Title: Suggestion: Retro Game of the Week (Sunday Multiplayer Event)
Post by: chadz on August 04, 2012, 05:52:09 pm
I was just talking about an old gem of a game today, battlezone, and thought it was a shame that I could never play it in multiplayer because, well, the game is dead. So my proposal is this:

we create a new board called "Retro Game of the Week", and someone who will moderate this. It can be any kind of retro game as long as it has a MP mode. Every week there will be people posting suggestions, and the one with the most upvotes will be played. The one who suggested the game will then take preparations to allow a smooth gaming experience the next sunday (server etc)

Sunday: game is played, new list is suggested.
Monday: list is closed, people have time till sunday to play a bit around with it and get to know it in SP.
Sunday: game is played, ...

The important part is that people sign up for the game, and that signing up is mandatory. It would have to be some honour thing to really be there, otherwise this would die fast.

Anyone else that would like that one last chance to play those old games that have lost all their playerbase?

Age of Empires 1 or 2
Starcraft 1/BW (Disconnected from Battlenet, will need 3rd party program to play online)
star trek bridge commander
The Ship
Brainbread
Sven Co-Op
Natural Selection
Wolfenstein enemy territory
conquer and command generals

Nice idea. In thread with this I must recommend the Gameranger application for whenever you feel like revisiting MP classics, lots of old games still being played there.

Good idea, we used to play games with friends like that.

Nothing better than playing some old retro multiplayer games at LANs.

Here's a few retro MPs I've personally had fun reviving:
Counter-Strike 1.6
The old, the good. Source is an atrocity towards CS.

Battlefield 2142
Titan mode is great fun!

Jedi Knight II: JediOutcast
Light Saber melee battles, force powers, lasers. Great fun.

Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe
If anyone is up for some longer games

Baldur's Gate II has an excellent MP campaign, probably not well-suited for this event (6 players maximum) but warmly recommended for your next LAN :)

Some rounds of Myth II sound like fun. I think there's still a way to play it online.

Age of Empires 2, rather easy to get working too.

Anyhow, glad you suggested this chadz, it will probably be taken more seriously.

Q3 is also awesome, especially instagib (only railgun) on q3dm17

chadz, appoint a moderator or make a poll yourself with all the suggestions mentioned so far. Let the vote run till wednesday or something, cause upvoting doesnt really work if people mention multiple games. Then next week, poll the same list but take the played game out and so on.

Total Annihilation, Warcraft II or Red Alert.

I'd happily appoint a moderator and create a board for it, but no one volunteered so far :)

Red Alert 2?

As far as I know Red Alert 2 requires activating a tcp/ip protocol which disappeared in Windows 7. Probably same for Red Alert 1.

Red Alert 1 is so much better than 2. One of the best games ever.

Red Alert 1, think you can still play it through Gameranger.

AoE 1 is a must. I used to have JK: Outcast back in the day, but I bought Academy out of nostalgia for that series. Movie Battles is a good mod for that game.

Oh and I suppose noone likes any of the Freedom Force games... they are too awesome but it gets boring owning my littlest brother and my gf.

Delta Force 2 anyone?

DF2 is somewhat dull in multiplayer, especially with low population, isn't it? I used to play that a bit when i was a kid.

Hmm, Nox anyone?

What about Unreal Tournament? Worms (World Party, probably)?

Ahh... Nox. I still have the CD. Played that to death one summer. Better than Diablo 2 singleplay imo.

Wolfenstein enemy territory
In b4 Contra/Rhekimos comes along and kills everyone on the server.

Other than that, the idea is cool.

Ahhh Nox.......I still remember playin it when I was a kid. Some enemies required certain weapons to kill them. Like zombies needed to be slashed to death with a firesword otherwise they kept coming back up to eating your face. Great game!

Been playing this for the past three hours, I was just looking for some tycoon-ish game. I would really like to see how this goes down in multiplayer. Great game.
