I don't really need to elaborate on this - I'd venture a guess that everyone (at least NA1) knows about the ridiculous 45 degree or more mountainsides that are in near every map. It is no fun to climb these, especially in pursuit of an archer.
edit: Some scientific-sounding article: "[Researchers] found that small increases in slope angle above about 30 degrees translated into large increases in landslide erosion as the stress of gravity exceeded the strength of the bedrock." http://www.futurity.org/earth-environment/the-science-of-steep-mountain-slopes/

Because the engine doesn't support angle of repose calculations and it can't develop avalanches and what not. More over 45 degree angles do exist in nature, they tend to be rock faces more than sediments and soils.
edit: Don't science me boy, I'm a geo-nerd. You want to go all geo-science or this shit is going to get messy!
My bi-weekly blog readings... yes I am this lame.

I mean Georneys for christ sake... these people... worlds biggest dorks but they sure do know a lot about explody mountains and crashy continents.
In particular check out the land slide blog, Dave Petley always has some mad pics.

Check out this kick arse debris flow from Austria :D SO COOL!

FRANK SO SMART!

I'd love to see anyone walking and fighting nonchalently on a 45 degree slope. my old friendchers seem especially enamoured of them, and will agglutinate to it whenever it presents itself in maps, for very obvious reasons. And 45 degrees is generous considering some of those cliff faces.

I have no problem with the 45 degree angles and the my old friendchers on the hills, I just reverse my ugly arse horse straight up there defying anything remotely resembling reality.

Some maps avoid the problem of exceedingly steep hills all around so its clearly possible to develop a map with unobtrusive borders. I don't understand your point about the engines limitations concerning avalanches and angles unless you think I am suggesting cRPG should have avalanches.

If the only justification for cartoonish mountainsides is "sometimes rock faces are very steep" I don't really understand this feature.
Edit: And I know that is a rather stark abbreviation of your post but I am not trying to prove a point - I'm mostly just curious about why cRPG has these insane mountains.

Sure you are pointy! WE ALL KNOW IT!
That's the only reason anyone post in this forum, to show how right they about things. I am the supreme righter! THE RIGHTEST OF THE RIGHT! THE RIGHTIOUS CAPTAIN OF THE RIGHT! Funny how I'm latte lefty liberal wonk, but oh well... I'M RIGHT! HAHA!
I personally don't like those stupid hills either and don't add them to the map(s) I make (made) either I should stop being the laziest man in the world and upload my map.

You know what I hate about these hills with high degree angles? That you can walk FULL SPEED to sides. Just ridiculous, running like a goat on the 45 degree hill :D

That's not the actual reason, the real problem is that we have mappers that think 60 80 degree slopes are a good thing for map design, and server administrators that accept those maps.

Crappy custom maps are the reason why professionals are hired to make maps, not nerds with no experience or mind for game balance and flow.

Your point being ?
It's funny how I can hate some people nearly on sight when they say things like that. People investing in creative activity do a good thing to this mod, even if what they do is bad and/or not used in the end. They get feedback and can improve.

Central South America, China and many other places in the world have terrain very common to the ridiculous c-RPG Melee Gaming terrain, not that it makes it a good idea or for balanced/fun map making, but it is certainly realistic and plausible.

Hills and mountains aren't anything weird, but what really is is being able to walk up them when the slope is almost vertical. The solution would be making it impossible to climb them if they are too steep.

Given how limited the engine is for animations, I always assumed that just like the blocking system is really representing deflecting blows, the "walking up steep hills" is representing scrambling/climbing.
It certainly does look weird though.

There's nothing more fun than trying to melee on a steep hill, and having every other swing catch on the damn thing. Also, it's quite difficult to block when looking down a steep hill, because your character model obscures everything.

Someone should make a macchu pichu map.
