Title: Survey - Your basic game preferences
Post by: Joker86 on July 19, 2012, 02:23:41 pm
Hi!

I saw that in the past days several topics appeared which are all the result of one single question: do people prefer more the fight man vs. man, the very act of killing, basing on reflexes and muscle memory, or do they rather prefer fighting in a team, the different classes supporting each other and steamrolling the enemy over a flank with minimal losses because he made a fatal mistake?

I know we have pretty much any preference combination in this community. All I'd like to know out of sheer curiosity is, how the distribution is. This topic is not meant to discuss which is the "right" way to play a game, or how the developers (either from cRPG or TW) meant the game to be, it's just about what is fun for YOU and WHY.

Edit:

Poll added. Please inform me if you would like to have someoptions changed/added. Poll is made so users can change their vote.

Edit2: another way to ask the question would be: do you like killing people or rather winning battles? Because that's not the same. You can be happy with having lost the round as long as you killed a few people, while someone else can be happy having won the round although all he did was scaring away the cavalry of a flank with a pike, and even being shot in the end. Or are you somewhere in between that?

I like groups and 1 on 1s pretty equally, being a swashbuckler I love bringing along a pike and making people hate me  8-)

I like following tactics when they are clear and only one person is doing it but I cant stand it when 5 keyboard Churchills start saying different things and then moan when no one follows them.

^Luv tacs and always try to contribute to my team,
when i`m playin with my 30/9 Hoplite I`m usually with the main group and support everyone.
But when I`m with my Dagger only main I`m a lonely backstabber :D

Since i'm a cav most of the time but even when im dehorsed or on alts i prefer blobs vs blobs (with tactics or not) and dislike 1v1 (unless it's a cav ''duel'')

STAND CLOSER TOGETHER. KEEP YOUR FORMATION. DEFEND THE FLAG!

CHARGE!

To me cRPG is a game that masterfully combines the necessity for individual skill and teamwork. In my experience there is no team that can't be defeated, no amount of cavalry that can't be countered and no 2H hero that can't be killed - for victors are predictable, cavalry situational and blocking unilateral.

As frustrating as it is to lose to a lack of teamwork, winning due to it brings me more satisfaction than topping the scoreboard ever could.

BRING ON TEAMWORK! BRING ON X5!

I am above tactics.

I like tactics, though.

Tactics + fighting equally.
If anyone actually tries to lead the battle blob, I will always follow their orders even if I disagree with them - A bad plan is better than no plan every time.

I just wish more players would try and lead the mob sometimes.

Doesnt it depend on the class and on the mood  :o ? Just a few examples

Hoplite -being team animal helps to stay alive and score some kills (otherwise quick deth)

1h shield -rather team animal

piker - totally team focussed

cav - predator behavior killing stragglers and unaware players or
being the protector of the inf, depends on mood

Guess that 1h / 2h / ninja / archer /light inf or cav are easier to play as lonewolf

What is meant with tactics in general? is our own behavior  meant or the perfect harmony of inf/cav/archers?

Well, usually you preference determines your class. So if you hate teamplay you will have no fun with pikes. That way you can already assume that pikemen are more inclined to teamplay than for example horse archers.

With tactics is meant how much you are looking for the course of the battle, what's happening at the flanks or the rear, are you suggestion or following tactics and so on - or do you simply rush forward and try to kill shit?

I see, so tactics are anything more than

"just rush the weaklings and kill them!!"

Speaking of "commanders", some people are really role models and many players will give their (virtual) life for them, unfortunately most of the bossy players are kiddies or under-average players. Blending both on the battlefield confuse many players

Actually, most wannabe Napoleon's are old guys like Phazh.

I have lead on occasions as well but it only works for a few maps, because the players get tired of being switched around all the time and it's hard to co-ordinate lazy people.

Well, as sad as it is, but with the current level of cooperation on the servers everything which goes beyond "[W]-autowalker-lemming-Rambos" is tactics.

Don't forget that the game doesn't necessarily support the same tactics like in real life. While fighting shoulder to shoulder in RL is benefitial to protect each other, it doesn't work in cRPG. You would teamwound everyone around you, and you couldn't fight the enemy properly because you need footwork to move your body. Moral is also less important. It still matters, you often see it when a team gets literally steamrolled although they had the same preconditions, but in general people are less afraid to die and thus there is no routing. Cavalry attacks don't work the same way like in RL, because compared to RL horsemen are much more vulnerable.

This further reduces the amount of tactics which are viable ingame. I wrote already a few tactic guides in the newbie forum, and I think in the meanwhile those topics should be the last ones on the last forum page (they were some of the first to be written in this forum). And during all that time I learned only few things that I could add. Most stuff is really limited.

Concerning the matter of "leading" instead of only "commanding": I guess one factor I read somewhere about was, that your reflexes for online gaming are the best at the age of about 17. Then they will decrease a bit until middle/end of twenties, and then decrease faster. It definitely is not the only or the deciding factor, but as reflexes are important for such a skill based game like cRPG I guess it makes some sense. Especially if Bjord claims that the wannabe commanders are usually older, which could be an indicator that they try to gain success over their advantage (experience -> tactics) than disadvantage (worse reflexes).

It's only a theory though, and I can't confirm it as I never was a powergamer and thus can't speak from my own experience. And I am 26 already, so I'm on my way down already

Out of curiosity, do you read your posts before submitting them?

If so, how come you do not have a head ache?

I love it when a team finally bands together and moves in formation after losing a few rounds on open plains maps. Makes the "boring" map more fun.

STAND CLOSER TOGETHER. KEEP YOUR FORMATION. DEFEND THE FLAG!

Tactics are nice but I get more fun out of killing people in a 1v1 or being outnumbered, 1v3 for example. Far more fun for me than being part of a team since the stakes are higher and the results are mine alone.

Murdering people is the best especially if you know them so besting them 1v1 makes victory that much sweeter. But I love the tactics especially when it includes crushing other clans who claim that mine doesn't have any or incapable of doing so.

My favorite part of cRPG is weaving in and out of the front lines, killing or disengaging from an enemy I'm fighting to right swing the backs of enemies who overextend.

I also like anytime I kill an enemy 1v1 in battle with a spinning right swing or left swing.

That's actually wrong and often enough (=sometimes, when everybody listenend to a tactic) I saw those blobs running into their doom.

Let me propose a situation to you.

You are fighting a opponent who you know out classes you but you have a team mate near by.  Do you shift your opponent so the teammate can score the kill/ free hit or do you shift him so your team mate can't make a clear attack?

Now personally I will ALWAYS try and shift anyone I'm fighting so some one can get a free hit.  Even if I KNOW with out doubt I can take him.  Why take the risk of him getting lucky.   But the back and forth of a good fight is rewarding.   So I guess I love the fighting more but I love it when teammates can see an opening I make and take advantage of it.
