Title: NA Tournament
Post by: joshko on April 08, 2011, 12:12:14 am
NA Tourny here's how it goes down.

I'm deviating quite a bit from the polls but I think it'll work.

This will be a clan tourny that must field a team of at least 7 people. If opposing clans can field more, bigger matches are permitted so long as both teams are even. No pub substitutes.

I will not be following Beau's set up because I don't feel like doing the math involved. :D

Lucius has been making a map for the tourny and it's getting near completion so the matches will take place on it in the duel server set to battle.

There will be 3 round per match best 2 of 3 wins.

I need a list of all clans wishing to participate in order to go any further on this. I am planning for the tourny to last a week, in the week two clans find a common time to meet and find an NA admin to make sure no shenanigans take place. The admin will record the match and get me the numbers.

The admin may not be in any clan fighting that match.

Clans so far:
ATS
TS
Hospitaller
Black Rose
Bridge Burners

Clans have until Sunday the 24th to register.

I'm a tad confused. Will you be rigging the tourneys by yourself, or will there be others on the committee to help rig them?

Umm idk, maybe. I was volunteered to start the NA Tourny movement so I'm trying to get a feel for what both the community wants and what works.
I'll review it.

I'd be up for a clan tourney or a kind of team tourney.  I don't know what's expected but drawing some names out of hats would be good, with some names deliberately separated for balance.  E.g. Joshko, Devilize, Sylauris, Whalen, and PlatonicPie are randomly put on team ALPHA-[insert team's chosen name here] and they'll first fight team BETA-[other team] featuring Goretooth, Pandersonsonsonsonsonsonsonsonson, Noobie, Suuper, etc.

Perhaps players should first sign up and then the selection committee could bracket them as they see fit, with every team having players drawn from each bracket.  This may solve the HarmlessPeasant problem which'll inevitably come up.  Also, time-specific teamspeak/vent channels should also be provided if there's any sort of random team selection going on.

NOTE: If another pair of eyes is needed to watch over any matches or whatnot I can do that.  It's almost summer break and I should have a disgusting amount of spare time to spend for invigilating.

I say just keep it simple for now and run a clan tournament. That would be easy to rank etc. Teams would be cool too, but not as easy to rank as teams may eventually change their players creating a new team so to say. So if you just wanted a "one and done" sort of tournament then by all means let it just be teams of whoever.

I appreciate the PM, but this is the first day I haven't pulled a 15+ hour shift and got home still concious enough to check the forums.  Haven't been able to play in weeks.  I wish you much luck on your tourney though.   (Gonna go powernap before I head back for another shift now)

I voted Clan Tourney btw.  Clan vs Clan matches are the best thing in gaming.

My vote goes for team matches for sure.  Random/balanced, so that we can see clan-mates square off against each other, both knowing each others strengths and weaknesses.  Plus, it gives players like me who aren't part of a clan a chance to participate :)

Clan/team combat sounds fun.
what is the #s on each team; 12 v 12? 8 v 8? 4 v 4?
Larger clan battles shouldn't be apart of the tournament; but as separate individual clan battles in and of themselves.

I like the random team made by the players who enrolled. So you don't have the big players making a team just to win, but have to do with their teamates that they'll get (Having Goretooth being stuck with me for example :P)

Isn't this essentially just a standard battle match?   :P

Random teams generally suck in regards to always being able to blame wins and losses on crappy teams and random chance.  Every organized sport uses pre-selected teams afaik.  I can't think of any sport/competition where a bunch of dudes just get together and start drawing lotto numbers to see what their "team" is going to be.  Those are school-age playground games or at best pick-up games at the local park or something.

I'd support teams with pre-chosen members. This'd give smaller clans and clanless players a chance to participate.

4v4 Team battles sound like fun! I hope we can work on the Honor System, to keep alts out, and keep people from Team Jumping. :) I like the Random Teams idea myself, as long as we know well in advance who we are teamed with. Adds a bit of randomness to the mix, but with time to talk strategies and learn to work together. Where's the sign-up sheet?

Well, if we DO use the team tourney system, I found a good random team generator. http://chir.ag/projects/team-maker/

Here's a result I got using 40 players (just names off the top of my head and some "place holder" names, sorry, I'm tired )
(click to show/hide)

Please, explain to me how this isn't awesome? Imagine the battles!

I'm not really liking the random team idea to be honest. But we'll look into it once this ones done.
Title: Re: NA Tournament

What about five-seven person teams?  The larger clans will have to fragment and compromise while non-clan folks can still band together too.

IDEA:  Each team requires one alternate player who can jump in from spectator if anybody can't make it or suddenly needs to leave.  This may help mitigate some of the inevitable dropouts and missed wakeup calls.

I just skimmed over Beau's tourny set up. I will probably copy it(with his permission) Though remove some restrictions.

Nice, i really liked and hoped to see you NA guys do some good tourneys :)

And clan Tournament would prob be the best im my opinion. If you do teams it will prob get way too random, and people maybe wont show up. And then its all chaos and people might not have good contact because they maybe wont be in the same clan and so on.

We've got tons of clanless people though guys, it kinda sucks to exclude them. Harmless Peasant, Onimaho, Braeden, me, Zisa, Walt F4, etc, etc, etc. Clan battles are all well and good, but what about the rest of us?

It'd be pretty cool if we could have one or two multi-team match battles.  Say, five teams per side to try and fill out a hundred-man server.

Randomly generated teams is stupid. I want to play with who I want to play with.

I think an excellent idea is to allow sort of a merging of the team/clan idea: For those clanless, allow them to form teams. For those in clans, expect them to play with their clans.

Also, I suggest smaller size battles to force gigantic clans to trim down and field multiple teams. There are more smaller clans than there are bigger clans, so in this way everyone is accommodated.

Furthermore:

This tournament obviously will be going on for some time. If we play the tournaments on cRPG servers, you, in essence, have two choices:

1) Stay at level 30 to ensure you're not at a disadvantage, therefore being forced to not retire and advance your character.
2) Retire and advance your character but run the risk of being forced to play in a competitive tournament at a disadvantage due to not being level 30.

This doesn't seem to make much sense or be very fair if you guys want a tournament that's actually going to be somewhat competitive. I offer up the BkS_Central server to be used for this tournament -- Yes, it's Native, but Native is simply cRPG without being forced into one role. The only real difference is firing speed of range and being able to switch classes easily, and then everyone is free from having to stick at level 30 for the remainder of the tournament. A lot of people will say "whhaaaa nooo I don't play native," but I encourage you guys to remember that cRPG IS native, just with extra items and character customization. A tournament is for gameplay purposes, and seeing which clan is superior -- let's have the only variables to determine the results be skill and tactics, not whether or not certain people are rich, heirloomed, willing to hamstring advancement, have the correct number of ranged/inf/cav (preset limitations, unable to adjust on-the-fly) etc etc.

So where/how do we sign up?  Has a Tourney committee been set up yet?

I have yet to clear it with the committee  in charge of the forming comitees beuro. Everyone who wants to participate must fill out forms BCE-23 C-36A and L3-22  and submit it to the committee of inspectors for pre evaluation so that can forward it to the committee of acceptors.

Although 10 v 10 got the majority it will be 7 v 7 for the sake of smaller clans. Clan leaders I'd like your current members list please, even if you have fewer than 7 in your clan send it I may figure something out for you.

Cool, I like the idea of hybrid teams.  Does this mean, though, that clans can have multiple entries?  e.g. Hospitaller Team A, Hispitaller team B, etc.
