Title: Equipment/Realism/Whatever (poll inside)
Post by: Gnjus on August 03, 2012, 10:41:21 pm: Just a quick survey: does anyone else thinks that Plate Armors and unrealistic weapons (3 meter pikes, flamberges, great mauls, etc) should be removed from this mod ? Maybe its time to make this small step towards realism as I'm sure it can only be good for balance as well. Not that Plate is unrealistic but I'm certain many will agree that it just doesn't fit with most of the weapons & other stuff + we all saw what happens when people start swarming battle/strat servers with that equipment.

Historically they most certainly weren't used as in cRPG.

But seriously: Great Mauls ? Flamberges ? 3 Meter Pikes that you can block with and abuse their animations ? 17th century plate armors ? You're having a laugh.

I've suggested how several times and it is indeed possible to fix it in terms of realism AND balance if only people stopped thinking of it as a 1v1/main weapon. Anyone saying that the pike is not unrealistic obviously knows nothing on the subject.

All those weapons/armors are realistic.

Less realistic are the 2h bar mace (there is only evidence of 1h versions existing in history as far as I can tell) and the War Cleaver which is MUCH larger and longer in game than the historical evidence suggests...but both of those are pretty minor.

Everything you suggested is pretty much 100% legit.

The two-handed flame-bladed sword is called flambard, flammard or by the German Flammenschwert (literally "flame sword"). These swords are very similar to two-handed sword or Zweihänder. The only difference being the blade. Like other zweihänder they were used during the 16th century by the Landsknechts, by well-trained and experienced swordsmen, called Doppelsöldner (double mercenary) because they received double pay.

The maul is a long-handled hammer with a heavy metal head, either of lead or iron. It is similar in appearance and function to a modern sledgehammer but is sometimes shown as having a spear-like spike on the fore-end of the haft.

The use of the maul as a weapon seems to date from the later 14th century....
A particular use of the maul was by archers in the 15th and 16th centuries. At the Battle of Agincourt, English longbowmen are recorded as using lead mauls...

Wiki is not the end-all source, but its a great first source for checking on things like this!

Note that this wasn't an actually suggestion but a quick survey (as noted in the first post) although i admit - I didn't make my case quite clear due to laziness, my fault.
Lets look at the situation once more (this is where I'd like some competent person to reply (for a change):

Can we at least agree on these facts:

1. Mount & Blade is clearly based on human history rather then Fantasy, no matter the names of factions/universe/whatever. Yes or No?

2. Mount & Blade is clearly focused on era before firearms, If I'm not mistaken oKin or someone was saying something about 9-13th century and they stated there's no chance whatsoever of any firearms to be added into this mod. Yes or No ?

3. cRPG devs thrive to realism as much as the situation allows so far, they strongly reject the inclusion of any stuff without them having a valid historical reference. Yes or No ?

4. With all these points in mind - wouldn't it be logical to exclude items from an era which is too "high" for the targeted period of this game ? Yes or No ?

The items i mentioned are just a few examples and everyone seems to be grasping on pikes, naturally what i meant was "either fix it remove it" (as its not historically inaccurate but only flawed in-game, this might be a case separated from this subject) and i didn't list everything that would fit into this category.

Anyways - I'm done with this subject as its obvious that none important will ever respond, only trolls & derailers (note that i have enough experience in that department to be able to recognize them on sight :P).
