Title: Motivating people to make mod a better thing
Post by: DaveUKR on September 01, 2012, 12:34:08 pm
We are all playing this lovely mod and I was wondering if there is something we can motivate players to help devs to do something. There are millions of things to be done, but they're not in the first lines of to-do lists of devs or they don't have people for something of that. So what I suggest: We create a faction and donate gold to its bank. After that we pick some things which need to be done (like making sounds for voices, making LODs for armours/weapons to increase game performance, making new collision meshes, new models of weapons/armours etc.) and we decide how much gold it's worth of.
I want to make it open and clear so not a single gold will go to someone's hands without earning it. I would also like all gold there to be given by players exclusively and not by devs. The log of the faction will show who put money and when money were taken out. I'll also add that I'll proceed with my work on the mod without any gold taken from this faction, because I simply don't need it. There are a lot of talented guys among us and with some gold rewards it will be much more motivating for them to do something.

The faction is just called "cRPG" and I would be happy to see all players taking part in it. Lets make this mod a better thing to play... because we can :D

http://c-rpg.net/index.php?page=ladderoverviewclans#!?page=ladderinfoclandetail&id=1512

You can transfer gold to your alt and join the faction with your alt to donate. No need to leave the faction with your main!

Sorry, didn't understand OP first time.

Not a bad idea but I think that people who want to help devs are more likely to do it for free like they are doing it now than for imaginary gold.

I also want to give something back, in a form of a gamemode or model. Gold won't make this happen faster.

No way I'll support that.

if i ever get rid of my mighty great long axe for cash, i'd gladly donate some money!

and of course i want to offer my skills to help with the development too, but i'm really busy with my own stuff, that's why i never really put my hand up.
i could do texturing, and i'll even try to do some modelling when it's needed. i'm also thinking about completely new animations (not just for cRPG), but do NOT quote me on that, as it's a huge pile of work and really difficult. i want to make them seem less casual, and in such a way that they offer some more realistic choices to weapon usage, like, for example hooking and dragging an opponent to the ground with a polearm. i really want to see this emphasized in a game, be it cRPG or any other mod/game.

in general, i have my head full of ideas on how to improve all this 'mess' (sorry for that, it's ofc exaggerated).
if anything, i'm more into game design (designing things to work, concepts) than game development (creating beautiful textures/models/loading screens/...).

and i want to add just a note about motivation:
real intrinsic motivation comes from yourself, BUT appreciation needs to come from others. and that's why a pool of gold is helpful.
while that's my understanding, i also know that gold will corrupt, so it should be made clear that any reward is not a reward, but an appreciation!
an honest gift in the opposite direction, kind of. does anybody see my point?

thank you for reading.

maybe they didn't find their niche? New models for hunting crossbow and Arbalest would be more useful probably, since they don't have their own models.

Oh really? Transfer your gold to your other alt and join with it.

And don't forget that you'll have to keep 10,100 gold remainder on your STF alt.

No, I don't since I have full MW set on me. I don't need any gold or any masterworks as I've told.
Contribute if you can and we will make this mod better together ;)

Well, it's nice idea, but it won't work until devs share to-do list or do something else to let people know what stuff is needed and what is not. Maybe creating topic where people will write what they can do for mod and devs will reply if it's needed or not, would be nice idea.

It will be in future. Currently it's a known fact that devs need:

- Some sounds and voices being recorded.
- LODs for a lot of current equipment = low detailed models for existing armours/weapons which replace high detailed at some range so you don't see the difference but performance increases drastically when there are a lot of players
- New models/animations for armour/weapons and some objects = obvious
- New collision meshes since the old are unoptimized shit.
- New textures for some certain objects = obvious

I'll give 500k gold to a person who make two pair of gloves, one white/black/red/blue/green padded gloves and another silk lady gloves (pearl white/royal black/crimson/tyrian/emerald). They have to look good though.

Just FYI, ill be finishing the voice pack in the next few weeks (the quick menu) and will be happy to do any other sounds that need doing.

I did actually do them in the first place, but apparently the file was corrupted and then I took a year off Crpg to pay for rent and whatnot.

I need no payment for this.

seems like someone has not understood the purpose of the thread ... imo its not a  shop where you can order something .. its n appreciation-o-meter for players that help devs to get things done ... but maybe im wrong

Cosmetics.

Maybe challenges for voulonteer coders? Whoever codes something that increases variety(maybe one or more slots for more customization) with highest quality gets something from the pot.

And then we need new item types!

I'm thinking of 100k for each weapon/armour set of LODs because it's not really easy to make LODs with appropriate quality.

There are other things people can do. Host tournaments, do marketing for the game, write How-To guides for new players, etc. Any sort of community development is a good thing!

I think it's a cool idea, but even cooler would be real donations to a paypal account. Maybe we could get good artists to make new stuff for us, if we bring together a few dollars everyone. Maybe the devs could make it that when you donate for the servers, you can also specify a part of the amount that you would like to go into this development pot.
