Title: New promotion video contest

Maybe you already noticed our new landing page (http://c-rpg.net/index.php?page=tavernwelcomeintro) which features quite an old video (almost 2 years old!). Therefore we will run a little contest in the hope one of you guys can come up with something up-to-date. We will let the community vote on the best entry (though we will have the final say), reward will be in the form of heirloom point(s) (the more epic the more points!).

Not sure about the deadline yet since i've no idea how much time that takes or how many are actually interested and capable to come up with something decent.

We might be also interested in a small series of short videos explaining the basics for new players to get started. But that depends if some of you guys would be interested in doing that.

I prefer the let the bodies hit the floor dubstep remix. To maximize the effectivness of this, I would advise bold windows movie maker generic font and bright colors flashing phrases such as "OWNED" "360 NO SCOPE HS" or other simular phrases.

Someone recommend me an editor that isn't windows movie maker, and I'll see what I can do. Pretty new to making vids, but I got some decent (raw) footage of cRPG. Was thinking of making a tutorial/how does it work, series.

That's totally up to you. IMO the current video does a good job explaining what cRPG is about (you start as peasant and can become whatever class you want), but would make sense to include some of the better new features and changes we added during those 2 years.

Didn't like it, sorry.

Too many random effects, horrible font, weird transitions and overall poorly made.

Not sayin I could do better, but I have an eye for detail and quality. I didn't mean any offense, I just don't think this should be representing cRPG.

Why isn't Thomek here, btw? He was working on some by now forgotten cinematic short with in-game footage etc. Even cmp helped him out with a few scripts.

Oh yeah BTW, Zapper:

You said you had some raw footage? I have every imaginable tool at my disposal in school, if you wanted to we could try a collab. You provide all the recordings and I do the editing, split the looms 50/50 in case we win. :D

Worth trying, and competition is always good.

A suggestion:

IMO one or more people should cooperate to create a promotional C-RPG video.

1 person whom will create a CG intro that'll lead in to the edited in-game footage.

Should to be proficient in (or similar):

Photoshop
After Effects
(Final Cut Pro)

(can be done in other video editors of course)

Another person to record and edit the actual scenes together - and preferably also have a good enough rig to record in HD so we would maintain the highest quality of production.

Plan:
Potential scenes to record:
(have players wear recognizable clothing, e.g. Knights vs Nordic)
Piece together the footage after a couple of epic events and voilà.

Could also always go nuts with some crazy idea, such as creating a monologue someone could voice over :wink:


I would happily sponsor C-RPG gold to those that'd take up the task, it certainly seems we have plenty of people with the qualities roaming the forum. C-RPG deserves a great promo video.

I'll give this one a think :rolleyes:, I like the idea of having short videos to help anyone new to the mod. It's important for a video of this type to look professional, intriguing and have good content that represents the community well and what cRPG is all about. My fellow clan mate Noctivagant has a talent for this kind media stuff, I would definately support that guy for making this happen ;).

You can get rid of the HUD by just joining as observer. You can also get quite smooth camera moves in this mode.

I made this one in Premiere but i have quite weak comp ATM so i can really patricipate cos my videos will be in rather weak quality (you can see on this one that even the jousting was laggy :) ).

I think that idea for this one is great. If the video will be good enought we could really bring new people here, and we could definitelly use new people.

I also think that old trailer is good it have most views from all Warband videos (except mayby official trailers and official stuff). So it seems like nice base to start with.

When I check most of the videos I have to say typography is tingling my OCD senses. Courier new, Comic Sans, Arial, Times New Roman...forget about these. Stop being lazy and check sites like www.dafont.com (http://www.dafont.com) stay away from fantasy fonts as well as unreadable initials.
Same goes for audio, as Cooties mentioned above there are more possibilities than just cliché requiem for a dream etc. Check stuff like X-Ray Dog, Audiomachine, Two Steps From Hell, Cavendish Music, Epic Score etc. If you can't find something make your own. There are several composers in this community. FYI Medieval folk has no copyrights since any sound recording first made in the USA (EU has different but more flexible rules) prior to 1972 is not covered by federal copyright law. For example Stronghold only uses medieval like simple tunes and it catches the feeling. Not everything has to be like 300, we are not making a MMORPG trailer here. Mix tunes, there are time limits in copyright law. When I'm dividing my skill points I don't get that epic and ragey.

There are some intro examples such as :


and these are very quick just weekend works. There are other people who were creative enough to make interface mods, backgrounds etc. long before it was ever suggested officially. Find them, ask them what they can do. Ask map makers to suggest the environment.

A storyboard is required, it doesn't work with "-maybe a castle shot, maybe a battle shot, maybe a romantic scene" anyone with a good imagination can come up with a good storyboard.

Anyone can be a director of their shot too. Ask people, ask clans and I'm sure you'll find people willing to help. Forget about the word "Maybe", it means you don't know what you are doing.

Long story short, don't try to make a movie from random material "oh maybe I can squeeze these 10 seconds of nonsense in between" don't exceed 2.5 minutes approx.
People willing to do anything : write down which software you use and on what level, be honest about it. Instagram like Photoshop effects don't make you a CG guru.
Don't turn the whole thing into your clan's or your personal boasting.
Don't write random crap on it like "courage, power, rape"
Set yourself a time limit, be brief about things, Make titles like : Public Battle, DTV, Strategus, Character Development, Community etc. give a certain time to each title
Most importantly don't be lazy and be creative.

Even though much could be improved it's still one of the best promotion videos for crpg up to date.

I agree with Bjord.

- Make intro shorter and decrease the number of different effects (make it more consistent).
- Make transitions faster.
- Decrease font size.
- Replace the music (The Game of thrones theme is a good example of something I would like to hear)
- Also, video quality needs to be higher but I guess that was intentional just to show it quickly.

What should be done is to show the diversity in crpg (classes & equipment) by showing in game battles with different themes and different music to it.

Bjord is right, you can't post a suggestion for a promotional video without expecting to receive plenty of criticism from different angles.

Criticism such as that isn't personally though, I'm sure everyone appreciate the time and effort you spent. People just rarely express appreciation.

Give it another shot, perhaps start by focusing more on the CG intro instead of in-game footage.

It wasn't a personal attack, I was simply critiquing your work.

And personally, I never submit something unless I am 100% satisfied with the work. As I said, I have a trained eye for this sort of work as I attend a school focusing on media, that includes all types of editing, photographs and videos alike - and overall things that appeal to ones aesthetic sense. In a trailer, you need dramaturgy and good transitions, even the choice of music needs to be carefully picked.

And if I were to encourage or suggest a guide line, it would be this:

It has to feel epic. You need to keep in mind that the promotional video needs to appeal to as many people as possible for the mod to attract more people. If you are unable to inaugurate such considerations into your work then I strongly suggest you give this a pass.

There are some guys in this community whom have some talent for this, and even make a living from. One particular person I have in mind is Noctivagant. Looking forward to his contribution.

I will also try to contribute, you're welcome to return the favour and critique on my(and Zapper's) work.

Alright.. if the deadline is 1.5 months+ i could try to submit something.. You see I'm a busy AND lazy person :)

Anyway, as I happen to make (short) films in RL for too many years.. :)

I guess the video in question has to be a kind of infotainment presentation, but it would be good if it had story elements.

Kudos for Noctivagants advice btw. :)  (Except there is nothing wrong with curier! lol)

1. Be prepared, a video like this is a LOT of work.
2. Plan it fucking well! Make storyboard, try to play back the video in your head, in DETAIL. Then stay true to your vision!
3. Beware of the limitations of cRPG camera:

* Freemode camera makes it hard to do smooth pans. Only 2 speeds, second one is very fast. Only 1 wide "lens"
* 1st person view have limited speeds but also "long lens" if you zoom.
* Another trick to make slow cameramoves is to ride on a horse backwards.
* You will need a good mouse to do good cameramoves

4. Experiment with different texture packs before you shoot!
5. Don't be afraid to ask about advice. Technical and artistic.. If you have crappy fonts/text or need color grading or other effects, there are people here that are willing to help.

6. Plan it well! cmpx created a script now perhaps buried in time to control the weather and time of day for my film.. You can ask him about this. Plan ahead what armors people are going to wear, find reliable actors. (I had 40+ people on TS for the battlescenes in my film..)

Bit about planning..
Ok you have your vision, now make a storyboard. Check if its possible to film with crpg camera. If not, revise it until it does.
For every frame figure out what you need. Locations, time of day, weather, characters, armors etc etc. Write down Lists.
Contact the people you need in advance. :) and PLAN.

Good luck! :)

(7. Oh and DO TESTS if you are trying something difficult. How to handle material, how to convert, software color correction, sound, etc etc..)

why not make an event like the Clan tourny and film 200 men action
if some big Clans participate u have ur Actors and could incinate some epic screens
200 men server should be promotion nuff alone^^

also an crpg vid should defo show the Evolution of an Peasent that got killed 6 millards ways and a Pro who just owns

edit: might not belonging here but there could be also Tutorials be done ,for Newcomers which explain the Mechanics of M&B(cRPG:) and also the Role and Gameplay of the Classes in Siege,Battelmode and StrategusAction as Adition for the Guide section.

But srsly, I think a 200 men battle might be impressive... as long as it doesn´t transmit the message that one team absolutely rapes the other one (f.ex. GK in full strenght :P ) -> Unbalanced mod

Very nice. I love how in the "Become a mighty warrior" -phase the progression is from a peasant with a one hander to a two handed hero.

What's that music? Very war-like.

Typo wise, I think I spotted a "hundrets of weapons" in there, but it's a little difficult to tell with the font. At 1:35 or so.

Wow rly nice. Ive done a few videos, and i know how much time u have to put into it. U guys are awesome for using ur time to put videos like this together for c-rpg.(and some looms)

And its prob just me thinking this, but most people use the duel server to become better. So between the transition from peasant to a mighty fighter, u could maybe but that inbetween? Anyway nice videos.

Im trying to give ideas, and why would he record me?. He is ofc gonna record himself, like they do in all the videos. I just rly like the dueling aspect of the game, and would like to see that in videos. Is that so wrong?

I imagine something like them doing better and better in dueling, and then finally beating the others. And could u plz keep the hate in the dueling thread? No need to spam this thread with useless bullshit.

Excellent, good tempo, lots of action, good information.

If I would have some critique it would be to let some of the text last a little bit longer, as it's really hard to read so fast. :)

Basically the whole thing is almost perfect! Finish it up by working more on sound design and try to grade it a little bit for more contrast etc.. (Not too much though!)

Doppel thats really nice - could use a bit of editing in some places to just tighten up some things...

Yeah Doppel, I was thinking the same thing.  If the community/devs or whoever decides this is leaning towards yours (after revisions I assume) just contact me if you like and I can work on some graphics.  Nothing crazy but enough to give it that more professional feeling on that end of things.

I'd remove the credits at the beginning. It's a promo video for cRPG, not Warband -- Paradox and TW have nothing to do with the mod.

You might also want to throw in a section about Strategus. Material for that should be available starting tomorrow. Nice vid! :)

Best yet, although the begginging scene zoomed out above the combat where you cant really see anythign prolly not necesary. The fact that its at the begining of the video is also a problem, its not to exciting and people may stop watching when that is the first thing they see they may not think the rest of the video will be any better, you gota grab their attention with whatever you put in at the start. Id assume the video targets people who already play warband, and that is something they already know about its no different in crpg so i doubt it would excite them.

There's no deadline yet. I'll keep this thread going for a few more days to get more suggestions, first entries, etc. before deciding on it (i'm thinking of some time around mid october). If you want to participate the best would be to post here so we know that you exist. I like the idea of working together - if you can't or don't want to work alone on an entry post what you can contribute so you can team up with others.

I agree. First scene mus be much more epic. This one feel nice with music but it's pretty boring i think. I personally think that recording huge battle from observer perspective can result in pretty epic scenes. Also after this guy turn himself in to knight there is a scene where guy bump horse in to fence not really nesesarry. Mayby do a scene with this guy fighting or sth to make it more logical. Overall video is fine mb add some info about Online campaing

haha i make a realistic video where u get first spammed by a HA as u desperately try to kill him chasing his rouncey wtih a courser, the ur horse cripples and behind comes a group of lancers, then a 'ninja' jumps out a bush and tries to spam you to death but you manage to kill him with one backstep and a quick counterattack. It all ends when a light kuyak wearing danish spammer comes and stabs you to death as arrows pew past you.

Why would a danish spammer stab you? Stabbing is for german hero's, not danish.

There needs to be a longer montage of all the hate LLJK got back in those days. Hell, the hate from when ATS server was no longer the main NA server could fill a video alone.

I never minded anyone from LLJK, but in my mind, they (the old school LLJK players) had a stigma of being very very bad, and talked a lot of shit (trying to irritate people).  There were a few good/decent LLJK players though that I recognized when playing, but they still had a stigma of being really terrible.

For graphics only "Realistic colors" and "Blood enhancement mod". Textures are all maxed out though.
For sounds there's "More metal sounds".

Noob. Get a cheap NAS with Raid 1 and store stuff on there. Or buy a second HD and make a Raid 1 in your computer, if you are poor.

So this video contest died down a bit because last year there was really only one good/serious entry imho (from Doppel) - and now we got a second one (from korppis). To finally come to an end i will leave this thread open until the end of this week (2013-03-31) and then put up a vote. If you want to participate either post your video or tell us that you are working on one and when it will be finished (should be in a timely manner).

BTW: since Doppel lost his source files is there some way to tweak a few things (like replacing the logo) by downloading and editing the youtube video?

I put his name in the credits and if he does not want the logo in a can re-upload the video without it (I did not want to wait longer as the contest was allready supposed to end a few days ago).

I've downloaded my video to improve the old version.

I've added the new logo and changed some minor things like the font colour. I don't know what i've done wrong, but the picture is a bit messed up (bars on the right and the left). If I find a solution I will upload a better version of the 3rd trailer.

Ok so I am pretty much done now, allthough I have not received a reply from Juhanius about using his logo in the video. I put his name in the credits and if he does not want the logo in a can re-upload the video without it (I did not want to wait longer as the contest was allready supposed to end a few days ago).

Really professionally done, great overlays and use of text in game. Could still use a bit more cav action  :wink:

What would be epic is at the end, when you write "become a feared warrior" if you would feature one of our current crpg MVP's. Ideally a really scary looking one.

Love the music and how it matches up with the action - truly goose bump feeling there. Your screen cap is a bit blurry in full screen, maybe the resolution in general could be increased?

It looks like somewhere along the line that aspect ratio has been changed and the video has been stretched, did it look like that in the original download?  if not then maybe it was you render settings. trailer 1 & 2 are both 16:9 but trailer 3 is not.

if you are using vegas then you can check both of these things to see if it was the problem

i prefer 722 video but you can use Doppel moment with changing gear for most epic crpg video so far

Yes i agree, i also dont like the "become a feared warrior" at the end, but everything i come up with is really cheesy haha
