalest.

So in total your gear would look like this.

Arbalest
Steel Bolts
Cleaver/Long Espada/Other good 1h weapon
Round Steel Buckler

Surprisingly with 5 or so shield skill you can actually block a couple of arrows if lucky as well as good in melee. And it takes 0 slots and weighs little so no worries there.

And Arbalest isn't that slow with reload time. If so you could get a MW Crossbow then and 2 stacks of steel bolts and your cleaver and make him an agi whore and kite the shit out of enemies or run around em and spam with cleaver.

I'm leaning between 15/24 MW arbalest + MW steel bolts and 18/18 MW Lance, +2 Shield and +3 Destrier.

Lance is IMO the best cav lance, it has 3 more pierce and is faster than heavy lance, and a good cav player is explosive and has good timing, Lance offers that viability. And besides, dueling cav is not my thing. I'll dehorse them if I can or if I feel brave, I'll try to pierce their face or something. Anyway, PROBABLY going cav.

Also want to try one gen of HX. Most fun I had in my life was with HX.

So I guess you're one of us who like to try everything (more than just couple hours with STF) now :D

So you're telling me, you've been trying cavalry for 4-5 months?

I'd say go for 18/21 full polearm cav. That lets you take any horse and 7 riding provides a good maneuver boost for the destrier. This also makes you faster, lighter and stronger on foot, and doesn't hurt your horse forcefield ability (blocking on horse is awkward though, due to the camera angle)

But remember cav can be very frustrating at times. Some rounds you will play ten seconds then die. Even if you have a shield and play carefully this is bound to happen (not frequently, but still).

Also I would reeeeally like to know who's the owner of the +3 military hammer. I want to buy one, and I can pay a lot for that stuff.

Well I have many characters that are not stf's . I decided not to retire my main anymore so I made it a hybrid to not get bored. But yeh isn't it all just "trying" when you begin learning all the tricks that are involved in mastering some class? I still think that melee is where this game has it's best bits but there is also more fun to have with it. Currently after lvl 33 on my main I've played more with archer alt (also not stf and lvl 30).

Arbalesting is fun. Went for arbalester for 1 of my entire gen, between all that meleefighting. Trust me, the annoyingly long reload times arent very annoying when you oneshotting people or wound them real bad that even a slightest touch kills em.

It's Oberyn's, he "quit"(aka back in a few weeks/months). But if he quits permanently I'm still keeping it, I've grown quite fond of it. And then if he comes back, it's his if he wants it back.

You just triggered my killer instinct, I'm gonna go cav so I can couch kittens like your avatar.

I'm a murderous son of a bitch!

Yeah go lancer cav, I used 18/21 on my alt with normal Lance (everything unloomed), had the easiest time getting kills. Lance is awesome for lancing infantry, not THAT great for cav vs cav, but you should avoid cav duels because it makes you useless anyway, just lance infantry/archers who are currently in a fight.

Alternatively, a 15/24 arbalest build has a much greater trolling potential, of course with an ironstaff. 24 agi + knockdown makes you quite an horrible opponent in melee is used correctly, which I'm quite sure you are capable of. The mace is way too mainstream and the added length of the staff is awesome. It will mess up you aim a bit though.

Terrible destrier build.  18/18 for destrier?  No, no no.  Go 21/15.  The 1 more riding skill isn't worth it.

If you want 1h/shield and polearms, go 21/15, if you want only polearms, go 24/15 (at level 30).

You can thank me now.

Also, I never understood why the "default" crosswbow/2h build is 15/24, why wouldn't it be 24/15?

I guess you mean the quarter staff. Iron staff is 2 slots.

I guess, but if I get dehorsed I can only call for other destriers, I like to be able to pick at least coursers etc.

Oh well, I should focus on keeping my horse alive better I guess.

21/15 is nice I suppose, I like to have a shield for when I went to bump the shit out of ranged, especially when I'm using warhorse, those bitches trick ranged into shooting at your shield instead of your horse because they're desperately trying to claw at death's own paws. Well, son, it's pointless. I told you I'm a murderous son'bitch. <3 armoured horses. 7 ps with a +3 Lance must sting like a bitch.

I had a lot of fun as crossbow with a small investment in 1H weapons. The heavy crossbow reloads a LOT faster than the arbalest, and you can still 1 shot most people if you have it and steel bolts at +3. You can also go with 3 less strength in your build, and that means more athletics to annoy people with no ranged weapons.

I've been expirementing with great lance and generic knight gear and turns out 'tis loads of fun.

Also a lot more challenging, since you can't just casually poke around with the thing, so you will have to actually time your couches very carefully.
Duelling cavalry is amusing as well, but you don't really stand a chance if they get behind you and start hunting you with their pokey-pokeys.
In that situation you can of course always pull out your sidearm and try to have a bash at them with your choice of 1h.

Because of the wpf. If you go arbalest you want as many points in xbow as possible because you are using 3 slots for it and only a backup weapon, if you go normal xbow +2h you probably want wpf in both categories, a 18/21 build would probably work too here.

Speaking with few years of experience, I can warmly recommend 21/18 1h/crossbow build.
