Title: Ranged on new duel system
Post by: Volk. on August 02, 2012, 05:23:27 pm
Do something with ranged cuz it is annoying.
Yesterday I was dueling with Lacoste, he took his arbalest and I lost 30 points.
Today I was dueling with T_knht_zzoidberg he took his arbalest and I lost 50 points.
This is really annoying.

1) Drop 10 Arbalests near duel site.
2) Win.

The lowest tricks earn the best scores.

So would you mind re-explaining what you are talking about, maybe in a coherent way?

"he took his arbalest and I lost 30 points".  Where'd he take his arbalest?  To the beach?

Are you trying to say he killed you with his arbalest?  maybe you shouldn't duel a ranged player then...

"Oh, man! He's got a bow? I bet he will totally try to psych me out by beating me with that hammer!"

Lacoste had xbow as 2nd weapon, so maybe it was my fail that I offered duel with him, but T guy ran right to arbalest after starting duel

Yeah...once you DUEL someone, its a fight to the DEATH.  They can use an arb, a horse, or even a sword.  Some people use spears.  Sometimes poleaxes, or normal axes.  Sometimes they have a shield, and may use armor as well.

If you don't want to die, don't duel lol.

I thought changing the weapon during the duel isn't allowed (I didn't play on the duel server for a long time though, don't know if it changed). but the rule still makes sense to me to be honest.

I also recall in the past thinking there was some rule saying it wasn't allowed to start with a weapon raised in the beginning of a fight, and then switch to another midway through, or pick up weapons on the ground.

You should be able to use a weapon on your back at least.

Maybe if you're an archer.  Xbow is cheesy as hell.  Using a pocket arbalest for the single shot can be done with 0 wpf invested and no worry about repair cost, yet if you land the shot you'll cut the enemy down to at least half hp.

That certainly doesn't seem to fall in line with the spirit of dueling.

I would like to at least see some clarification regarding proper duel etiquette, since people will start to care about their duel rank and do some pretty lame stuff.

Don't fight them again, simple.

But something is good about this:

Now it is easy to judge, who is a honorable dueler and who is a stats-whore which needs a big epeen.

Well I think also pikemen who want to use a sidearm, or even someone that wants to whip out a shield-breaker when fighting a shielder, and also shielders that carry an extra shield (for some reason) should be able to take it out.

I am of the opinion that anything you can cram into the 4-slot equipment screen you should be able to use in a duel.  THrow smoke bomb, switch from throwing to melee weapon, etc etc.

I don't think it was ever a rule, but just dueling etiquette that you use what is in your hand, or cycle through what you plan to use. What T_knht_zzoidberg did is pretty dickish (pick up an arb on the ground). Guess it is time to bring a DGS and 3 arbs to every duel...

Exactly. Nothing needs to be done about this imo.
That way archers can still duel archers and cav duel cav or whatever.

Duel doesn't mean "melee fight between two footmen".

Would be fun to see a good archer topping the list of duelists :)

Isn't it the other way around?
Atleast my impression is that archers have a smaller epeen than 2H "heroes".

Seriously? No one here actually went and checked the rules?

Let me quote:
Quote
Duel mode specific rules
  • All types of duels are allowed (ranged, mounted, shield, heavy armor...) if both duelists agree
  • No following or face-hugging the other duelist before the duel countdown has ran out - either hold your starting position or back-pedal if you want some distance between you and your opponent
  • No running away or going into unreachable places
So basically picking shit up is not allowed, but you can use the stuff on your back/sides if the enemy can see them/know that they are there.

If I wanna duel with more than one weapon, I first hold one weapon up, then switch to the other and then press F. That makes it more clear that I use multiple weapons. Also, feel free to ban poll people who facehugs before the duel starts. It's in the rules.

hmm, i don't see where picking things up is prohibited...

I think it's the 'All types of duels are allowed (ranged, mounted, shield, heavy armor...) if both duelists agree'.

Aka if you pick up a ranged weapon in the middle of the melee it wouldn't count as the other agreeing? Or does that just mean agreeing to the duel.

You did understand me wrong, i made my point not clear enough.
I didnt want to offend archers, i did talk about people, who pick up crossbows in the middle of a fight or do some other dirty shit only to win the fight.
I have no problem with dueling archers :)

Picking up anything after the duel started is not allowed (unless they stop and fight and ask in chat, ofc), it's switching to things on your back that's a big.... unclear...

Although starting your duel with a ranged weapon and then switching to melee seems just fine, while starting in melee and then switching to ranged is a dick move.

Believe it or not, there are exact Dueling rules (which are arguably important now due to this mess of a ranking system):

That rule isn't very clear to be honest. However, there is an old thread in the admin section that specifically says that weapon changing is allowed. There aren't any rules regarding picking up weapons, mostly because it doesn't happen a lot and it would be pretty much impossible to enforce any such rule (and it would make certain duels, like throwing lance duels, impossible). Personally I've always intepreted the above rule as: anything goes, if you disagree with someone's playstyle just don't agree to duel with that person (don't press f).
