Title: I must break you [Boxing discussion thread].
Post by: Son Of Odin on September 06, 2012, 04:03:15 pm
Almost 50 years old Dolph Lundgren having a boxing match :D.

Does anyone here do boxing? It might be a great hobby. I'd like to try it and get into better shape + what could possibly be better than beating people when you are feeling annoyed, bored or angry at something?

So please share your possible boxing experiences. I'm all ears.

Try it out, awesome training for sure. You'll get in decent shape very fast, since the training is fucked up hard. Best thing is that the training is well-rounded, you get strength, endurance,  explosivity, mobility, reflexes and speed.

I think I'll take the beginner/fitness boxing class first. Then maybe move to the "competetive" training where they punch people more and less punching bag :D. Oulu seems to have a nice boxing club. Currently having the Finnish champion in their ranks

Of course you start with beginner/fitness, but it will still be hell of a hard training ;) 2 hours of pain, sweat and adrenaline, you'll even puke if you push yourself "to" hard.

As a karate black belt I challenge you to a duel once you have pumped yourself up, Son of Odin-san

Boxing is cool. Started to like it after watching the anime Hajime no Ippo, lol, boxing anime. Allthough the anime exxagerates a lot it is still fun to watch. Was so close to begin boxing after watching it, but im too lazy afterall.

Btw, almost 50 years and still goes into the ring? Geez, thats.. awesome, but crazy. The other guy only won because of home-court advantage or w/e it's called ;)

Yeah I think they were quite damn equal. I didn't count their hits but I think the other dude was not any better than Lundgren. Maybe better at dodging hits but he didn't counter those situations too effectively because obviously Drago has amazing reach and was able to cover any hits after he was dodged.

would beat him

I bet that 50 y/o guy is SoO and he is fishing for epeen.

On a serious note, boxing is awesome it's just that i'm too frail and lazy to start training in the gym and all that shit that goes with it, i have friends who box - kickboxing, though, and they really enjoy it as far as I know. Allthough you gotta remind that a large part of boxing is condition training, I mean a lárge part, ot's not like "hi guise, dolan here, gme gluves i kik ur as goobis."

Hahaha loled at that part :D. Yes I'm aware that you are not actually punching people most of the time.

Recently started, I got the right build and arm range for a career my trainer said lol. I'll do amateur boxing at max, not interested in losing all my brain cells.

It's very tough, but I've done martial arts in the past(3 years in total) and it gave me some nice foundation. Did Kenpo, which is a Chinese version of kick boxing.

Try it, Odin, great stress reliever. I'm thinking about investing in a big boxing bag to hang in our garage.

I would certainly like to have a boxing bag in my garage, just for the heck of punching something when i start raging.

Anyways, im sure any club/school whatever they call a boxing group will let you train with them to check wether you like it or not, without asking for money, here you can just come in for the first few lessons and see if you like it, before making a decision.   :)

Hmm there actually is a huge punching bag downstairs of this building. It's in somekind of shared space for chilling out with other students (yeah right, I've never actually seen anyone in there except for Everkistus when we tried to study :D).

I've noticed that I need hard physical exercises to keep myself going. It has a direct effect on my mind and how I feel about everything (yeah the same old boring babble but its true). I had the same historical fencing class as Everkistus but I got fed up with it after some time. Reason is that I never want to pay couple hundred euros for my own sword and other accessories the others were eager to buy and blend in. Everkistus' sword is cool and all but still... Boxing gloves don't cost that much and you can actually put some force into your moves without having to fear that you'll slice your friend in half :DDD.

Yeah i get your point, ive seen Everkistus' sword, véry nice, and I also noticed the price was, well, high. But i think if you really want fancy boxing gloves, high end shit made by 8 y/o kids n third world countries like all the other shit that's expensive, you'll pay a high price but nowhere near as something like Everkistus' sword.

Though gloves do wear out. :) and the worst that could happen is knocking someones teeth out

Well do you think that the sword is forever? It gets pretty nasty looking after a while when you bang it against other swords, so I think it will wear out too eventually. Knocking someone's teeth out/breaking nose vs. possibly seriously injuring someone with sword (yes it's blunt but you can't put real strength behind the hits).

Yeah it's blunt, but there's still the change of poking people. Last weekend we had a seminar where we had a bit of a tournament (didn't participate due to long break from fencing) where one guy caught a thrust to the inside of his elbow. Even though he had protective fencing shirt it was still enough to leave a wound. Nothing that a couple bandages couldn't fix though :D

BTW swords are damn durable. Mine is pretty scratched already and has quite a few dents, but it's nowhere near worn out. I'll probably use it forever for basic Fiore training. However, I'm thinking of buying a bigger twohander for Vadis style. And perhaps and 1h sword and a buckler for 133-training.

Yeah what did I say? Couple pairs of boxing gloves don't cost that much compared to fencing gear :DD

dude,  do it!  I myself am a competitive beer drinker,  and trust me,  nothing blasts you away better than a hard hitting training session with the guys!

also on a serious note:  do it.  sword fighting is a lot of techinque and finesse,  boxing is a LOT heavier on the strength/conditioning part.  which is a bit lame from time to time,  but just maybe you will find a few cool guys to workout with,  which makes everything easier.

also next time you go hunting you can punch the dead moose into the face with a lot more effectiveness.

A German competitive beer drinker, can it get more stereotypical than that?
